First batch of homemade "crème de violette" (violet liqueur)... After separating the petals of more than 1500 violet blossoms from their calyxes by hand, we are now finally (!) looking forward to a very special delight... (recipe in comments)

Is there a difference between Crème de violette and Liqueur de violette?

I made some Aviations and my liquor store didn't have crème de violette so I bought a spirit called liqueur de violette by Tempus Fugit spirits. The bottle says that the liqueur has a lower sugar content than the crème. The final cocktail results in a rose-tinted aviation instead of a blue aviation.

So for the cocktail experts out there, what are your thoughts on liqueur de violette instead of crème de violette? Did I lead myself astray and should I go hunt down some true crème de violette or is this substitution appropriate?

What's the difference between Crème de Mûre and Blackberry Liqueur, and what should I buy?

Although there have been a few questions on this sub about both of these, I can't find a post where anyone is actually asking about the difference between them. So what is the difference? Some people seem to claim that Crème de Mûre is made with wine, but I've seen at least one person refuting that. If it's not made with wine, it seems like that would essentially mean that blackberry liqueur is the same thing.

The reason I'm asking concerns two different drinks: The Bramble and Don's Own Grog from Smuggler's Cove. The Bramble calls for Crème de Mûre, while Don's Own Grog calls for blackberry liqueur (specifically the Leopold Bros. version). I'd like to only buy one new bottle for both of these. I'm leaning towards the Leopold Bros blackberry liqueur, since that's available in my area, and I don't actually see anything labelled "Crème de Mûre" at any of my usual liquor stores. I'm also not opposed to trying to make some blackberry liqueur myself, although I'm not sure what recipe to use (I've heard the 12 Bottle Bar book has a good recipe, but I don't see it mentioned in the table of contents in the Amazon preview).

I've wanted to get crème de violette (preferably Benoit Serres) for a long time to make (and try) an Aviation. Today I unexpectedly found the last 4cl bottle from a different french brand of violet liqueur I was previously unaware of in a store and I couldn't resist it. imgur.com/a/C4Ojts2

Bought Crème de violette and Maraschino liqueur for, you guessed it, Aviations. But what the heck else can I make with them?

Would be forever grateful if you could share some of your favorite uses for Crème de violette and Maraschino liqueur. Obviously doesn't have to be together - I just want to use them more (not to knock the lovely Aviation, but I could use a change).

[CAN] Looking for some Crème De Violette liqueur. Anyone willing to send me some?

I have been looking for some Rothman & Winters creme de violette for ages, and it just seems absolutely impossible to find. No online supplier will even ship to Canada.

If anybody around the world can pick up/order a bottle, and ship it to me, I will cover all cost, plus compensate for time spent.

I'm looking for this brand, specifically:

What bottles do you consider must buys?

Just about everyday I check my state run (VA) online liquor catalog to see if certain bottles are in stock. It makes me curious: what bottles can’t you resist buying if you encounter them?

I’ll be honest, I’m a little salty because I feel like our state’s liquor program is barren. I know supply chain issues are a part of that, and I can’t speak to pre-COVID times because quarantine is what got me into cocktails.

Anyhow I’m constantly looking for the following:

Buffalo Trace

ANY brand of allspice dram

A good crème de cacao, preferably Tempus Fugit

Crème Yvette

A good coffee liqueur such as Mr. Black

I’m a broke grad student, so collectors bottles aren’t even on my radar but if they’re on yours I’d love to hear about it!

Do you have this at home? Question for Advent of Cocktails 2021

Feedback from last years advent of cocktails (for context, here's the post) was to share the ingredients list early, so the plan is to share it a week in advance.

Based on the outcome from the voting we did earlier, it will include mostly Modern classics but also some Classics.

In order to finalize the lineup (but also for potential future Advent of Cocktails) I would really appreciate your help! If I had a rough idea about what some of you have in their liquor cabinet it would at least serve as an indicator of what I shouldn't pick.

Since there's no multi-choice poll on reddit I figured you could copy paste this list, and post a reply after REMOVING the ingredients/bottles you DON'T OWN, i.e. posting what you own of those. Thank you so much if you're willing to help!

- Grenadine

- Mezcal

- Jamaican Rum

- A smoky scotch

- Amaro Nonino

- Green Chartreuse

- Yellow Chartreuse

- Aperol

- Campari

- Cherry Heering

- Apricot brandy/liqueur

- Bénédictine

- Allspice/Pimento Dram

11th hour Nocturne Alchemy Resurgence reviews from a novice

Nocturne Alchemy's holiday 2021 and holiday 2020 resurgence collections come down tonight at 11:59 pm PST, so here are some seriously last minute reviews.

