You are elected as President of the United Federation of Planets. What changes do you make to the Federation and Starfleet?

It is the late 24th century and you are elected as President of the Federation. What changes that you promised during your election campaign do you make?

The United Federation of Planets is Socialist; They Are a Centrally Planned, Moneyless, Free, Democratic Society. That is Socialist.

So I've been seeing a lot of the people on this subreddit go about and laugh at the notion that Star Trek is Socialist despite decades, and I definitely mean, decades of proof otherwise.

>The Federation has no Money

This one should be very clear to anyone who's watched Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Next Generation as well, but it was plainly spelled out in DS9 that the Federation doesn't use currency whatsoever within the bounds of the Federation. The only modicum of exchange they have is credits they use to barter with foreign powers, and those within the Federation who deal in exchange.

>The Federation is a Centrally Planned Economy

While this looks very different from our modern economy, the Federation owns every science station, every space station, funds every colonization effort, every hospital, provides food, etc... They are, by all accounts, a centrally planned economy with distinct freedoms given to their individual planets and peoples.

>The Federation's Freedoms Are Not Proof Against Socialism

For those of you who doesn't actually study polisci, Socialism is an economic model, one which can be paired with any system of governance, and that includes Democratic ones-as we see exist in the Federation. The sort of totalitarian nightmares that exist under China and the Soviet Union aren't the only means by which Socialism is practiced, and one can gesture towards numerous societies in both the past and present, including Monarchies, Theocracies, Tribal Cultures, and even modern Democracies that all varied on the scale of Socialist.

The people of the Federation are free because of Democracy, they are Democratic Socialists.

>The people own the means of production

Under Socialism, the people own the means of production. The Federation, being Democratically Socialist, would mean that the workers own the means of production via elections which we never learn much about, but we know there are presidents and elections. Thus, since the government runs everything (as laid out before), and the government is voted in by the people, they are representatives of the people who own the means of production.

>"The Federation isn't Socialist, it's just Post-Scarcity"

I've seen this argument a few times and while it is correct in that the Federation is a post-scarcity society, to say the Federation isn't socialist by this metric is like saying Mercantilism and Capitalism are two totally different things. They are similar enough that we gr

Just a reminder: The United Federation of Planets is neither Socialist nor Communist.

Note: This post is a response to the recent "Star Trek is socialist" post.

Someone in those comments pointed out, correctly, that declaring Star Trek this or that is actually nonsense because its a TV show created by writers.

This is totally correct.

But I had a response about what we can and cannot say about a society that would have the material realities we see in Star Trek. I'm reposting most of that comment here:

"....we can make some inferences on what a society would be like that had access to matter replicators, virtually free energy, powerful AI & robotics labor, and the ability to travel from star to star.

The writers of Star Trek has, for decades, ranged from excellent, thoughtful people with a lot of diverse ideas to, as is the case for the last few years, talentless, low-bar activists who have chiefly used the writers room as a “social agenda first/story second” platform from which to honk on mightily about their own perspective on the world…specifically the undereducated, latte sipping California 20 something moron who truly believes they live in a hopelessly oppressive society that needs to be overthrown…and their just the ones to do it.

These morons look at Star Trek and see a society that can only exist in terms they are familiar with: if there’s no money and everybody is free and happy to do whatever they want, it MUST be a communist Utopia.

Except anyone who has paid the slightest bit of attention to decades of Trek…and is aware of the material elements of the fictional society that has been reinforced over and over again…would understand that there’s no “centrally planned” economy in the Federation. There’s no government/socialist distribution of good and services. People make their own choices and enjoy extreme freedom because having a replicator and a fusion reactor in your house is essentially free. A robot that cleans and repairs things around the house is also essentially free. There’s no point of hoarding, or buying, or selling, or cornering a market…and certainly no purpose in a government doing these things because it costs nothing to produce them. The federation is a zero marginal cost society.

Those material realities …and the ability to move from world to world…would have a profound effect on what people grow to value. Status, achievement, advancement…reputation and

United Federation of Planets vs the Gem Homeworld.

This is the UFP during the 23rd Century (DISC,TOS/TAS and the original movies).

To set the stage for this battle, the Gems are going to be the ones who started this war in the first place, Federation is on the defensive, especially since negotiating with the Diamonds is impossible due to their xenophobia towards all organic life and that the Gems have killed every UFP ambassador and diplomat sent to Homeworld. Diplomacy is out of the picture since Gems don't want to listen to a single word uttered from the mouth of a filthy organic.

Other acts of aggressions include unprovoked attacks on civillian ships and colonies (they have no distinction between civillian and military in their society) and the colonization of planets already in the jurisdiction and territory of the Federation. They disregard the authority and presence of the Federation because they're all organics and that such disgusting and inferior beings are not worth respecting or even recognizing. Any treaty or accords between them and the Federation would be frequently violated by the Gems since they won't like Organics telling them what to do.

These acts of aggression won't just be limited to the UF but also others such as the Romulans and Klingons.

The battle here is set in sector 001 (Sol System) and involves the Federation's defense of Earth against homeworld forces attempting to conquer the Federation by destroying the capital world, but it's also as a form of vengeance from their loss during the rebellion.

So in a battle for Earth, who would win? Would phasers and photon torpedoes even put a dent on gem ships or can the Gems refract phasers.

What are the shortcomings of the United Federation of Planets?

We all know that the federation was created as a utopia as a theoretically perfect government, but many times perfection is hard and all governments have problems or things that they do not handle well.

What would be the major problems of the UFP for you?

United Federation of Planets Flag for house

Hi All,

My SO is a huge trekkie and I wanted to get him a United Federation of Planets Flag for the house. I've seen some on Amazon but they are one sided and generally poorly rated.

Is there some place online where i can buy a well-made United Federation of Planets flag?

Thanks!
