Just imagine how awesome it would be to tell our grandkids the stories of the Great Silver rush...one day when we grow old. We are the rebellion that is starting the rush. It is going to escalate so much and so quick after the third of May. We live in such an awesome time!

Set in the California Gold Rush - read it in the 90’s!

The things I remember about this book:

  • One blonde (white) woman traveled to San Francisco during the gold rush to look for a long lost half Chinese half sister

  • The father is dead (gone? disappeared?)

  • The father was a photographer, the blonde daughter has taken over the business and takes portraits and pictures to document the gold rush

  • The Chinese sister was (born in?) a Chinese brothel, she is a virgin and her virginity is for sale

  • Lots of references to opium dens, foot binding and jade gardens (euphemism for vagina)

  • White sister meets a guy and convinces him to help search for Chinese little sister

Any of this ringing a bell? I tried asking on SBTB a while back, but I don’t think it even made it on the blog!

[Gold Rush] Were miners in the California gold fields eating fresh or preserved oysters?

I'm reading the Dame Shirley letters, and many times she mentions having oyster dinners, oyster soup, and so on. She also mentions how difficult and expensive it was to bring supplies up to Rich Bar. Would these have been tinned oysters, or would the restaurants have made an especial effort to bring fresh oysters up from the bay area?