Affogato

Description: Vanilla Ice Cream accord, Italian Espresso Bean, Freshly Brewed Morning Coffee accord, Arabica Coffee Bean Absolute, Crystalline Absolute, Italian Cream and warmed Coffee Bean essence

Review: This started off as coffee and ice cream, which I enjoyed. After a while it would alternate between a nice coffee scent and something burnt and plasticky.

Description: I will pass on my sample, no plan to full size.

Area 626

Description: NA Eggnog accord, Fragrant spices of Nutmeg/Clove/Cinnamon, Buttered Rum accord, Buttery Coffee Cake accord and Bay Rum

Review: This starts as a sweet eggnog scent. On drydown the spices move to the forefront, supported by the coffee cake with a little bit of eggnog. After a while it becomes a little plasticky on me.

Verdict: I'm always tempted by eggnog scents, but the spice and/or alcohol notes are usually stronger than I like. I gather that others want to smell like homemade or nice boozy eggnog, while I just want a perfume that smells like the eggnog that you can buy in a carton at the supermarket. I'll probably pass on my sample and don't plan to full size.

Bastet's Bewildering Contessa Biscuit

Description: Gingerbread and spices, Grated Sugar-Ginger, Orange Zest, Apricot Skin, Crystalline, fresh baked Sugar Cookie accord, Buttercream drizzle

Review: I was expecting spicy gingerbread, but instead the orange zest was strongest on me, supported by sweet gingerbread with mild spices.

Verdict: This was a surprise hit for me, full size-worthy

Bellus

Description: Neroli, Lily of the Valley, Jasmine, Tuberose, Rose, Honeysuckle, Musk and Kashmir Red Musk

Review: This was a strong floral. I could pick out individual flowers, though they kept shifting around on me. NAVA's musks can be overwhelming for me, but I didn't find this overly musky.

Verdict: I enjoy florals, and I liked this one, but it might be a little strong for me. My sample will probably be enough for me.

Black Tails & White Whiskers

Description: Soy Milk Chocolate Mocha Coffee accord, Cacao bean, Warm Coffee, Chocolate Syrup, Sweet Cream and Whipped Cream

Review: Based on other reviews of this cat collection, my expectations were low, but apparently not low enough. This was bitter milky coffee on me.

Verdict: Nope

Caramel Chai

A couple of autumnal perfumes that didn't work for me

I often find that reviews of perfumes that didn't work for someone can be just as useful as glowing reviews, don't you? If someone says "this perfume had way too much dirt/patchouli/sugar/what have you," that's really useful when I'm planning my wishlist - and conversely, anytime someone says "this had far too much golden amber for me," it pretty much immediately goes on my list as something I'll probably love! So to follow up my post last week about autumnal perfumes I'm loving this season, I thought I'd offer this post on autumnal perfumes that didn't really work for me, whether it's due to my skin or my personal preference, and perhaps this too might be useful to you. In these reviews, I'm focusing on describing my scent experience rather than judging them with a numeric score. After all, what doesn't work for me might be your future holy grail!

Alkemia Autumn Fields [Crisp green pumpkin flesh, fresh Kadota fig, amaranth, cut orchardgrass, and oat hay] - this one is fresh and slightly vegetal, not unlike Nui Cobalt Squash Blossom [Cocobolo wood, orris root, carrot seed, sunflower petals, mandarin zest, and acorn squash baked with brown sugar] (though I like Squash Blossom much more than Autumn Fields). I don't really get the grass or hay, which is good for me (I don't love those notes), but nor do I get anything specifically identifiable as a fruity fig. Like most Alkemia oils, this one is "perfumy" rather than "smelling like stuff" which I tend to prefer.

Astrid Full Moon 10.31.2020 [Marshmallow crème, rice flower, lavender, tuberose, peru balsam, white lily, and oakmoss] - I do love white florals + marshmallow; however as it turns out I don't really like smelling like rice. If you do, this may be the perfume for you! I'm going to have to destash this one because I think I might be slightly allergic to it. (I'm allergic to lilies, so the lily note in this must be authentic!)

Nui Cobalt Energy Shield [A dark elderflower chypre with black agarwood, tonka bean, frankincense and fig] - from their Witches' Utility Blends collection, which came out at the end of July. In early August, it was a bit much for summer, but I thought I'd set it aside for fall. Energy Shield is not what I expected - I had hoped for dark & incensey but instead it is much more fruity-sweet. I get a huge explosion of dark, juicy, honeyed figs

Some Hexennacht Reviews From an Unskilled Reviewer…

I have so many reviews typed into the notes section of my phone and I need to revisit some of my hundreds of imps instead of the constant purchasing. I will be going through the piles of reviews in my notes and posting a handful at a time.

I am a longtime smeller and a novice reviewer so pardon me if I’m no good at this. Also, some of these may be old or discontinued. I will review anyhow. You can sometimes find them on swaps.

