A list of puns related to "Autonomic nervous system"
The first couple sentences of the pathophysiology of autonomic dysreflexia of an article on NCBI are as the following "Cutaneous or visceral stimulation below the level of the spinal cord injury, initiates afferent impulses that elicit reflex sympathetic nervous system activity. The sympathetic response leads to diffuse vasoconstriction, typically to the lower two-thirds of the body, and a rise in blood pressure." I don't understand how the afferent impulses can trigger a SNS response that will then cause vasoconstriction without having a signal transmitted to the brain. But in this case, any signal transmitted by spinal nerves will get stuck at level of injury and cannot reach the hypothalamus. In terms of those transmitted by cranial nerves, they can reach the brain but from the brain no signals can reach below the level of injury, hence how can the SNS be activated then? I'm so confused by this! Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll leave the link to the article below. Again thanks so much!!!

I see certain sources list them together, but then I see the Visceral Nervous System being listed under the Somatic Nervous System, and then I see it listed as a third Nervous System that is a type of a PNS?
I understand that the Somatic deals with Smooth Muscle so voluntary control and then the Autonomic would be things we can't control like blood flow or heartbeat but then what is the Visceral Nervous System?
Does anyone know of any studies looking at the impact of keto or fasting on your autonomic nervous system, particularly heart rate variability and blood pressure control or vagus nerve tone? Or even a good explaination of any link between the two would be really helpful.
I have a condition called POTS where my body is unable to properly control my heart rate and blood pressure appropriately. Imagine brushing your teeth while your heart rate is 170bpm and that's my life. It's a form of Dysautonomia, there's no cure only lifestyle changes and some drugs to help reduce some symptoms.
I've been keto for years even before I got diagnosed and told a low carb, low fibre diet is beneficial. I'm always in nutritional ketosis and when I used to do short fasts I had so much energy but because I'm nearly house bound right now I'm trying to learn everything I can about external influences to my ANS. My nights are spent searching for papers so I thought I'd tap into your knowledge base for this one.
Really appreciate any pointers.
19M Can the autonomic nervous system be healed ? Repaired ?
Itβs no secret that extreme stress can cause wear on your autonomic nervous system, but since Iβm no doctor, whatβs your opinion on this?
Can the ANS be healed / repaired over time?
farting during sex is traumatizing
I guess this is a difficult one. But is there anything out there that could influence/balance the ANS?
Define AUTONOMIA:
>" Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for conditions in which the autonomic nervous system malfunctions. " [ANS]
> " The autonomic nervous system is a control system that acts largely unconsciously and regulates bodily functions, such as the heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, pupillary response, urination, and sexual arousal. This system is the primary mechanism in control of the fight-or-flight response." - Wikipedia.
ANS are nerves & brain functions not covered by the voluntary nervous system.
When I explain this to my associates, friends & audiences, they still cannot understand. It is much easier to say what the ANS does not include.
> " The somatic nervous system (SNS or voluntary nervous system) is the part of the peripheral nervous system associated with the voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles. The somatic nervous system consists of afferent nerves or sensory nerves, and efferent nerves or motor nerves. - Wikipedia.
Lots of medical stuff, that is hard for non-medical people to understand. It avoids the fact that's much of the SNS is buried deep into our brain. So my brain stem injury creates ANS problems, not SNS problems.
Final NON-MEDICAL definition of ANS:
IF you can think, feel and consciously controls it, it is NOT ANS.
So any "intelligent" person that's lacking self-control, is being controlled by their ANS.
PLEASE agree, disagree, or comment
It's clear it contains motor neurons. It's clear the somatic ns contains both. But does the autonomic ns, parasympathetic or sympathetic, contain sensory neurons, to relay maybe how the targetted organ is doing to the brain, even if we do not consciously feel it?
I'm a changed person 2 years since severe hyperthyroidism. Carbimazole was very successful, in 4 months I was euthyroid, I stayed on it for a year, and have been euthyroid since. But I still felt hyperthyroid. I still had tachycardia and palpitations to the point of struggling to get off beta blockers. I had to change my lifestyle to manage my heartrate, blood pressure, anxiety and other ANS symptoms. Very slowly I've improved a lot but I feel like I'll never be the same. I feel physically out of whack and mentally tormented most days.
But I'm thankful every day I don't have to deal with my thyroid. But I often get the thought that without advanced healthcare I would have died, almost like I was meant to by nature, and now I pay for cheating nature. I'm just so done with life most of the time.
Summary: The Wim Hof method, and Tummo Meditation, are accessible means of self-regulating the nervous system by means of breath control, visualization, and gradual, non-forced cold exposure. The following is a report of a week-long trial during which I taught myself how to heat my body when exposed to below freezing temperatures, suggesting that at a very low cost investment in time and energy, anyone can learn to consciously control their autonomic nervous system, under the adage βif I can do it, anyone can.β Also included are the method followed, instructions for both, and with my understanding of the effects of each.
Interested in claims made my Wim Hof, and wanting to learn how to increase control over my physiological system, I undertook a two-phase trial to explore Tummo Meditation and a modern derivative, the Wim Hof Method. As it turns out,Β conscious thermogenesis and consciously controlling the nervous system is far easier to learn than I had anticipated.
Phase 2: Practical Application, was expected to take a week, but after two days in alpine conditions, results were satisfactory enough that I cut the trial short. I also experimented with other meditative techniques such as bandhas, visualizations, and various asanas in order to assess their viability in assisting with the practice, and got some good views along the way.
Keep in mind: any and all claims are entirely subjective. Iβm not doing this to prove anything, if you want scientific proof and graphs, thereβs boatloads online already. The point of this post is to share my experience, nothing more.
The Wim Hof Method (WHM) has made the rounds over the past few years with some pretty serious claims, all backed up with scientific credibility. WHM breathwork decreases blood acidity, Wim Hof himself has accomplished spectacular things, and is a real personality:

Another, more ancient method of withstanding cold exposure, Tummo meditation, consists of a combination of breathing techniques and visualization that claim to allow control over, among other things, oneβs body temperature. Monks can do crazy things, like ra
