[Cloth type question] I usually embroider on a tighter weave fabric (show right), but my mom got me this looser weave fabric (shown left) for my birthday. It looks like cross-stitch fabric, but I do not like to cross-stitch. Can I use it for crewel work? Or just regular embroidery?

How hard is crewel embroidery?

So I bought a vintage 70’s landscape crewel kit recently and I’m wondering what the learning curve is with crewel embroidery...

What do you use to secure your yarn in crewel embroidery?

My kit specifically says DONT USE KNOTS on the back, though I don’t know why. So how do you keep the yarn from pulling through? I have just been holding it but I find I’m using a lot of extra yarn ( long tails). I just found out about stitch markers, like the string type. Would that work?

Crewel Embroidery: Twill vs. Evenweave

I am getting back into crewel embroidery and the patterns call for a linen twill. My Friendly Local Needlework Store has both linen twill and a linen even weave for crewel. I know the difference is in the weave but is there a more substantial difference between the two?

Help please! πŸ˜ƒ. I am new to embroidery, have a question on Crewel threads!

Hello folks,

I recently started learning embroidery and got interested in crewel embroidery. I learnt that it's the type of thread that makes crewel embroidery rather than technique! I am having a hard time finding crewel threads in the stores near me. Do you have any suggestions or links for Amazon, ebay etc., for these threads?

Historical blackwork and crewel embroidery - where to start?

I’m a total beginner, and I’m mostly interested in learning to embroider so I can try Elizabethan blackwork and Jacobean crewel embroidery. (Though I’ve been lurking here for a few months now, and I’m incredibly impressed and inspired by so many of your projects and the variety of possibilities!)

I’m wondering how to learn historical embroidery. There are plenty of kits available, and maybe that’s the best place to start, but they’re pretty pricey. Do I start off with a kit and then move to a pattern book, etc? Should I start somewhere simpler with the basics of embroidery in general? I have a habit with hobbies of trying to run before I can walk, so I want to do this properly. :)

[CHAT] Crewel Embroidery

Anyone else think that crewel is overwhelming and a waste of thread? I want to be comfortable with it, but I just... so much... I can't. I like that cross stitch is about doing it "right", or if you have to go your own way, it's on your terms. Know what I mean? Crewelers: give me your tips in a way a cross-stitcher can understand!!

Does anyone here do Crewel embroidery?

I stumbled on a DIY-home blog that had an article about finding vintage crewelwork and thought "I could do that" ... So I ran to the craft store, found a simple flower pattern, and now I'm hooked. That was yesterday, by the way.

So, what I want to know, is does anyone have a favorite supplier? A trick to certain stitches? a favorite fabric brand/pattern book?

I've stumbled across a cute retro owl pattern [example] (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-rKVTzUNw-k/TINPgxHrgmI/AAAAAAAAAFk/FRpWRLyQam0/s1600/Kedra%27s+Owl.jpg) same pattern, different colors, also, i'm not done yet.

where would I look to find more patterns like this?

I just jumped into this, and I have sooo many questions! I'm just hoping someone else here has a teensy bit of experience, so I can pick their brains.

Has anyone done large scale work? I need supply tips please.

I want to embroider some art for my living room. I have done a mix of paint and embroidery before so I have a vision. My previous art has been smaller though so the stitches translated well with floss.

I want to do two large oversized pieces and I just don’t see my regular stitches (especially French knots) working with regular floss on this scale.

Has anyone else done anything similar? I was thinking of using yarn but I’m not sure what fiber content or brand would be a good go to.