Editing Cyn doesn’t know why the spacing is all messed up. It doesn’t look like this pre-post

Today we have a bunch of Hexennacht Reviews… ——————————————— ——Necromancer: (Animalic accord, amber, black patchouli, cedar, Peru balsam, vanilla, cacao, caramel, cardamom, musk.)

•I was initially afraid of the cacao and caramel in Necromancer but ended but delightfully surprised.

•Initial impression wet: dirty basalmic and musky bitter cacoa scent with a tinge of patchouli. I like it. Kind of your run of the mill animatic woody dark scent.

• Ack! It’s still not completely dried down and there is this sudden weird sweet something that I do not like at all. This is short lived because here comes the cedar, sawmill cedar, with its friends cardamom and caramel.

• Dry: I don’t like caramel notes but this is like a buttery, homemade caramel oozing on top of some freshly cut sheets of cedar plywood with a little cardamon for some flavor. There’s still the tiniest bit of patchouli hanging out.

• The longevity on Necromancer is pretty good. After 5 hours, what I’m left is kind of a cedar rice crispy treat. Which is weird and nice.

5/5 I love Necromancer. It makes so many changes, I thought my nose was broken but after a few wears I get the same deal.

———————

—— Thanatos: ( Desiccated leaves, hedgerow blossoms, charred pinyon, aged cedarwood boughs, petrified tree sap, crisp fall air, laurel, clove bud, smoke-tinged balsam, santalum, and graveyard dirt.)

•Initial Impression Wet: Dried leaves and pine needles and cedar. This smells like the forest floor in early October.

• It does get a little smoother and more soapy on the dry down . I also smell a little dirt and something sweet. I think laurel is what provide the soapy smell because I get the same thing from Ghostship Scentporium’s Redrum.

• Lasting power is about 6 hours on me. It stays pretty close to the skin.

•Thanatos is going on a mild hike in early fall before the ground gets wet and soggy with someone who is really excellent at hand washing.

Review of 4 popular NAVA scents!

Hello IMAM! I'm a NAVA newbie, only owning the fragrance Pyramid Vanille 2 which is my all time favorite vanilla scent. I know that none of these scents are new, but I wanted to review anyway. I usually buy EPD format and spray in my hair. BUT! I wanted to get into purchasing oils as well. So I purchased a few and without looking at the notes I reviewed:

EGYPTIAN PEACH BLOSSOM

Summer Peach Orchard, Egyptian Sandalwood (Studio Limited Original : Santalum) and Egyptian Vanilla Orchid (Studio Limited Original - Kobalt) 2021 blend

Okay, I don't need to look at the notes to know this will be peachy. I can definitely smell tart, delicious peach. The vanilla is smooth and rounds out the other notes very well. There is a little bit of light floral blending together so that it isn't completely gourmand. Looking at the notes, i can't detect sandalwood, but I think that's just me. I usually don't notice sandalwood. This is very fresh, feminine and light. I actually really love this! Sometimes peach scents can turn urine-y on my skin, but this isn't the case here. Medium throw, lasts about 5 hours. Truly beautiful! 9/10

OPAL VANILLA

Bastet’s Vanilla Custard accord, Bastet’s Ice Cream Absolute accord, Crystalline Vanilla Absolute, Vanilla Pudding accord, Vanilla Liqueur accord, True Vanilla Absolute from pod/fleck/orchid, French Vanilla Whole Beans pods, Bavarian Crème accord, Vanilla Crème, Vanilla Caramel, Brown Sugar and Vanilla Cookie essence accord.

Yeah this is extremely ethereal. I've heard most NAVA Vanillas are amazing, and this one certainly is. On my skin it's like a heavenly cloud that wafts around me. It's magical. This is the older, more grown up sister of my Pyramid Vanilla 2. Still delicious, but I can detect the Vanilla Liquer note, which gives it a more sophisticated vibe. OK, I need to go buy every NAVA vanilla in stock. 10/10

SKY AMBER

Ethereal Vanilla essence, Crystalline essence, Vanilla Bean Absolute, Vanilla Cream, Cardamom, Egyptian Cedar, Egyptian Frankincense, Egyptian Sandalwood, Egyptian Rock Rose, Egyptian Patchouli, Egyptian Siam and Bastet Amber essence

Oh no. Amber can be very hit or miss on skin. I wanted a sexy spiced scent, but every time I order something that sounds sexy it doesn't work with me! This one went spicy Vicks VapoRub on my skin. The notes all sound like things that I love: gorgeous amber, lovely vanillas, sexy spices, light floral, that invisible sandalwood! But on my skin, they

[DREs] All References from Drag Race España S1E03

How you doing mis amores? Do you want to see my cucu list of explained references and jokes from Drag Race España's season 1 episode 3?This week was quite the ordeal! I did my best in trying to explain just enough for our international sisters to understand the cultural references in this week's runway without going overboard. I’m a Spaniard but (unfortunately) my region is not being represented by any of the S1 queens and I had to do a little bit of research myself, so I might have left something important out or introduced some mistakes. As always, please let me know in the comments if I can improve any of the info below and I'll edit this post!

