TIL there used to be so many oysters in the Chesapeake Bay that they piled up almost to the water's surface, causing navigational hazards. Then we harvested them by the millions, and now the population is down by 99.7%. It's one of "the largest documented declines of a marine species"

The last structure standing of what used to be Holland Island in the Chesapeake Bay. The island eroded away and this house was the only thing left standing. It was floating in the Chesapeake alone for years until it finally sunk in 2010.

Hawaii Mars I β JRM-1 BuNo 76819 first flown on 21 July 1945 and delivered to the United States Navy. It sank on 5 August 1945 in the Chesapeake Bay and was disposed as scrap. 1 of 7 Martin JRM Mars planes built.

Who is this little friend? I collected this jar about 2 weeks ago off of the Chesapeake Bay. It's shrimp/crayfish like and seems to have built a little den for itself out of a translucent secretion. Sorry for the poor video quality :(

[RIP] Hunter, 14 Chesapeake Bay Retriever
All dogs are special but once in a lifetime a really special dog comes into your life. Hunter was a half chocolate lab half Chesapeake Bay Retriever. He looked and acted exactly like a Chessie despite his mixed parents. He was completely full of personality, always hungry, always loyal and my CONSTANT companion. Photogenic, playful and loved and was loved by every person he came in contact with. Our house was "Hunter's house" in our neighborhood. Our own identity took a back seat to him. His mannerisms and need to be close to me always made him extra special to me.
This morning is the first morning since we got him that he and I did not do our morning routine, out to potty, food then back out to explore the yard for overnight intruders, back in cuddles and affection then a nap. He passed yesterday morning very suddenly due to paralysis in his larynx. He went out and suddenly could not breath. He was struggling terribly, looking at my to help. The wife and I raced him to the emergency vet 27 miles away. The alternative was surgery to modify his larynx and risk pneumonia. At 14 he was already having bowel issues and issues with stairs, his vision had degraded and hearing. We made the decision and due to covid we were not allowed in but they did bring him out sedated and intabated for us to say good bye and rub his ears. We are all completely distraught. I know it will pass somewhat but as a gruff old guy who has lost pets before and knew this was coming I am truly heart broke.
