Seriously, gush about your favorite bands. I wanna hear some positivity only. Four is the number.
[Edit]: Fuck I need to go to sleep and there are still so many comments, new task - find uncommented comments in this thread and spread cheer and positivity, bond over similar favorite albums, songs, bands and just be fucking Powerful, okay?
Today I'm looking for your favourite prog metal bands who do not take themselves too seriously. I'm thinking; all over the place experimentation with funny/crude lyrics. Think the prog metal equivalent of Ween or Faith No More/Mr Bungle.
At the moment Devin Townsend seems like the biggest contender, for example; I've heard of a song called the Mighty Masterbator. Also, I was listening to Empath the other day and found myself really liking how crazy Devin went with experimentation , where in a prog metal album there are even snippets of disney-esque soundtracks.
Someone also recommend me Giant Squid the other day, who aren't directly hilarious or anything. But I get the sense of them being less serious and dark/ deep then other prog metal. And theyre fucking amazing, with good variance in different styles.
Edit. Just remembered about Twelve Foot Ninja too
and Haken -Cockroach King
Iβve recently gained interest in exploring this genre a little more. I come from a punk/hardcore/powerviolence background but I love bands like Bolt Thrower, Convulse, Frozen Soul, and Pharmacist.
Only thing is - I have the attention span of a pebble, and I lose interest in most songs very quickly if theyβre over 3 minutes. Iβm wondering if there are some good death metal bands that donβt have songs that feel like they last forever? Maybe some good grindcore bands?
Are there any new metal band out there where the vocalist actually sings and isn't screaming constantly? For example Deftones, SOAD, TOOL,
It can be of any time period. I love digging for obscure music so give me all your best suggestions.
My current favorite is Mortanius. They've only one full length out and it's super good melodic power. Great long-form compositions that fly by like they're five minute songs. Elements of neoclassical and prog in there as well. Vocalist is kinda strange but it works like a charm. His sense of melody and high notes are godly. I've heard friends describe them as Castlevania metal but I haven't played those games myself so I can't confirm nor deny that. Either way it was my AOTY 2019.
How about you?
I do like metal, but it puts me in a certain emotional space I donβt always want (specifically reminds me of an ex). A friend recently told me about Twin Temple. Any other openly Satanic non-metal bands out there to check out?
Mine would be Severed by Mudvayne and Slipknots Gently
(obvious warnings for racial slurs and heavy misogyny)
###A preface
The metal community has always had its share of weird stories since its inception. With its status as one of the less common genres of music, a lot of its drama tends to go unnoticed to those outside of the community - and boy is some of it spicy.
Metalheads are generally very nice people outside of the teensy little Nazi problems. Metalheads are also generally big dorks, especially once you get into more niche genres such as power metal, folk metal, and even pirate metal - some of the biggest bands of the genre that have been around since the early '90s sing about old mythology and classic literature. With the realization in recent years that cringe is dead and people should just do what makes them happy, these more niche genres have seen a rise in popularity despite geekier themes and lyrics that would get you stuffed in a locker back in middle school. Still, a lot of the music is super well written, and musicians in the genre are often extremely talented. This rise in popularity has led to a lot more women attending shows and community events in the space that is often traditionally associated as being a more masculine interest/'boys club', (which as one myself has been super refreshing!) This is important later.
###Wow, that music looks dorky
It is! And that is what spawned Gloryhammer and Alestorm alike, both headed by the same guy: Christopher Bowes. Chris and his bandmates entered the scene almost two decades ago and for the past several years now have absolutely refused to take the genre even remotely seriously. Gloryhammer specifically was created as a tongue in cheek take towards power metal as a genre, which was primarily filled with dragon-slaying power fantasy lyrics that are often basically [narrations of
... keep reading on reddit β‘Saw this in a gaming subreddit and thought it would make an interesting question here - whatβs a band or a record thatβs maybe critically or universally seen as bad, but you enjoy?
My vote goes to the first ISMFOF record. Something about it makes me feel like Iβm back smoking out of an apple with my middle school buddies. Iβve been laughed at more than a handful of times when people discover this on my Spotify recently played - and deservedly so.
Be honest, cowards.
(I know this could be asked in any Reddit regarding metal but Gojira are my favourite metal band so yeah.)
I always find it interesting to see what other music metal heads listen to outside of metal. Personally, I listen to a lot of rock ranging from the 60s to the 90s, rock was what I grew up on and was very much my gateway in to metal. Pink Floyd, Queen, Jimi Hendrix etc are some of my favs!
What about you guys?
Oh and there is only 1 prize. Winner takes all, MFs!
Sorry this has been won from a lucky guess but feel free to suggest killer bands.
A lot of power metal seems to have heavy influences from christianity, "missions from god" and things like that. Any that do the opposite?
Closest I've been able to find is some of Mystic Prophecy's stuff, but even that seems like kind of reluctantly giving in to evil influences, rather than embracing it.
In the words of Skeletor, "I don't like to feel good! I like to feel evil!"
I teach chemistry and keep it pretty straight. Tomorrowβs lesson is βmetallic bondingβ
I REALLY want to deadpan a lesson about two metal bands that merged. Especially if you can hear the βafterβ blend two music styles. Iβll do the whole about how the drum and baseline form an βinter metallic compoundβ and...you get the idea.
But I need the band names!
Sleigh-er!!! π€
