Can one remove the top-half of a rear seat to make more space to accommodate a rear-facing child seat without jeopardizing the safety of the car seat and child?

I'm not sure if this sub can help with this question, but here goes:

I'm 6'6" and having a difficult time finding vehicles that fit my size, budget, and needs. I am strongly considering Ford's Maverick, but a rear-facing car seat doesn't give me enough room to be comfortable for anything more than a 20 minute drive.

If I removed the upper portion of the rear seat, it would preserve the lower half, lower anchors, and the upper anchors for a child seat, but would theoretically give us an additional 4-6" of space.

Can anyone speak to whether or not this is doable and whether or not it would impact the overall safety? I'm trying to discern whether or not the rear seat cushion provides a benefit to the car seat's security, as the upper anchor is separate and attached to the rear frame, so that itself shouldn't be compromised.

YSK: If you're in a car accident and you have a child car seat in the back, even if it doesn't look damaged, you should still report it to your insurance company. They will reimburse you for the full amount. Safety first.

Why YSK: Car seats are expensive and usually extremely safe. Even if your child car seat takes no damage during an accident, your insurance company should still replace or reimburse you for the full amount.

Discussion: Carpooling, Backseats, Child Safety Seats, and Roll Cages

Preamble: I am not car knowledgeable. Most of my car knowledge comes from the Fast & Furious films.

I think F9 is one of the few times that I have seen a person in the backseat of a vehicle with Roman riding with Tej and Ramsey. Another time would be Dom, Brian, and Vince riding in Jesse's Jetta to check out Johnny Tran's garage (off screen). Is carpooling with 3+ people in a fast vehicle not cool to the audience?

With more members of the family having children, I wonder how children would impact their car choices. Child seats can be placed in the front passenger seat though I think it is safer to have a child in the backseat based on Internet research so correct me if I am wrong. According to Wikipedia, Chargers from the 70's do have backseats though the two-door construction could make it annoying to secure young Brian in the back. Modern Chargers offer four doors so Dom could still go drive in his favorite vehicle with his son. Uncle Brian's can use four-door Skylines and have Jack and Olivia in the back. At the end of F9, I wanted the Skyline to pull up with the kids in the back with Sparco child safety seats so that they could be with their cousin.

If roll cages are installed in cars used in the Fast & Furious films, do they significantly reduce the space in the vehicle especially for passengers in the back? Would child safety seats still fit?

Your child should know basic gun safety by age of 7.

If your kid doesn't know how to properly handle a firearm by 7 years old (hell earlier the better) then you did something wrong as a parent. You should be able to put a loaded handgun on a table and your child should know not to point it at anyone and should be able to check if its loaded and always treat a gun as loaded no matter if it's loaded or unloaded. That's basic safety. Always treat a firearm as if it was loaded. Double check to see if it is or isn't loaded everytime you pick it up or hand it to someone. You should be able to trust your child with a handgun but keep them supervised at all times and keep your guns safe people. Unpopular opinion but that's why it's here. If you live in America or any other countries were guns are legal (even if you don't have them personally) teach them gun safety.

Edit and clarification The amount of people not understanding my post is kinda mind boggling. Teaching your kids to respect dangerous things such as a busy street or train tracks is important. Teaching kids not to run Infront of a moving car is important just like teaching kids to not play with guns. Guns are not toys and streets are not playgrounds. I never said kids should be able to be able to defend themselves with a gun (like some comments are assuming I mean by handle) that's crazy. thinking kids will never cross a street is crazy. And in some areas and especially parts of America (but any country that has guns not just America) kids are going to encounter a gun. Being able to check if it's loaded and being safe is important. Just like being able to realize if a car is on. or not. Kids shouldn't be around cars with the engine running by themselves same thing.

Pointy child safety seats

Why are the large majority of children' safety seats (carseats, boosters, etc.) seemingly designed to ruin the upholstery of my car? Is it lazy design or is there some sort of safety benefit? It seems like the designers literally went out of their way on some of these things to add as many hard edges to the underside as possible.

I am a certified car seat technician (child passenger safety technician). Ask me anything!

I was in a horrific head on car crash at 60 mph. My neck was broken, but my kids in the car with me, ages 9 months and 2 years at the time, were uninjured due to proper car seat safety. I was inspired to become certified after a first responder, also a CPST, said to me, "good job mom, you saved them!". I install car seats for families weekly, answer questions daily, and it was suggested I create an AMA. This is a no judgment zone! No question is silly and I have only found one family that was using their seat properly when I checked it, meaning mostly everybody is using car seats improperly.
