It's common knowledge that Gully Boy was initially nominated for Oscars. However how does the process happen?
Does some association in India choose and send certain movies, or does the Academy choose a movie by itself?
Thank you.
Edit: Thank you for all the responses. Also I'm correcting myself "Gully Boy" was submitted for Oscars, not nominated.
I finally watched probably the most talked about movie of 2019. First it became famous by great audience and critic reviews and then infamous of winning all the awards and being a nomination for Oscar. I went into watching the movie with an expectation that it will be a good one and I was not disappointed. There were many great things about the movie but the best thing was how well it portrayed the struggle of Murad. The biggest complaint I had with big budgets, big star Indian movies is how they portray low income families. These characters are normally on the side but are still either shown highly melodramatic or they are shown in a patronizing way. However, Zoya Akhtar was able to show the struggles of Murad and his family in a very simple and realistic way but was still able to show the pain and emotion of the struggle. When Murad translated his struggle in his poetry, it was so smooth and understandable that I could feel every line of his poetry and the reason he has wrote it.
The movie was brilliantly directed and acted with amazing performance by Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz, Amrutha Subash and Vijay Verma.
I know the current environment is so anti nepotism and not without cause. However, I want to shout out to Zoya Akhtar. I have seen four of her work (luck by chance, zindagi na milegi dobara, made in heaven and gully boy) and all of them have been good (various degrees of good but still good). In this patriarchal world I feel Zoya has put her name as one of the good active directors in Bollywood. I know she has got helped by her surname but she has made her mark and with directors like her I see Bollywood reaching heights it probably has not reached since long time.
Days after Kangana Ranaut took jibes at Zoya Akhtar and her film βGully Boyβ, the filmmaker has now shared her thoughts on the same.
In an interview with India Today TV, Zoya made an appearance with her father Javed Akhtar and brother Farhan Akhtar and set the record straight that she wasnβt bothered by the criticism and that Kangana was entitled to her opinion.
When quizzed if she would ever invite the actress to her parties, she pointed out that Kangana had gone on every platform and said that she didnβt like her work and hence she βshouldnβt be putting her in that position.β
While taking jibes at the number of awards Zoyaβs βGully Boyβ starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi collected over the awards season, Kangana cited that Sushant Singh Rajputβs βChhichhoreβ was far more deserving.
Sharing her take on the matter, Zoya asked why Ranaut kept talking about awards shows when she herself βboycottedβ them.

I found a deleted clip of Murad in college, and he looks so much older than his friend and the other college people.
This is when I realized he honestly looked older than anyone in the movie. He even looked older than the character who played his mother, or they looked the same age. It honestly threw me off a bit and didn't allow me to immerse myself in the movie. I think he looked fine with Alia but other people shown to be his age or older than him? Definitely did not fit the college guy role.
I could be wrong. What do you guys think?
