#Tracy Takes Pole, Sets New Track Record Andretti and Fittipaldi next, all over 234 mph.

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Paul Tracy was quickest in the final practice before qualifying Saturday morning. He ran a lap of nearly 239 mph but thought that 233 was what he would run in qualifying.
He was wrong. By nearly two miles per hour.
Tracy's fastest lap -- the one that put him on pole for Sunday's Michigan 500 presented by Toyota -- was nearly 235 mph, 234.949 to be exact. The lap time of 30.645 seconds broke Jimmy Vasser's track record from 1996 by .037s.
The new record was a bit of a surprise. It really shouldn't have been, though, as Christian Fittipaldi (Big Kmart Route 66 Newman/Haas Ford/Lola) set the tone when he ran a lap at 234.230 (30.739s.). Fittipaldi had been only 14th-fastest in practice so he turned more than a few heads with his lap. Up until then, Kenny Brack's 231.772-mph lap was the fastest, Obviously the conditions were ripe for a new record.
Was Tracy surprised by his speed? "Well, when I saw Fittipaldi did a 234 I said, ‘We gotta do it'," he replied. And he did.
It wasn't without a little drama, though. "I slid a little in Turn 3 so I made a little change on the roll bar," Tracy reported. The change worked and he had his first pole since Milwaukee in '97. Saturday morning, Tracy reported that his top speed was just over 249 mph on the straights and he was asked if he looked at his dashboard readout to see what it was this afternoon. "When it got loose down there I wasn't checking my speed," was his laughing reply.
"I have to thank all the guys on Team Green," he said. "They worked really hard over the winter in the wind tunnel." And had the Honda single-wastegate qualifying motor helped? "Oh yeah, obviously. They did a good job."
Although he wasn't really disappointed with his run, Michael Andretti wasn't laughing about his qualifying effort. He came into the weekend trailing Roberto Moreno by two points in the championship. The point for pole would have halved that gap. It could be important at the end of the season.
"When I saw Christian's speed I was surprised," Andretti said. "Then I realized we had a shot at it [pole]. The car was very, very good. I thought I had it. I had just a little bit of understeer in the middle of the corners and that was probably the difference."
