Cumberland County tried to go maskless and has had an incredible, exponential spike in cases. Their schools have already had more cases this year than all of last.It's about 3 hours long. A few highlights if you don't have the time:
- Grown men actually crying about "tyranny".
- Grown men showing up to the wrong debate but using the arguments they had anyway. Citing the Bible. Accusing the school board of a communist agenda. Injecting CRT into the conversation any chance they can etc.
- Grown men making a spectacle of themselves saying "I'm not here to put on a show".
- A parade of misinformed moms who have pivoted to their 10th reason now for why their kids shouldn't wear masks.
- People saying things that sound like "freedom words" and holding Bibles.
- A school board member shouting out cliches and grandstanding because he knows it will get him the most applause.
- A brave family who showed up masked and supported the decision to wear masks.
- The stereotypical dumb jock who speaks but makes no sense and says such gems as "I'm making sacrifices for myself" and talks about his dreams of the NFL.

While reading up on Cumberland County, TN's 1983 John Doe, I started searching for runaways from the, now closed, Taft Youth Center in nearby Pikeville, TN around that time.
CC John Doe was a black teen found stabbed to death along the side of a road on August 26, 1983. He stood roughly 5'8" and weighed around 160 - 170. It's estimated he'd been there for weeks, as his remains were badly decomposed. Apparently, officers had a suspect in mind early on, but not arrests were ever made and CCJD has never been identified.
Taft Youth Center, formerly known as The Pikeville School for Colored Boys as well as The State Training and Agriculture School for Colored Boys is a now closed reform school in neighboring Bledsoe County. The school was open In 1983 and I thought maybe CCJd could have been a runaway, but was unable to find any records on runaways.
Taft is "famously" known for the 1944 lynching of 17 year old James T Scales. Scales had been accused of killing the wife and daughter of the institution's superintendent.
Taft was founded in 1917. The site was chosen because a coal mine is nearby, and the children sent there were forced to mine coal. Punishment for misdeeds and bad behavior were common and often brutal. One report from 1938 states
>Corporal punishment is permitted by law and is the definite policy of the institution. The school principal administers all whippings. He uses a leather strap, 20" long, 1½" wide, and 1/8" thick, which it was said is applied to the clothed buttocks of the boys. All whippings take place in the school building in the presence of the entire population. From one to ten licks are given, depending on the estimated seriousness of the offense and on the boy's reputation in the institution. It seemed pretty serious to me, as there were ambulances, police cars and even a helicopter flying around the area. I don't think this seemed like a simple crash. Does anyone have any info?
