So unsure how many people there are in this sub that are using thin clients with Citrix desktops. We are looking at replacing our fleet of devices with another product and wouldn't mind hearing from anyone else as to what they're using. Currently we are using HP desktop and laptop thin clients. They work just fine. However once they leave our site, no remote management. That's hurt us recently. I've never liked it. We use the HP Device Manager onsite to image them and push any updates locally, however.
Of course with how bad the supply chain is right now, it's hard to actually find anything, but we are actively looking in case we can find some or get some testing models, etc. We would require something that has remote management allowed. Dell has a solution that they showed us a year back or so and we liked it, but then they never sent us any test devices and the idea kind of just faded away. HP apparently is coming out with a cloud remote management software, but it's not available yet and noone can tell us when it will be. Lastly there is this company called 10zig and apparently they're pretty good to work with and seems to check all the boxes for us. CDW hooked us up with a local company that is currently using them and hopefully they can inform us as well. Anyone use them?
Dell is suggesting me to go for poweredge t440 for ~$2270 (converted from INR).
Specs:-
CPU: Intel xeon silver 4208 (8c/16t)
RAM: 16gb x2 RDIMM DDR4 2400MHz
OS drive: 240gb x2 ssd (raid 1)
Storage dive: 500gb x4 hdd (raid 10)
PSU: 450W 80+ gold
The Problem with this build is that it is overpriced as f***, so i was thinking that i should make a "server" out of consumer grade hardware, but I'm having a bit of confusion and a bit of fear using consumer grade hardware for server use. Configuration for my system is:
CPU: Ryzen 9 5950x (16c/32t)
GPU: Radeon HD 7300 (just for video out to config the system)
MoBo: Asus Strix ROG B550-F gaming mobo (non-wifi)
RAM: 16gb x4 Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz CL16 (I'm looking for unregistered ecc memory, it's very difficult to find ecc in india. will replace it as soon as i find it)
OS drive: 500gb x2 WD Blue SN550 (raid 1)
Storage drive: 4tb x3 Seagate IronWolf NAS drive (raid 5)
PSU: Asus ROG Strix 850W 80+ Gold
CPU cooler: Deepcool assassin 3
Cabinet: Corsair 750D (for adding more drive bays in the future)
this System will run me ~$2400
OS will be Windows server 2019. I need to know that, should i go with the DELL system or should i build my own? Is there any downside of using consumer hardware as server?
NOTE: Dell representative told me that i should always use dell HDDs/SSDs for maximum compatibility and to maintain the warranty of the system but that's not the problem, the real problem is the price of dell branded HDD (which are actually WD Red Plus drives). WD Red plus will cost me ~$200 for 4tb where as the same drive will cost me a whopping ~$600 from dell.
I want to connect my computer to my 4K TV over the network with a thin client. Both the host and client sides will be running Linux, probably using VNC on Fedora.
I have a 2010 era Core 2 Duo PC with some kind of mid to low range dedicated GPU from the same year, and is not even new/high end enough to have a single USB 3.0 port. It's currently collecting dust in storage and I thought this could be a way to get some use out of it.
How well would the PC in question perform as a 4K thin client? As in, would there be enough CPU power, and will the GPU's HDMI port be able to output that high resolution? Do thin clients rely on the GPU much? Because if I can get away with using the Core 2 Duo onboard graphics, that would be preferred for power consumption reasons.
Finally, would I be able to get away with using a 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter to get the data over? Would that have enough bandwidth for a local 4K stream? My computers on Wi-Fi seem to have no problems watching 4K streams on YouTube, so this should work fine, right?
Hallo Gemeinde,
I am configuring MFA on my RDS 2019 environment using the Azure NPS extension. I have it all working but when I have someone connect using an HP Thin Client running the ThinPro OS they get the MFA prompt but the session never loads. When I looked at the logs on the GW I see where it says that the user met resource authorization policy requirements and was therefore authorized to connect to the CB.
Once I changed the connection Request Policy on the GW back to not use the MFA the thin client was able to connect without issues. Any ideas?
I canβt access cmd or control panel. My coach just got a new monitor and the resolution is wrong. Itβs stretched and it bugs me. Anyone know off top how to change the resolution?
Hey Everyone,
I am still trying to clean out my closet of stuff.
1 2 iPad 4 16gb WiFi Black iPads. They are all in good shape. But they do show some signs of wear from being used and asset tags removed. The entire time they were used they have had cases. All have been wiped and are not activation locked.

Hi,
We have a for us quite new thin client setup running. Consisting of Dell Wyse 5070 clients manage by dell's management suite.
The system works fine for normal users but we have one department that has some special requirements.
These being a usb document scanner and webcam.
Although usb redirection and remote fx is enabled in the management software, no usb connections can be redirected apart from the usual mouse and keyboard.
The actual thin client can work perfectly fine with the devices, the scanner has its own driver installed, and can be seen by the system, the webcam automatically installs the generic Windows driver and works as well (vlc can get a feed for microphone and video without a problem)
I have tested the rdp settings that are used in kiosk mode and the local recources are all ticked for redirection, i tried to change the group policy settings for host and client because remotefx and av redirection were disabled by default in Windows but no luck. I am not ashamed to admit that this is way out of my field.
The webcam can be seen as device in teams but i can't get a feed on the remote machine same for microphone. The scanner is not seen by the system at all.
Does anyone have suggestions?
We have about 90 10zig thin clients, is there anyway to display the thin client inside the RDS Session.
This is so when the user rings support we know which thin client to connect to.
Cheers
I'm in need of recommendations for a quad-port low profile card that works with the HP T730 AMD APU.
