A list of puns related to "Cetyl alcohol"
Have anyone noticed any fungal acne trigger with cetyl alcohol in the moisturiser and which moisturisers are fungal acne safe please do suggest... I do not know actually why it happens or is it only me..
I use Lubriderm not as a facial moisturizer but a body moisturizer. I like it because its been pretty good to my dry skin over the years an it has SPF 15. Its also quite cost effective and found at most any grocery or drug store. I apply twice a day.
I am a woman in my young twenties with fairly dry skin. I also eat a pretty clean diet and have had little issues with acne.
After looking at the ingredient information on the back of the Lubriderm lotion I found an ingredient called βCetyl Alcohol,β and βCetearyl Alcohol.β Its only the fifth and seventh ingredients on the ingredients list.
I usually try to stray away from alcohol in my products because of the influence of dehydration. Is this an ingredient I should be worried about?
I'm trying to add some slip to my very waxy-like, too quick absorbing cream.
I was recommended to use Cetyl alcohol, but I"m reading online to use Cetearyl Alcohol. Which one should I use? O.o
I know Cetearyl Alochol has Cetyl in it, so. help!
Thanks,
I have narrowed my breakouts to the fault of Cerave Hydrating Cleanser, Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30, NewCo Sunscreen w/Zinc Oxide SpF 15, and a numerous other sunscreens to the cetyl/cetearyl/stearyl alcohols in the ingredients.
What is your skincare routine like if you're in the same boat? I'd love to know what products you use!
EDIT: Wow, a lot of you use products with fatty alcohols in them still. Is it because the reaction is extreme? If you do use those products, please indicate if they do or not. I got excited and looked up some products you are listing, only to realize there are fatty alcohols in them. Thanks!
I am sensitive to fatty alcohols. I've been using Soolantra for about 3 months, it's been okay so far (definitely reduces the overall appearance of papules, but doesn't seem to prevent anything, and literally 0 things stop my red face). However, I'm starting to notice some congestion along the side of my face, generally where I believe I have seen congestion from fatty alcohols before. I also think my closed comedones that permanently reside on my chin are getting worse.
So, I'm really hoping there's a cetyl alcohol free formula floating around somewhere? At the very least, I am hoping I could rule out a potential bad ingredient for me while reaping the benefits of ivermectin.
?
Hi everyone! I'm on the search for new skincare products since I've been using all Cerave up until now, and I think that the cetyl alcohol in them isn't doing me any good!
I was using:
I ditched the cleanser, but now am searching for new moisturizers. I want to find things without fatty alcohols, but I also really want my new moisturizer to have niacinamide, like the Cerave PM - so I'd at least want it in my night time moisturizer - not as concerned about it in my AM moisturizer. I have seen the list of cetyl alcohol/cetearyl alcohol free moisturizers, but I specifically want niacinamide in it too! I have pretty bad PIH, and I think it really helps.
As far as my AM moisturizer goes, if you have any suggestions for that too, I'd be open. I'd really prefer something that also has SPF since that's the least I can do. But again, I'm looking to get away from the fatty alcohols.
Also, although not *necessary if it's a decent product, it'd be a plus if it was something I could get at Sephora. I figure if I'm going to be buying it anyway, I might as well be able to get rewards points & VIB for it. Thanks everyone!
I get closed comedones whenever I use CeraVe in-the-tub, and I assumed from Reddit βresearchingβ that I may be sensitive to fatty alcohols. But I do not seem to have comedonal issues with CeraVe PM.
The thing is, Cerave PM also contains fatty alcohols. Itβs got only cetearyl alcohol, however, whereas CeraVe Tub has both cetereayl alcohol and cetyl alcohol.
Is is possible to be reactive to cetyl and not cetereayl? That seems weird to me because, if Iβm understanding correctly, cetereayl alcohol is composed of cetyl and stereayl alcohol. I have only a basic understanding of chemistry though.
Thanks in advance for any input!
I'm hoping I've finally found the solution to all my skin problems!! At the beginning of the year I decided to start taking better care of my skin which was very dry and dull but otherwise not spotty or red. I have a history of eczema but never had acne or allergies that I knew of. I was using nivea soft creme daily and no sunscreen or actives. Never washed my face with anything other than water. So I bought sunscreen, lactic and salicylic acid from the ordinary, baby oil for ocm, a milk cleanser (l'oreal fine flowers) and some fancier moisturizers. I tried lots of moisturizers and every time, after 1-2 weeks, my face would get itchy and red blotches would appear. It was especially bad on my cheeks. These were the ones I tried that made me itchy:
All these are supposed to be super gentle but my skin hated them!! The only thing it could tolerate was the nivea soft creme. Eventually I found this post about coconut derivatives:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1dd5ov/psa_for_my_fellow_sensitive_skin_types_regarding/
And all of the creams and sunscreens I tried except nivea soft creme contain cetyl alcohol and/or caprylic capric triglyceride!!
