Where can I try out electronic pianos?

Looking to upgrade my keyboard to an electronic piano (that has more of an acoustic feel) but want to physically try them out. Anyone know a place in the city where I can do that?

[TOMT][MUSIC] This piano melody I remember from either an electronic or Lofi hip-hop song (possibly sampled)

The melody in question, played sloppily on a software piano: https://voca.ro/11MRsaH2PYKg

  • I remember it was possibly pitched an octave higher, and more bell-sounding piano than what I played.
  • If I got it from YouTube as my memory says, it possibly had an anime artwork as the video picture and is from a playlist/compilation video on the platform. Possibly it was one of those "pov: you're x and y and z" playlist sort, if I did get it from a playlist/compilation
  • There is two versions in my head of the melody -- one where it was just the piano and looped, and the other is a full song with beats and everything.

My first guess was Snail's House from one of their "Ordinary Songs" albums/EPs, but after listening to all of them I couldn't find one that has that melody. Other than that, it could probably be a lofi hip-hop song...

Thanks in advance!

How did musicians tune to a standard note before the invention of electronic tuners? Especially with large instruments like pianos. How did they know each note was in tune?

Were they just tuned relative to itself? Like would a fully tuned piano in Paris be in tune to a piano in London? Or would they differ slightly while being in tune relative to only themselves?

Where to Recycle an Electronic Piano

Hey all! I'm still new-ish to Kalamazoo. I have an older electronic piano that I need to get rid of. I would try to give it away but the speakers on one side no longer work. Does anyone know where I can safely dispose of it? Or recycle it? Online searches aren't really helping. Thanks!

[TOMT][MUSIC VIDEO][~2000] Electronic style, CGI-like music video where a piano(?) starts out playing, while it slowly grows other instruments in an organic way, like a butterfly coming out of it's cocoon and unfolding it's wings

I recently dreamt of a music video I saw back in ~2003 which was both visually stunning for it's day, but also a great instrumental track as well. I've no idea of the artist or title after two decades, but fragments of the melody are stuck in my mind. I wouldn't necessarily place it into any modern category of electronic or trance, since things have changed a lot in the last 20 years. It was probably closer to house, or ambient chill maybe? I want to say it had a lot of sustained duration notes. Very melodic.

In the music video, the camera slowly circled what I think was an unmanned grand piano that slowly started "organically growing" other instruments like wind and string components. It gave off a feel of being part steampunk and part biotech in its design. The growths expanded up and out of the original instrument and slowly spread out to assume fantastical or stylized shapes that were simultaneously recognizable but yet significantly different than their real world counterparts. As they unfurled and firmed up, somewhat like a newly hatched insect whose wings were expanding and drying out, the new instruments added their notes to the original melody to make something of an electronic symphony score.

It was quite the emotional song; something that you would listen to for the feels which moved through perhaps sadness, hope, then joy. I don't feel like it was a dance track, so much as it was something to vibe out to in a comfortable bed or couch while wearing headphones, or maybe as an ambient track while you entertained.

Recommend an electronic keyboard/midi controller for music production and learning piano? ~$500

I'm looking for a larger midi controller or electronic keyboard (88 keys) to be able to use as both a midi controller and as a standalone electronic keyboard so I could feasibly learn to play piano on it (I mostly want to just get good enough to help out my production but something that at least somewhat resembles a real piano with weighted keys would be nice). My much smaller midi keyboard has pads, knobs, and faders so those aren't a necessity, but velocity-sensitive keys probably are. I would like to spend less than $500 if possible.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Looking for a suitable electronic piano for hospital patient

My Dad has had a stroke and is currently in hospital. He's always played piano and after 6weeks, is missing playing any kind of music terribly. I'd like to find a suitable keyboard which fulfills the following:

  • Is reasonably hard wearing
  • Is reasonably priced (can't guarantee it'll be well looked after)
  • Has full size keys (or near enough) and preferably weighted or feel weighted (minimum touch sensitive)
  • Produces a reasonable piano like sound
  • Less than 5 octaves (space is terrible in the ward so 3 octaves is probably ideal - he only has use of one hand atm too)
  • Is easy to use (not too many buttons or demo songs to confuse him)
  • Has a headphone socket (ideally), speakers are sort of optional but useful
  • Is available reasonably quickly in the UK

I could easily pick up a random thing but being a musician at heart, he can be quite particular and I want him to enjoy the experience. Any recommendations are gratefully received! Pointers towards second hand are welcome too.

Does this holy grail exist?

All else being equal, electronic music played on a keyboard synth is as artistically legitimate as that played on a piano and more artistically legitimate than music composed in a piece of software.

Keyboard-based synths (and electric organs) are, from the performer's perspective, no different from pianos with extra settings (to emulate a variety of instruments as well as to create purely electronic sounds), and a gifted synth player has as much talent as a comparably gifted pianist. Music generated within a piece of software like FL Studio, on the other hand, does not require hand-eye coordination or dexterity other than that of clicking and dragging the mouse and so requires less talent than music played on a physical instrument (acoustic, electronic, or anything in between). I will acknowledge though that computer-based electronic music can exceed traditional synth music by creating arrangements too hard for a keyboardist to play (I see great legitimacy in black MIDI and IDM for instance as they would be impossible or nearly impossible to be played on conventional synthesizers) or in using samples/effects like AutoTune for effect, hence the "all else being equal" caveat. I know that I will piss off basically every music fandom by saying this, but that's my two cents.

88-key Electronic Digital Piano Keyboard Dust Cover
  • https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002924520340.html - paid 4.46 CAD + 7.69 CAD (!) shipping. Oddly enough this was the cheapest I could find despite the shipping fee.

  • Seller took their sweet time to ship this. It took ten days to be sent to logistics. It then took 12 days to end up in my country. Then it took a month and a half for the package to get actually processed in Canada (they claim they didn't get it before then, but I know that's not true - Canada Post is known to leave the package on the tarmac for weeks and won't claim it has reached Canada until they get around to scanning it).

  • Item was just folded in a gray plastic bag.

  • I didn't open a dispute, not from lack of temptation... but it was clear from logistics information that it was just stuck on the tarmac, which is not the seller's fault.

So this is a simple cover with a drawstring which is used to protect digital pianos from dust. The main picture on the site suggests that it's made out of some sort of velour-like fabric, but it's actually vinyl (black on outside, dark gray on outside). I feel like it could tear more easily than fabric; it's solid enough though, just the nature of vinyl to tear more easily. But hey, local equivalents are 30$, and even on Amazon it's 20$ (admittedly for one made out of fabric, but still).

This took freakin forever to show up, to the point that I bought a substitute from Amazon, thinking that I would need to open a dispute for that item. Lo and behold, days after I got the Amazon substitute, it started tracking on the Canada Post site. So I returned the Amazon item as I have no use for two of those. A shame, I liked the fabric of the Amazon cover more. Oh, well.