I bought a Sun 375-3481-01 Intel Pro/1000PT PCI-e Quad Port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter LP, but apparently I've run into the FreeBSD bug where there is a compatibility issue with these types of Intel chipset cards. Kernel panic and hard-lock, pfSense 2.5.2. Card and system seem fine in Windows 10, I iperf'ed each port in Windows and everything was as expected, 940-950'ish mbit/sec throughput.
Are there other Intel-based chipset gigabit cards that do work with the AMD APU, or if not then a decent reliable Broadcom gigabit card?
I wanted this box to replace an older, higher wattage box currently in production, plus I wanted to go from dual to quad so I can start to dabble in VLANs.
Thanks in advance.
We use a basic windows 10 computer (Azulle Byte 4) for our users to connect to their Vmware Horizon sessions. We're finding that the processing power on the local device has a significant impact on the session itself. Although it works we'll we find it works better when connecting from a more powerful device.
For example if you're doing a Teams video chat the performance is better when i'm doing from my horizon session on a powerful laptop than inside the session from this Byte4 computer.
Easy answer is to get a more powerful thin client but... Anyone know if there are settings on the local computer i can change to optimize my Horizon session?
Hey guys,
I got 5 DELL Wyse 3040 Thin Clients from work and would like to run them in a fun little Kubernetes Cluster. As each client comes with the own 12V PSU, this would cause major cable clutter. Is there a better way to power them? Preferably from one power source.
Thank you.
hello.
i have hp thin client t530 and want upgrade to windows 10 ltsc. i download image from thinupdate tool and boot in flesh but when i am trying install it's writing ( Error: "The system does not have a License for the Image OS")
EDIT: Found the answer. The trick is to hold down the PWCLR button while powering up the system. It'll show a text mode screen indicating the passwords have been disabled. You can then power off, release the button and then you'll have a clear BIOS.
It's a long shot, but figured perhaps someone else on here has played with one of these.
Got a couple of used Wyse 3040 thin clients. They're basically the same specs as an Atomic Pi (same CPU, RAM, either same or half of the EMMC storage, but in a nice enclosure). Turns out (this seems to happen a lot with used thin clients) they're locked with a BIOS password. I can get into the BIOS but I can't change any settings, thus I can't boot from a USB to install a different OS.
There's a button near the battery on the board labeled PWCLR. On another forum, someone suggested this button should be able to reset the BIOS password. However, this doesn't work. I tried pressing it, holding it down for 30 seconds both with and without the battery installed, and pressing it over and over. Nor does pulling the battery and waiting an hour (time is reset to 2019 but admin password is still in place).
Note that this is not the general BIOS access password. Apparently there is a default password "Fireport" that is used on many Wyse devices, but the previous owner of this device was obviously security conscious (good for them, honestly) and changed all of the BIOS passwords. Like I said, I'm able to view the BIOS settings but I can't edit any of them.
Are these lost causes? Starting to think buying any of these used thin clients is just a bad idea, even though they're honestly very useful little machines when they're not locked down.
Need to buy a thin client or optiplex kinda device for pfsense setup. Please help
Hi,
I've recently taken over one of our offices as a admin. They have a very antiquated approach to everything IT. Most of the work is done by remotely accessing a Windows 10 desktop PC which has some sort of illegal software to allow ten or more sessions. The users have weak laptops which struggle to run outlook let alone other applications.
As i've already been told, the plan is to update this server either to a cloud instance where we already have other servers running or upgrade the existing physical server. My question is what software does this server need to allow multiple remote connections, where users could employ their laptops as thin clients, running nothing more than a VPN connection and maybe Skype. And all the other apps would reside on the remote server. This would most likely consist of the Office Suite (including Outlook for email) and PowerBI Development.
Thanks.
I've got an HP T520 thin-client lying around which I'm thinking of re-purposing as a Minecraft server as a fun project. Its running an AMD GX-212JC (dual-core) at 1.2 Ghz, 4GB RAM and Samsung 128 GB M.2 SATA SSD running Lubuntu. I doubt there would ever be more than 16 active sessions.
Hey guys. I made an ilambda tutorial, which I demo'd at emacsconf. You just need an OpenAI key to try this out, for which there is no waitlist.
You can run it without the full bloat of pen.el. I'm going to try to put this into melpa soon!
This is what I've spent the last day on. This is a library that lets you interface with language models through programming. It separates the peas and carrots of real and imaginary, through lisp function and macro syntax.
https://semiosis.github.io/posts/ilambda-tutorial/
We have about a dozen of these that we no longer need in the lab. We can ship them via FedEx 2-day anywhere in the US for $15. We are going to limit these to one per person and if you're super poor or have a good reason, maybe we'll even eat the shipping for you.
Post below with interest and what you'd like the system for, we will PM some of our favorite use cases to coordinate shipping. Please do not PM and chat us. We want to see the stories in the replies.
Each of these has a 32GB M.2 SATA SSD inside. They're in very good condition. These are super for multi-monitor rigs, nice monitoring box. 4x Display port, 4x USB, 2x serial, even a parallel port for all that dot-matrix printing you do.

EDIT
This is not a free for all. Like a box of puppies, we want to make sure these are going to good homes and not being resold on eBay. If we wanted to, we could sell these for a few hundo a pop. We instead want to enable this community. Everyone PM-ing their address and payment details are going to be ignored. Only post replies with details on your homelab hopes and dreams will be considered.
EDIT 2
We've got many of these claimed and four shipped. I'll pick this up again in the morning after we confirm everyone who's won so far.
Edit 3
This is complete. Back soon with some SAS HDDs probably and maybe even a DL380 ;)