I hope this is it and I'll finally be able to find products that give me glowy hydrated skin and sunscreens that don't make me itchy. So far the safe products I'm keeping are:
Thought I'd post in case this helps someone who's tired of reacting to everything
Hello!
After a lifelong struggle with every type of acne imaginable, I finally found a routine that kept me mostly breakout free and kept my dry skin under control (usually super oily but get brutal dry spots if I don't moisturize). However, I still have tons of CC's on my chin and cheeks.
Current routine:
AM: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, Pixi Glow Tonic, CeraVe AM, Bare Minerals foundation
PM: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser (used to use the Hydrating Cleanser until I saw it had Cetyl Alc.), CeraVe PM moisturizer
After reading thru this sub, it seems that the Cetyl Alcohol in the CeraVe products is the likely culprit for my CC's. I ditched the Hydrating wash and just use the Foaming one now (as it does not have C.A.). I was hoping you genius people knew of a good alternative for moisturizers. I love the CeraVe PM because its very non-irritating, light, moisturizing, and inexpensive. Would love to find one before the winter air/indoor heat destroys my skin again!
Also any other recommendations for CC's are welcome!!
Thanks!
Keep in mind that this is ONLY for products WITHOUT Cetyl/Cetearyl/Stearyl Alcohol. These products may contain other ingredients that irritate your particular skin type, such as squalane, aloe, or silicones. Please remember to always patch test when starting new products, and begin things one at a time!
I'd like to add that most of these alcohols are found in conjunction with cetearth-20, which is what makes many common creams a problem for people. Some people may find they cannot use any fatty alcohols, while others may find they do fine with them as long as they are not found in conjunction to cetearth-20.

I'm currently using Paula's Choice Earth Sourced Antioxidant Enriched Natural Moisturizer on my face with a bit of shea butter mixed in, in the morning and night right after washing my face. My skin is still so dry!
What else is out there that is good for people who can't use products containing cetyl/cetearyl alcohol (aka "fatty alcohols")? A while ago when looking into cetyl alcohol-free moisturizers, I found a lot of gel-based moisturizers, but those don't seem like they'd be rich enough for these cold, dry winter months.
Hi, it's been a while since I posted here -- I always feel so stupid when I ask questions.I tried searching but couldn't find anything substantial on ammonium lactate.
My derm gave me the perscription AL (but I only saw her once because she was one of those one-size-fits-all-doesn't-take-concerns-seriously types) and I've used it as my evening moisturizer on and off for about a year now. In fact, I guess it's a good idea to post my routine.

Also, I have a TERRIBLE problem with the fatty alcohols (cetyl etc) that gives me disgusting closed comedones everywhere and along with the PIH it really really makes me look absolutely disgusting.
Recently I went to Japan as a host student for three weeks; I brought all my skin care stuff with me, which I came back from a month today, and was really good about following my routine. Then, when my group stayed in a hostel I left my wash behind (!) and had to use the wash that my host student had, which of course was written in Japanese. Obviously it had cetyl alcohol in it, because now I'm broken out in CC's that I had JUST gotten rid of from having used CeraVe in the tub.... in December. The Stidex doesn't seem to be helping my CC's at all. I thought it was supposed to get rid of that stuff? And the ammonium lactate, I read, is a AHA which is supposed to get rid of CC's too. I'm confused and I feel like an idiot but I'm panicking because I look like a piece of garbage.
Additionally, I have severely damaged hair from overbleaching and it's a disgustingly ratty dry mess (I'm Jewish and I have a Jewfro which I'm trying to grow out) and it won't grow anymore. I tried to find conditioners without the alcohols in them but they only seemed to dry my hair out MORE. I finally broke down and bought the ones with the cetyl alcohol in them and just said I wouldn't let it touch my skin, but now all the skin by my ears, my scalp, my hairline, my back... Everything is broken out. Everything. My hair and my face are both ruined and it only adds to the
... keep reading on reddit β‘I'm totally aire that every product with cetyl alcohol breaks me out and if It has niacinamide i'll break out even worse, but i've been using a cleanser whose second ingredient is cetearyl alcohol and i've not breaks. Is It possible? The latest product that has broke me out is cerave hydrating cleanser
I know alcohol in hair products is bad because it is drying. So what's up with cetyl alcohol? It seems to be in all conditioners. Is it drying too? Or is cetyl alcohol different?
So I found out that I may be sensitive to what I thought was cetyl/cetearyl alcohol when I first used Burt's Bees deep cream cleanser and my face turned into a tomato along with the burning and itchy feeling.
