Hello!

I am helping out a small company (12 users in the main site + another 6-10 (varies) in two different satellite offices) with their IT setup.

The current setup is pretty wild:

• One Windows 7 Home Premium machine acting as file-server.
• Folders are shared via Windows Share,
• All employees have a local user account on the server (I know, I know...)) and access it via LAN.
• Offsite users use VPN.

How to set this is up better?

• I was thinking of setting the new machine with Windows 2019 Server Essentials acting as domain controller and file server. Good, bad?
• The downside of the having a dedicated Win Server is the licence cost. 550 Dollar will be hard to argue
• Cloud storage is not really an option as the internet connection at the site can be spotty.
• Any other solution?

Edit: Regarding hardware: We have a brand new 16 GB RAM, Ryzen 2700 PC which is earmarked for server duties.

Hello, I have a computer I use as my home server for three years now. First I used XigmaNAS, then Ubuntu 18.04 and now I want to use Windows, because it doesn't cover all my needs.My specs:

• Intel Pentium G3260 3.30GHz
• ASUS H81M-K motherboard
• 8GB Kingston Hyperx Fury Red 1600mhz (2x4GB)
• 1x Seagate Barracuda Green 1.5 TB (ST1500DL003)
• 1x Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB (ST2000DL003)
• 1X Seagate IronWolf 4TB (ST4000VN008) Main drive
• Gigabit Ethernet between PCs and 100mb to my TVs
• FTTH connection 300mb/s down / 150mb/s up

The applications I use on this computer, currently running on Ubuntu are:

• qBittorent
• Sonar/jacket
• Plex
• Pi-hole
• OpenVPN server
• SMB shares
• (edit) VNC server
• Software Defined Radio(SDR) capture, decoding and streaming

So, explaining everything: I use this server to download games, movies and tv shows from my favorite sources using qBitorrent/Sonar/Jacket, then use Plex to watch them on my bedroom TV, my living room TV or my phone (locally, I rarely use it outside my network, and never use encoding, I have good internet speeds and I can stream outside my network at 1080 if the bitrate is not insanely high)(currently: works great | hypothetical windows set up: all can be done on windows)

Pi-hole: I use pi-hole to block ads on my network, I'm using my 2 raspberry Pi on other projects, so that's why I installed it on my home server. On windows I could use docker to run pi-hole, or a tiny VM, because I don't have resources to spare.(currently: works great | hypothetical windows set up: I'll have to setup docker)

VPN server: I still want to continue using OpenVPN as the VPN server, I watched some tutorials and I think it will work without a problem after setting up all the certificates and stuff. I use the VPN to connect to my home network when I'm not home.(currently: works great | hypothetical windows set up: I'll have to setup everything again)

SMB shares: So with this current set up

I'm looking to switch my HP N40L home server away from Windows Server. I initially chose to use Windows Server when I bought the hardware mostly due to familiarity with Microsoft's ecosystem - and have stuck with it since.

I'm thinking that switching over to linux (Ubuntu Server seems the obvious candidate) would probably suit this machine better, as it's primarily used for for:

• Network file sharing (SMB and NFS)
• Sonarr and Radarr
• Jackett
• SABnzbd
• qBittorent (with OpenVPN)
• Plex server

A big part of the reason for change is I'd lke to use my VPN exclusively for qBittorent, and so far haven't had much luck in unbinding my systemwide OpenVPN connection in Windows Server.

If anybody is able to provide any information/advice on where to start, I'd love to hear from you 🙂

Based on what I've read her over the past week or so, I'm not 100% sure this is the right place for this. So please feel free to point me somewhere else.

Back in 2011 I built a Windows Home Server (2011) machine mostly as central storage for my house but also for it's automated backups of clients and my general familiarity with Windows. I quickly "upgraded" it to run SABNZB and Sickbeard (and eventually Sonarr). It's been working perfectly for 9 years but I think one of the hard drives is finally failing. Here is the hardware I could still find (shocked these links are still live):

I couldn't find the memory or hd's but I think there's 16gb in there and about 6TB total over 4 1.5TB "green" WD drives.

So my questions are:

- Am I maxed at 2TB drives if I replace some/all? I searched all over the place for that old chipset and couldn't find an answer. I thought it was a 64bit OS but maybe that doesn't matter.

- Am I really rolling the dice by continuing to run the old processor and motherboard?

I don't think I'll ever use this server for anything much beyond what I'm currently using it for (central storage, usenet, sonar-type apps) so I'm afraid most of what you guys discuss here is overkill. Plus I'm not familiar with Linux at any more than a passing level. So if I did rebuild from scratch I'd likely be looking to do something windows-based or at least windows friendly again. Ultimately I'd like something that fits in the space of the case above that can handle at least 20TB of storage (those 4k, HDR rips are brutal!) and maybe not be hot-swappable but at least easy to replace failing drives. I don't really have a budget but wouldn't want to spend more than $1000-$1500 or so.

I'm sure I haven't provided all the info you guys would need to help me here so please let me know what I've missed.
