A list of puns related to "Windows Home Server 2011"
Based on what I've read her over the past week or so, I'm not 100% sure this is the right place for this. So please feel free to point me somewhere else.
Back in 2011 I built a Windows Home Server (2011) machine mostly as central storage for my house but also for it's automated backups of clients and my general familiarity with Windows. I quickly "upgraded" it to run SABNZB and Sickbeard (and eventually Sonarr). It's been working perfectly for 9 years but I think one of the hard drives is finally failing. Here is the hardware I could still find (shocked these links are still live):
MB: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TJWI7Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Proc: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004P8FBFC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Case: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16811112265?Item=N82E16811112265
I couldn't find the memory or hd's but I think there's 16gb in there and about 6TB total over 4 1.5TB "green" WD drives.
So my questions are:
- Am I maxed at 2TB drives if I replace some/all? I searched all over the place for that old chipset and couldn't find an answer. I thought it was a 64bit OS but maybe that doesn't matter.
- Am I really rolling the dice by continuing to run the old processor and motherboard?
I don't think I'll ever use this server for anything much beyond what I'm currently using it for (central storage, usenet, sonar-type apps) so I'm afraid most of what you guys discuss here is overkill. Plus I'm not familiar with Linux at any more than a passing level. So if I did rebuild from scratch I'd likely be looking to do something windows-based or at least windows friendly again. Ultimately I'd like something that fits in the space of the case above that can handle at least 20TB of storage (those 4k, HDR rips are brutal!) and maybe not be hot-swappable but at least easy to replace failing drives. I don't really have a budget but wouldn't want to spend more than $1000-$1500 or so.
I'm sure I haven't provided all the info you guys would need to help me here so please let me know what I've missed.
Thank you in advance for any help!
I have a nice little HP ProLiant Microserver N40L with Windows Home Server 2011 installed on it. It currently does this:
Has a two-disk 3tb RAID 1 array. This is our "Storage" logical drive.
Has a single 3tb HD for backup purposes. The contents of the array are copied here once a week, at 11pm on Sunday into Monday morning. I use a commercial program called SyncBackPro for this because I used it at a previous job and it was very easy to use.
Has a couple shared folders so my wife and I can easily access files from our respective computers and devices.
WHS 2011 is all borked up (Windows Update is broken and the service is actually somehow missing) and I don't feel like fixing it. I'm pretty comfortable with Linux and command lines so I'm thinking of switching to Ubuntu Server. Not worried about the shared folders part because I've set up Samba before.
I am concerned about working with RAID in Linux though as I do not have much experience there, as well as having some other concerns. So I have some questions:
I remember using Ubuntu Server years ago and IIRC it doesn't install a GUI by default. Did that change at all? I'd like to use a GUI as much as possible since I'm not a huge fan of editing .conf files. I do it when I have to but I'd rather have something easier. :P
So my RAID array is easily set up in the BIOS, but from the OS I use a utility called AMD RaidXpert. Is there a Linux equivalent, or do most distros have a similar utility built in?
Does the file system of the RAID array matter? Should I stick with NTFS for compatibility's sake or is there something else I should use? I'm primarily going to be sharing files with Windows PCs, but also a couple Raspberry Pi systems.
What is a good Linux based equivalent of SyncBackPro? All I really want is a backup program with a fairly easy to use GUI, scheduled backups, and the ability to perform differential backups.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.
EDIT: Ok ok, I'll use a damn shell lol. I'm pretty comfortable with one actually, I just really didn't want to have to figure out cron and rsync, but some of the comments here are swaying me.
Now that I think about it this machine does have an old low powered AMD Turion CPU, I should probably go without a GUI just to keep things speedy.
Keep the good suggestions coming, I'm starting to have a good feeling about switching.
EDIT 2: Gonna take down the server and install Ubuntu this weekend. Already got a plan for Samba, rsync an
... keep reading on reddit β‘Yes at this point it's outdated, but it still fulfills my two minimum requirements:
Automated nightly backups of my PCs with retention
Remote shared folder (same exact shared folders as on the local network) access through a web browser
I'm considering upgrading to Windows Server 2016 or 2019 (I have a license for each) and having been out of the loop on this for at least 5 years I am wondering what software people are using these days to mimic similar functionality. I would also like to be able to have my own private "Google Drive/Docs" sort of thing where I can remotely edit simple Word/Excel files through a web browser and select certain ones to share publicly through a dynamically generated link. Perhaps NextCloud?
