A list of puns related to "List of Test cricket records"
If you're not aware, on the 15th of March 1877, Australia and England played the first ever official test match. In Australia's first innings Charles Bannerman hit an impressive knock of 165, the next highest score for the innings was just 18, Australia all out for 245. Whilst he held the record for highest test score for 8 years. He set a record that has never been broken with this innings.
He scored 67.35% of Australia's total score. A percentage that has never been matched by a batter. Michael Slater was the closest. In the 1999 Sydney test, he scored 123 runs at 66.85%. An extra three runs would have put him past Bannerman.
I'm always amazed that a record could be set in the first ever test match, which has never since been broken. To this day, a single player has never carried his team has much as Bannerman carried Australia that day.
This post will show how many series various teams have remained unbeaten at home in test cricket
England are perhaps displayed better than they have actually performed, having drawn 4 of these series, whereas India have won every single one. I chose not to include Pakistan games before they began playing in Pakistan again in 2019 against Sri Lanka.

I downloaded the list of all individual innings in test cricket since some 1870s - a total of 85921 innings. I have kept them grouped by the the batting positions, e.g., openers. So, ask the big dataset anything!
Here's a list of what is available per-innings:
Player: 'DG Bradman (Aus)'
Runs: '270'
Mins: '458'
BF: '375'
4s: '22'
6s: '0'
SR: '72.00'
Inns: '3'
Opposition: 'v England'
Ground: 'Melbourne'
StartDate: '1 Jan 1937'
Here's what I have calculated so far:
Batting Average over Decades, or Hmm when did Bradman retire?
Proportion of runs from 4s over Decades
Proportion of runs from 6s over Decades
Proportion of runs from boundaries (4s & 6s) over Decades
Some ground-rules/FYIs:
It's a huge data-set and I am working on a laptop, so it might take a while to complete some of the complicated requests. I'll try my best to answer all requests.
It may be possible to answer some of these things using statsguru, e.g., it can help you find averages over the decades, but it can't help you find the strike rate or any of the other things above.
I have statsguru wired up to my graphing API, so it's alright if you ask things that can be solved using statsguru. If you know how to use statsguru, feel free to post links of any data that is a filtering/grouping of the above dataset, and I'll upload charts for the same.
If you guys like this AMA idea, I'll do more in the future. You can also post suggestions in the comments.
I will be available mostly during the Aus-Ind test.

What do you consider the most impressive long-standing Test cricket records?
My personal top 5:
Sir Donald Bradman's career batting average - 99.94 (more than 50% ahead of the next-highest)
Jim Laker's match bowling figures - 19/90 (9/37 and 10/53 in the same match is still almost impossible to fathom - and is one of the the only Test records that's also a record in all First-Class cricket)
Sydney Barnes' series wicket haul - 49 wickets from 4 Tests (no other bowler has taken more in a 5 or 6 Test series, or ever taken even 12 wickets per match in any series with 2+ matches - and he did it away from home)
Charles Bannerman's completed innings contribution - 67.34%, or 165* out of 245 (he wasn't dismissed but retired hurt, and the record has stood for 133 years - since the very first innings of the first Test)
Sir Donald Bradman's career double centuries - 12 (out of 52 Tests, while all of the other players with 4+ double centuries have played at least 78 Tests)

> In judging the best performances, the cricket.com.au team considered the quality of the bowling attack, the difficulty of the conditions, strike rate, the length of the innings, the percentage of the team's total and the situation of the game.
> A player's previous record and relative experience plus the impact their performance had on a match and a series also weighted heavily.

... keep reading on reddit β‘It's time for the second cricket statistics AMA! This time we will be studying partnerships in Test Cricket - a total of 68,323!
List has the following fields:
{
'Player1' : 'DPMD Jayawardene'
'Player2': 'KC Sangakkara',
'Team' : 'SL',
'Runs': 624,
'Inns': 2,
'Wkt': 3,
'StartDate': '27 Jul 2006',
'Opposition': 'South Africa',
'In': '2/14',
'Out': '3/638',
'Ground': 'Colombo (SSC)'
}
Apart from this, I also have handy the list of matches and their results corresponding to each partnership. So you can ask questions like: How many 200+ partnerships have taken place in the 4th innings where the team has won the match? I have the list from last AMA as well (all individual innings in test cricket). Also have the countries of the grounds, so I can produce data grouped by countries.
One key piece of information missing from the data is the individual contribution of each player in a partnership. Looks like this is not easily available on cricinfo (please let me know if you find it).
Partners-In-Crime: Last time I had added a few graphs to the post, pre-AMA. From now on I am inclined to explore certain themes of the data. To this end, I have compiled lists of some of the best 4th-innings partnership that have resulted in the team either saving the match or winning it, in either sense, stealing it from the opposition.
Now, it's easy to find the highest (by-runs) partnerships in the 4th innings from cricinfo. Here is, for example, highest match-saving or match-winning 4th-innings partnerships.
But what about the longest partnerships - the ones that just rooted in the middle and frustrated the opposition? Unfortunately, Cricinfo doesn't show the length in minutes of partnerships, but we can approximate it based on the minutes data available for the individual innings. I have used some basic optimization techniques to approximate them and have made some cool tables along our theme!
So, here's the PDF