If you want to check previous episodes' references, here you have them:

Now let's dive into this week's episode: MOCATRIZ

02:54 – Arantxa says that Pupi in that hair looks like Lydia Lozano, who is a famous spanish gossip journalist. She never was what you would call a serious reporter, but she’s now gone full-trash working for the most shamefully amoral show in Spanish TV, “Sálvame”. Anyway, here’s a clip of her singing “¿A quién le importa?” from where Drag Race España’s farewell sentences come. She also cries a lot.

03:47 – Hugáceo is wearing a white T-shirt with the word “Todes” on the front. This word is the non-gender version of “todos/todas” (All of us). We stan an inclusive queen.

05:12 – Supremme is happy to be holding a “pito” in her hand after spending several months in lockdown. “Pito” means whistle but is also slang for dick.

06:56 – Supremme calls the queens “Futbolisdrags” = Futbolistas (football players) + drag

Where should I go from here?

I've been trying to make cocktails I'm unfamiliar with without dabbling with too many liqueurs or spirits all at once, but I feel like I've hit a wall now and should add a couple of new liqueurs or spirits to the mix. What limited additions of liqueurs or spirits (let's say no more than three new things) would allow me to start exploring another broad and versatile facet of mixed drinks that I'm not yet familiar with?

My understanding is that most of the drinks I've been making are based on the daiquiri template. Here are some drinks I've either had, made, or plan to make. I've made these enough times that I feel like I have most of them pretty well balanced (still working on the Bee's Knees).

Here's what I have to work with:

Spirits:

  • Cognac (Hennessy V.S.)
  • Gin (Beefeater london dry, Tanqueray london dry, Hendrick's, Roku)
  • Pisco (Gobernator, La Caravedo Puro Quebranta, Quebranta Tres Generaciones)
  • Rum (Plantation 3 star, El Dorado 3)
  • Whiskey (Elijah Craig small batch)

Liqueurs:

  • Briottet Crème d'Abricot
  • Green Chartreuse
  • St-Germain Elderflower

Bitters: Angostura bitters

And here are some syrups I've never made before:

  • Creme de Coconut
  • Grenadine
  • Orgeat

Potentially relevant other information...

Things I like:

  • I prefer drinks to be spirit forward. (For example, I replace vermouth with gin in a clover club, and I skip the soda in mojitos.)

  • I think I prefer a dryer daiquiri template than most: 2 oz rum (Plantation 3 star), 3/4 oz lime juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup (based on a this thread, but that may also be because of the rum I'm using).

Things I don't like/want:

  • Highball variations (e.g. mojitos with soda, whiskey highball, dark & stormy) because they taste too watery.
  • Soda, tonic, ginger beer, coke, and the like (for the reason mentioned above and because I don't have them on hand for anything else).
  • Sweet vermouth (limited shelf life, and I don't have any uses for it outside of mixing drinks).
  • Things with limited applications (such as St-Germain Elderflower or Briottet Crème d'Abricot).

Things I'm not used to, but not opposed to:

  • Dry vermouth (Dolin): This single-handedly ruined clover club for me. Took me a while to figure out vermouth was the issue.
  • Mixing with cognac or whiskey. I'm more used to having these neat. I've tried several whiskey sour variations and they have all bee

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

[MEGATHREAD] List of New + Returning Limited Thanksgiving Seasonal items for October 2021! Not all seasonal products are in stores yet. Which Thanksgiving items (turkey, stuffing, cranberry) have you seen in your local Trader Joe's already? Which Thanksgiving products are you most excited for? 🦃

I know it's still October and not even Halloween yet but Thanksgiving is 4 weeks from today, so I thought it would be better to post this now than to wait, please upvote if you find these megathreads helpful.

Friendly reminder that stock dates and inventory can vary from store to store.

Not all "Thanksgiving" items will be in stores this week.

This is also the time when some Holiday seasonal products start to arrive early so you'll start to see a mix of early Holiday (Christmas) products along with Thanksgiving products already so I'll also try to include the ones that are starting to show up in stores already. I apologize if different holiday products start to get meshed together, it gets a little more difficult to organize everything by holidays around this time.

Note: I sourced this Fall list from Trader Joe's Table It! Guide + additional late Fall items that have been spotted in Trader Joe's stores that weren't included in the guide. List might not be complete. And some seasonal items not listed might still be showing up later in the season. Your mileage may vary.

Key: I tried to put pumpkin emojis (🎃) next to products that have showed up in October.

Please leave a comment if you've seen a new or seasonal item that's not listed here.
