What would it take for a Democrat to successfully primary Biden in 2024 and become the official presidential nominee for the Democratic Party?

Has a president running for reelection ever been successfully primaried by a politician of his own party and replaced on the ticket?

There was talk of Republicans primarying Trump in 2020, but that didn't happen, because Trump was too popular with Republicans.

1988 Democratic-Republican Party presidential primaries | FL;DR

List of presidents since Watergate, which caused the new party system:

  • 1974-1977 Gerald Ford (DR)
  • 1977-1981 Jimmy Carter (FL)
  • 1981-1989 Ronald Reagan (DR)

Summary of Ronald Reagan's term, also in 1987 congress passed a law that made presidential primaries happen in one day in every state for a party (but the party got to choose when that date would be)

With an incumbent president being term-limited, his party has had many people announce their candidacy, including the vice president, who some in the party are wary of. The president, Ronald Reagan, has not made an endorsement.

George Bush: George H.W. Bush is the incumbent vice president, but he is much less popular amongst Americans than his boss. Despite this, he follows the conservative guidelines: having the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer in schools, keeping capital punishment, creating a Human Life Amendment, low taxes, and gun rights. When the Iran-Contra affair became public, Bush claimed that he had been "out of the loop" and unaware of the diversion of funds, which has lead many of the liberal Democratic-Republicans to not trust him, believing that he was indeed aware of the affair. An endorsement from Reagan would almost definitely secure him the nomination, but Reagan still remains silent.

Paul Simon: Paul Simon has served as a senator from Illinois since 1985 after being elected by a very slim margin in 1984. Describing himself as a "pay-as-you-go Democratic-Republican", Simon represents the liberal wing of the DRP, and is a vocal critic of Reagan's foreign policy. He is famous for constantly wearing his horn-rimmed glasses and bowtie. He is also seen as a reform candidate: he has attacked opinion polls, saying that politicians practice "followership" instead of "leadership" by casting votes based off of public opinion instead of what they think is best for the nation, and he has attacked the growing occurrence of obscenity and violence in the media, which has gained him slight popularity amongst socially conservative Christians, specifically evangelicals. He is very popular amongst suburbanites.

Bob Dole: The first ever Democratic-Republican vice presidential nominee, Bob Dole has served as a senator from Kansas since 1969, and is the current leader of the Senate Democratic-Republican Conference an

A National Nightmare | 2024 Democratic Party presidential primaries

President Biden has chosen not to run for re-election, citing his age and finally staying true to the claim he made in 1987 that "It's time to pass the torch to a new generation of Americans." Biden's presidency has seen the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which was viewed as mishandled by most Americans, the passing of infrastructure bills, and above all, a near full recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, his chosen successor is, of course...

Vice President Kamala Harris of California

https://preview.redd.it/e0gj2kxlis681.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31b21e57b66401f32cad91bd4c4d5aa65839d53f

Harris' key point as she campaigns is the Biden administration's largely successful actions taken against the coronavirus. These include vaccine mandates implemented earlier into Biden's term, with narrow approval from Congress in 2022, and the eventual lifting of most restrictions. She is running with a safe, moderate stance on most significant issues, such as the expansion of the Affordable Care Act, universal background checks on all firearm purchases, and the protection of the environment to combat climate change.

Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey

https://preview.redd.it/6ivn7itmis681.jpg?width=1160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9176fa7f5181372a66af05344d9a2ffdd7d77539

Murphy is considered to be the candidate of the party's more left-wing faction and has served as Governor of New Jersey since 2018. He has repeatedly criticized Harris' candidacy, arguing she and her administration have not taken enough to steps to combat some of the nation's most significant issues. Murphy supports Medicare for All and the Green New Deal, arguing progressive change is needed to ensure the welfare of America's citizens. He also advocates for a ban on the death penalty and the legalization of marijuana. Harris argues that Murphy's policies are too idealistic and should not be in the interest of voters during such a highly contested election.

The reason this scenario is a national nightmare will be revealed soon...

Is there any serious discussion within the Democratic party to implement ranked choice voting for the 2020 presidential primary?

In 2016, the Republican primary had nearly 20 candidates running for the presidency and we saw how many of these candidates with similar platforms split the vote, allowing Donald Trump to rise to the top of the race.

The Washington Post is speculating on up to 40 candidates running in the 2020 primary for the Democratic party. With this exorbitant number of candidates entering the race, has there been any serious discussion within the DNC to implement ranked choice voting during the primary process?

1964 Democratic Primaries -

I will do the 1964 Democratic Primaries (which are more complicated than you would expect), then do the Presidency based on the Results and stuff from November 22 to the 1964 Election.

Scoop Jackson -

Scoop Jackson, 36th President of the United States

Henry M. Jackson, known by everyone as "Scoop" has had an eventful Presidency since that faithful day when JFK was shot. After much MUCH hard work, the Voting Rights Act passed Congress on February 10, 1964. Jackson focused his attention on getting the Economic Oppurtunity Act of 1964 passed. Thanks to his and Senator Johnson's efforts, the bill did end up passing. The bill created many Government Agencies such as the OEO, VISTA, Job Corps, CAP, and a few others. The OEO (which was the crown jewel of the act) was run by Kennedy in-law and Director of the Peace Corps Sargent Shriver. "Scoop" has a big domestic agenda planned if he got a 2nd Term in his "A Better Future". However, for now - another issue lingers. Vietnam. In late February after the VRA passed, Scoop sent an extra 20,000 "advisors" into Vietnam. Scoop also began sending US Ships into areas around the Vietnamese coast to have a powerplay against the Vietnamese and talk of the bombers getting into action began with Scoop beginning it. What happened instead was something far more dramatic. The former moves caused Secretary of State J. William Fulbright, Undersecretary of State George W. Ball both resigned, and UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson all resigned. This was called the March Massacre in the press (somewhat like Mac's Night of the Long Knives). The New Cabinet changes would lead to the hawks dominating the Cabinet. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara became the new Secretary of State, National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy became Secretary of Defense, Assistant Secretary of State William Bundy became Undersecretary of State Bundy and the President of the Rockefeller Foundation, Dean Rusk became Ambassador to the UN. Anyway, back to the incident. Soon After, Robert Kennedy announced his In two days, it was widely reported that North Vietnamese attacked the USS Maddox (though, curiously didn't attempt to damage the ship). Anyhow, Scoop Jackson asked for and got a "Gulf of Tonkin Resolution" giving the President a wide array of powers in Vietnam. Most of Scoop's Advisors, even the technocrat Bundy expected

Why didn't Elizabeth Warren perform better in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries?

I would like to preface this by mentioning that I am not an American.

However, it seems like Elizabeth Warren seems to have strong advantages over some other Democratic Party candidates:

  • Doesn't propose an untested and radical overhaul of the economy (unlike Andrew Yang)
  • Doesn't have a record of praising the USSR (unlike Bernie Sanders)
  • Doesn't have sexual harassment allegations (unlike Joe Biden and Michael Bloomberg)
  • Isn't a denialist of chemical weapons attacks (unlike Tulsi Gabbard)
  • Hasn't suffered a heart attack on the campaign trail (unlike Bernie Sanders)
  • Isn't suspected of having dementia (unlike Joe Biden)

The only major disadvantage I can see that Warren has compared to some other candidates is that she never served in the military.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Elizabeth Warren seems to be between Biden and Sanders in terms of political positions. How hasn't this played to her advantage?

I have encountered Warren supporters on Reddit who assert that she failed to get the nomination because "America isn't ready for a female president", but is the answer really that simple?
