So it's understandable how TIU and A Million Little Things share similar story arcs, some similar characters, similar problems, but now they're literally sharing Chris Geere...

This isn't a competition thread, I'm just curious how Chris now seems to have a semi permanent role on AMLT and now has a role that could get more airtime on TIU.

The shows have had similar story arcs especially regarding child adoption. I think the common thought was that AMLT was dollar tree TIU at the beginning but now it's starting to feel like they shoot in the same lot with the same writers..

I am British actor Chris Geere, star of FXX’s β€œYou’re the Worst.” AMA!

Short Bio I’m Chris Geere, lead of FXX’s critically acclaimed comedy, β€œYou’re the Worst.” I play Jimmy Shive-Overly, a brash, narcissistic and self-destructive writer in a relationship with Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash). Aside from acting, I’m married to a beautiful singer/songwriter, Jennie, and have one young son, Freddie. I love woodworking and watching soccer (football to me!).

You can find me in season three of β€œYou’re the Worst" airing Wednesdays at 10:00pm ET/PT on FX Networks. If you need to catch up, seasons one and two are available to stream on Hulu.

Whilst you're waiting for the new season, check out Chris Geere in Ill Behaviour - very funny new BBC comedy.

It's a three part series of hour long episodes about three friends going to the most extreme lengths to treat one of their cancer. The subject matter is slightly dark but the show doesn't really feel that way. It's very witty with some cracking performances and proper laughs. Lizzy Caplan does a great turn as a misanthropic hedonist oncologist. Chris' character isn't a million miles away from Jimmy, but thankfully he's really bloody good at doing that.

Well worth your time if you can find a way to watch it.

You're the Worst star Chris Geere on how he started in TV and working in the US and UK

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 93%. (I'm a bot)

> Chris Geere is a British actor who trained at the Guildford School of Acting before landing work at the Royal Shakespeare Company before enjoying success in top TV shows such as Waterloo Road, Trollied and You're the Worst.

> How did the leap from working in the UK translate to moving to America and working on US TV shows? This is a nice story.

> How did you find the differences between working on US TV series to UK productions? It's a lot warmer! There's a thing called craft services over there, which is full tables of food and drink that keep your energy up all day, as opposed to here, where you're lucky if you get a cup of tea.

> I'm working on quite a popular comedy series in America at the moment and going back and forth to the States is amazing because it works so much quicker than it does on You're The Worst.

> There are a lot of visa issues and work permit issues involved.

> If it's between you and someone else and that other person has working papers and you don't, then unfortunately it makes more financial sense for them to book the other guy.

My biggest issue with Phillip's character

...is that he makes no sense. I genuinely can't figure out what the writers are trying to do with him. At first I thought he was just a bad cliche. Hollywood loves the sexist trope of the sarcastic asshole with a heart of gold who just needs the right woman to tolerate his cruelty and rescue him from his demons. I sort of hate that storyline. I am tired of seeing it and hate the idea that Kate, after all her work to love and accept herself and grow in confidence, would end up with a dude who treats her like garbage and has to be won over to seeing her value but it would at least make sense.

However the more I see of him the more confused I become. Why would a guy who hates children and has no idea how to interact with them become a teacher of children? He flips back and forth between showing concern for Kate and cutting her in a way that, in real life, would be a red flag for abuse. However I think we're meant to find it charming. The scene where he broke up with his girlfriend was laughably badly written and bizarre. For a show that is remarkably good at creating nuanced, lived-in characters he seems jarringly one dimensional. I have no clear idea what drives his character other than cruelty and obnoxious one-liners. As a huge fan of Chris Geere in You're the Worst I know he has the ability to do a lot with an unlikable character, but he has so little to work with here that it's falling flat for me.

I found myself wondering during this episode if they are trying to write him as someone neurodivergent/on the spectrum and just making a hash of it. Like they made the incorrect connection that difficulty reading social cues means you will act like a total jackass to everyone around you. It's really hard for me to see the writers being able to create enough of a character and arc in the time remaining for it to actually make sense that he and Kate would end up together or even to make him a believable coherent character.

New information about season 6!