Sorry, I'm not interested in switching to Linux. Any recommendations on software to accomplish this on a Windows Server 2016/2019 box?
I have a Win 10 which is primarily used for my cams recordings and synced files from my WHS11 (Dell T20). Do you have any suggestions for WHS11 replacements? I have Windows Server 2012 essentials through dreamspark but I don't want to join workstations to a domain at home and skipping the domain would break things up.
I plan on re-using an owned hard drive to install the OS and Plex. I'll need to purchase a 2nd hard drive for media storage. It seems that most users here are suggesting WD Green (3 TB). Is there a different hard drive I should be looking at, or will the WD Green work to stream the media without issue?
I'm considering getting myself a little home server for movies and torrenting. I'm not too sure how the whole thing works but all I want it to do is let me access movies/files from anywhere on the network and also have uTorrent downloads running pretty much 24/7. Is this possible with WHS2011? Thanks a lot for any help and advice!

The WHS Connector stopped working after updating to 10061. Uninstalled it and can't reinstall. Anyone have any experience with this?
In case anyone in this sub ever decides to update their home server/HTPC, under no circumstances should you ever, EVER install Windows Home Server 2011 as the OS.
At the moment, I am blinded by my anger towards this steaming pile of code. I cannot count the number of times it suddenly decided that it wasn't Genuine Microsoft software, was incompatible with a driver, or botched a backup. It's like Microsoft's cruel joke to computer enthusiasts. Not to mention that it had the shortest "support" window and was forgotten about by Microsoft the following year!
I know that there's a general understanding now that WHS 2011 should be avoided like the plague, but those of you who remained wary, count yourselves lucky. This OS's only saving grace is that it runs Plex without complaint (but that credit is probably due entirely to Plex). However, since the OS thinks it is now not a Geniune product, nothing works. Thanks, Microsoft.
I want to be able to trigger a shutdown on my Windows Home Server 2011 machine via clicking a button on a web application that's running on the server. The server never seems to shutdown for me.
When I test this all locally it works (my dev machine is a Windows 7 machine)
Here's the code I'm using:
Process proc = new Process()
proc.StartInfo.FileName = Path.Combine(Environment.SystemDirectory, "shutdown.exe");
proc.StartInfo.Arguments = "-s -t 0";
proc.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
proc.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;
proc.Start();
Hi there,
I think I have quite a big task here where I have absolutely no clue how to achieve it...
Short version:
Wake my home server and stream Audio/Video to XBMC on my Nexus 10 and keep the server only awake when XBMC is actually running on the tablet.
A little bit more detailed:
I have Windows Home Server 2011 running on a HP N40L. The server wakes up when any of my Windows clients my network is active (WOL) and shuts down if no client is present/other criteria is met (see below) for 10 minutes. So I can assure to save power when I don't need the server. All this is done with "Lights Out" (http://www.homeserversoftware.com/lo2011.html) and the according client package for my workstations. But there is no client for Android (yet).
I have different criterias that I can activate in Lights Out to keep the server running. When none of the selected are met, the server will shut down:
Online Windows Client in the network (done with an agent)
Online IP address in the network
LAN utilization on the server in min. KB/s
Running process (.EXE-file) on the server
Active connections to the web interface
What I could do is a WOL to the server from my Nexus 10 and monitor in Lights Out if the tablet is connected to Wifi and keep the server awake as long as the tablet is connected. But then the server won't shut down - of course, because I keep my Wifi switched on on the tablet all the time. So, this is no real solution. The only useful criteria in this case seems to be the "Running process" thing.
And that's the moment where Tasker shows up on the stage: Is there any way to start a process (any .exe-file; e.g. calc.exe) on a remote machine? And kill it when a Android app is closed?
My (simplified and theoretical) plan is to create a Tasker profile that does
Task 1: (Tasker widget on the home screen)
Task 2: (When XBMC is NOT running (=recently closed) AND variable "XBMC" is "1")
So, basically most of the things are absolutely clear (I use tasker since 2010/11), I'm just struggeling with point 3) in Task 1 and point 1) in Task 2. Any ideas?