Ingredients: water, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, stearic acid, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, coco-glucoside, silica, quillaja saponaria bark extract, chamomilla recutita flower extract, echinacea purpurea extract, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) leaf extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, tocopherol, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, fragrance*, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) water, menthol, sucrose stearate, xanthan gum, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil (huile de colza), glucose, alcohol, sodium chloride, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase, potassium iodide, potassium thiocyanate, limonene, citral *natural fragrance
I usually have combo/dry skin as of late
Also, I tried out the Garnier sensitive makeup wipes and it burned so badly I had to rinse with cold water. Here's the ingredients for those : Ingredients:
Aqua/Water, Glycerin, Ammonium Polyacryldimethyltauramide/Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Cetyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Disodium EDTA, Glyceryl Stearate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Myrtrimonium Bromide, PEG-100 Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil/Sweet Almond Oil, Rosa Gallica Extract/Rosa Gallica Flower Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopherol, Xanthan Gum.
But, at the moment, I'm wearing an overnight honey mask from Sephora that has cetearyl alcohol in the ingredients and my face feels fine.
Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Betaine, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Tremella Fuciformis (Mushroom) Extract, Mel (Honey) Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Cetearyl Glucoside, Sodium Hydroxide, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, T-Butyl Alcohol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Fragrance, Potassium Sorbate, CI 19140 (Yellow 5), Sorbic Acid, CI 14700 (Red 4).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This would be my holy grail! I really would love to try the EltaMD PM moisturizer, which fits my description, except it is a fortune to get shipped to Canada ($50 and above with shipping). Any ideas?
For a very long time, I've struggled to find the right combination of products for my skin, which is dehydrated and prone to breakouts. After a lot of trial and error, I've come to believe the breakouts are the result of a sensitivity to cetyl alcohol. I've replaced my cold cream (Albolene unscented, for anyone frustrated with Ponds' new formula) and cleanser (CeraVe foaming), but cetyl alcohol seems to be in many, many moisturizers (CeraVe in the tub included).
Can anyone recommend a moisturizer without cetyl alcohol? From my research, Cetaphil's Daily Facial Moisturizer appears to fit the bill, but some reviewers have noted a sensitivity to the Parasol ingredient, and that worries me. Any recommendations would be so, so welcome!
Anyone have one?
I've been using Elta MD physical SPF 41 and like it a lot, but it isn't moisturizing enough for my skin, and I'd really prefer not to use a moisturizer AND a sunscreen in the morning, because the more products I use, the greasier my face becomes throughout the day.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
I was reading up on cetyl alcohol on Wikipedia, where it stated that cetyl alcohol is commonly derived from palmitic acid (obtained from palm oil). I've read that it can also be obtained from petroleum, but cannot find a source other than "the internet". It used to be derived from whale fat, so I guess it could be worse...
As some of you know, palm oil has devastating effects on the environment as well as on humans living and working in those environments.
I'm not trying to harp on anyone, just trying to inform. Palm oil is found in a lot of cosmetics and food products. We can't make everything better, but voting with your money by being informed of your choices and impact as a consumer can help.
As title states I know I break out from cetyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol. This leaves out a ton of moisturizers and sunblocks for me. I saw a new drug store moisturizer I'd like to try but it has stearyl alcohol in it. Didn't wanna waste the money if it would break me out like the other fatty alcohols. If it is different I'd be willing to give it a shot. Thanks!
I ordered the Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream because regular foundations tend to be too drying on my skin. It hasn't arrived yet but I am obnoxiously sensitive to fatty alcohols (cerave moisturizer cause a cystic breakout sensitive) and while reading the ingredients for the BB cream I noticed Cetyl PEG/PPG Dimethicone or something like that which instantly made me a little worried. Is this the same thing as fatty alcohols and will it cause problems for me?
The reason I ask is because I'm starting to suspect my new moisturiser is breaking me out.
Here's the ingredients list:
>Aqua (water), paraffinum liquidum, glycerin, petrolatum, cetearyl alcohol, squalane, dimethicone, ceteth-20, glyceryl stearate SE, stearic acid, laureth-3, glyceryl stearate, methylparaben, dichlorobenzyl alcohol.
Bolded ingredients are ones that are new to me. Italicised ingredients are ingredients that were present in products which previously broke me out. Ceteaeyl alcohol comes under both groups though.
Do they exist? I've tried several moisturizers over the years and the only one I've found that has actually worked without breaking me out is Clinique's DDM gel. I would keep buying it, but it's so expensive. I have combination/acne-prone/sensitive skin. I suspect, based on comparing ingredients between things that have and have not made me break out, that cetyl alcohol is a problem for me. Fragrances are also iffy. Are there any cheaper moisturizers available out there? (In the US)
is Cetearyl Alcohol , Cetyl Alcohol , Citric Acid good or bad for skin ?