This Is Us had a premiere for the final season tonight (not sure if there was any footage shown!) and there are a ton of new interviews with Dan Fogelman + the cast! I've been making my way through the interviews, but the most substantial was a Deadline article that offered good insight into the final season and the behind-the-scenes process. Some of it is new, some of it confirms what we already assumed... but it's nice to finally have concrete info on what to expect! I'll do a rundown of the article below, but it's definitely worth reading! Obviously spoilers if you don't want to know anything about season 6.

Deadline Article

  • Dan Fogelman: β€œAs we speak, we’re up to about the writing and crafting of Episode 15 of 18, so we’ve got three or four more to do. We know what they are, we have the plan, but we haven’t actually written the scripts yet.”
  • Familiar faces from the past will be back in the final season, especially toward the end of the season.
  • The back half of season 6 is incredibly complex. Fogelman: β€œIt involves a lot of movement, a lot of travel, a lot of time jumping and we haven’t quite gotten to the filming of that yet. We’re bracing for impact a little bit right now.”
  • Kate and Philip will be a "slow burn" according to Chris Geere.
  • Rebecca's relationship with Miguel will be explored at various points in time, including the "catalyst" for them parting ways following Jack's death and how they reconnected.
  • Miguel will get his own showcase episode.
  • Some of Randall's storylines: his journey to the "Rising Star" article, an arc with Deja (Sterling K. Brown: "as they figure out what it’s like for a young girl to become a young lady and how to treat her as such"), an arc with Rebecca (she is living across the country from him as her health declines).
  • Justin Hartley on Kevin's storylines: β€œHe’s dealing with his mom, he’s got career stuff going on, but it’s mostly the family and the kids, and his love life.” (He's coy about who Kevin could end up with - maybe he gets back together with Madison, maybe he revisits an old connection, maybe there's someone new.)
  • Additional storylines: Tess coming into her own, Malik at college, Deja's hardships as a teenager, Nicky getting married and bonding with the Pearsons.
  • Jack will continue to be in a "supporting" role.

Dan Fogelman on Kate and Toby

Since I see a ton of speculation about potential plot twists to the wedding scene in the Season 5 finale, I thought I would link this interview with Dan Fogelman. He explains quite a bit and doesn't leave anything open to interpretation. If you want to know where Kate, Toby, and Phillip are headed, it's all there in the article.

β€œThe Challenger” Opening Credits

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10322344/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm

I attached the IMDb credits for the episode so you can reference it, but I went and looked at the opening credits during the episode and everything checks out.

So, I sometimes like to check out the opening credits (usually during a rewatch since I’m not paying close attention to them on first airing) because they list who are going to be the β€œmain cast members” or β€œseries regulars” for the season. Even if a series regular isn’t in an episode, they’ll still be credited in the opening credits. We knew Chris Geere (Phillip) would be promoted to series regular, and the opening credits confirm that. Also very happy to report that Griffin Dunne is once again listed as a series regular!! He was in season 4, but he was only a β€œguest star” in season 5. This means we’ll have Nicky around a lot this season which is great since he’s my personal favorite character.

All of that is well and good, but I noticed a few things that I thought were interesting. First, the teenage/young adult Big Three (Niles Fitch, Logan Shroyer, and Hannah Zeile) are all listed separately. In previous seasons (or at least for season 5), they were all listed on the screen together. Probably doesn’t mean anything different for their characters, just thought that was interesting.

Second, in previous seasons, the preteen/young teenage Big Three (Parker Bates, Mackenzie Hancsicsak, and Lonnie Chavis) were all listed as series regulars in the opening credits, but for season 6 their names aren’t present. This doesn’t mean they won’t show up, but it probably means they’ll show up less than usual. I think there’s a certain number of episodes a character has to be in in order for them to be considered a series regular.

Lastly, and perhaps most interestingly, La Trice Harper is listed as a guest star. She is the actress that plays adult Deja in the 2030s flash-forwards. Obviously she’s not in the episode, so it could be a mistake, but it seems like an odd mistake to me. We do know she’ll probably be listed in the credits for the next episode since we’ve been told (spoiler alert) we’ll be getting a 2030s flash-forward, and I think her name showing up in the credits of The Challenger (especially by accident) all but confirms she’ll make an appearance in the next one.

I’ve seen lots of speculation on the white car, and after seeing Dan’s comments, I personally think Sally will be driving it. If Deja makes an appearance, we might see R
