BACKGROUND
Ethan Couch was involved in a drunk-driving crash that resulted in the death of 4 people. He was sentenced to 10 years probation in juvenile court for his actions and conviction on 4 counts of manslaughter.
He recently fled the country and was captured in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He's currently being transported back to to the US to face a judge regarding violation of his probation.
WHAT MAY HAPPEN NEXT TO ETHAN COUCH
Ethan Couch is kept in the juvenile system:
- He may be found to have violated his probation
- Either he recieves no consequences and continues on with the next 8 years of his probation or;
- He faces juvenile detention up until his 19th birthday at a maximum (April 11, 2016)
Ethan Couch's case is moved to the adult system:
- He may be found to have violated his probation
- Either he recieves no consequences and continues on for the next 8 years on adult probation or;
- He faces a maximum of 120 days in adult jail
- Note: If he violates adult probation (by violating again), he can be sentenced in line with adult guidelines. If his sentences are stacked under Texas law, this could carry a maximum of 40 years in prison (10 per count). This situation would not apply to his current issue, but could be relevant in the future if moved to the adult system.
The hearing to determine if Couch's case will be moved to adult court will be held on January 19th, 2016.

Ethan Couch's mother, Tonya Couch, has been charged with hindering the apprehension of a juvenile. This charge is a third degree felony and carries a potential 2-10 years in prison.