I read something about Eventghost (I think , that seems to be something like Tasker for the Windows plattform). But didn't use it yet. So I have
... keep reading on reddit β‘I realized that my copy of WHS requires authentication (cough), and I have 13 days to figure it out. In lieu of a crack, I really wouldn't mind paying the $60ish dollars for a WHS 2011 key. The thing is, I just can't find anywhere to buy one. I think I read something about the sale of new keys ending as of 2014, but I hoped I could still find somewhere to buy a new one regardless.
Thanks!
Hi /r/24hoursupport,
I have some Questions regarding the Windows Home Server 2011.
What exactly does the Client Connector do? What are the benefits if I install the WHS Connector on my Clients. All I want to do is streaming media (See second question) and provide some network shares.
If I enable the Media Sharing / Media Server option (dont know the exact name) for streaming media to my Tv (via DLNA) or my XBox can I add any folder to the share or are they presets / specific folders (e.g. Pictures, Movies, Music)?
I'm looking up information and I think it may be a great solution for me, but I'm having some information overload. thought maybe some of you might be able to give me some tips and answer some questions I have.
I'm willing to consider almost any alternatives (although I understand this is r/Windows). Anything that I say that I want is really just based on information I already know and that I think I want. If there is a piece of hardware or software that is better for my situation, please let me know.
CURRENT SITUATION
Currently, I have 6 users on a desktop running Windows 7 (me, mrs, kid, kid, kid, kid)
I have a very large library of mp3s that I want to share with every other user, but I want to manage tags and album art.
I have lots of videos that I stream over LAN to original Xbox running XBMC to watch on our TV.
We all have all of our files/docs on this computer on 3 HDD (2 1TB and one 250GB). I hate having my docs (very important) on the same system my kids are playing flash games on.
I backup everything using Carbonite.
I have a laptop and connect to the home desktop (above) via Logmein as I travel or through the LAN. I have remote access to uTorrent and Subsonic (killer media server) via http://www.no-ip.com/. No one else touches my laptop except to play Civ V with someone on the desktop.
NEED:
This setup (above) works great for us in many ways. but I need to add computers and think this is a great time to move to a server.
I'd love to replace my original Xbox with a tiny media box to take better advantage of my HD TV and I've been hammering that Xbox for all these years and surely it can't last forever.
I need to add a second computer to our network because one physical computer isn't enough especially during summer when kids are out of school. Actually each year some or all of my kids are home educated and we need at least one more computer just for that.
I need everyone to be able to have their own "space" for their documents.
I need everyone to have access to programs.
QUESTIONS
I vaguely grasp some aspects of how a server works and the terminology, but I feel like things are foggy. For example, I've heard of "domain" and "workgroup" but I don't understand what this means for me in setting up a home server. Can someone talk to me like I'm a third grader and tell me how those terms apply to networks in general and specifically to WHS 2011?
Right now, I download videos via uTorrent and the files are in a shared file
... keep reading on reddit β‘The modem is a westell 7500 the ports forwarded are 443,80,4125,and 3389. The server setup is windows home server 2011.
Just cleaned out the closet and there were enough parts over to a new, though not so strong home server built from old parts
I've taken the decision to throw Windows on this one but I am not sure about the version yet. The specs are not that good, so I want something with a low memory footprint, etc.
What I am asking about is currently what one trades with in terms of Microsoft server: does the new version requires more juice? if not I would rather go with a newer version, but if not, an older one would be fine as well. Tried to Google but couldn't really find a definitive answer (have all my other servers on NIX and BSD)
Usage:
Web server (probably XAMPP)
Minecraft Server
Minor Virtualization (very small scale, more for the fun of than actual production)
Thank you guys!

I've never used Playon Cloud or it's apps. I'm going to start trying out the Android app to interface with my Home server desktop PC. However, my tablet is a windows tablet. In the past I've just installed Desktop on that tablet and copy and pasted any videos I wanted to that tablet so I could have ad skip. Will the playon cloud downloader allow me to download from my Home server like the Cloud Android app currently does?
