A man in his 50's has been charged with the murder of 17 year old Birgitte Tengs in 1995, and the same man is also now a suspect in the murder of 20 year old Tina Jรธrgensen in 2000. The man has earlier been questioned in connection to both murders. According to VG (a Norwegian news site), suspicion had already fallen on the man a few days after the murder of Birgitte Tengs due to him having assaulted a woman a few years earlier. The reason for his arrest seems to be "results from technical evidence". Dagbladet (another news website) reports that there has been found hair. He had been living in the town where Tina Jรธrgensen had been murdered at the time of that murder, and this seems to be a big reason suspicion has fallen on him in connection to that murder. He is currently denying all involvement.
Update 1: According to VG, the suspect has a long history of criminal conduct going back to the 90s. In 2005 he was convicted of having broken into the homes of two women, the first in 2003, and the second in 2004, where he stole clothing, shoes and photos belonging to the women. He apparently had driven one of the women home from Stavanger city center, and the other woman he had targeted after he saw her in a magazine. He also has other convictions for stealing shoes from other women between 2001 and 2004.
A quick background on both murders:
Birgitte Tengs was found raped and murdered on the morning of 6th of May 1995, in Kopervik, on Karmรธy in Norway, by a local farmer looking for some of his missing sheep. The attack happened sometime between 00:30 and 09:00, as she had gotten a ride from the city center around 23:40. Almost 2 years later, on February 8th 1997, her cousin became a suspect. He initially denied everything, then admitted to the rape and murder, before retracting his confession soon after, citing long and complicated interrogations as the reason for his false confession. He is not the man currently being charged.
Tina Jรธrgensen disappeared on the 24th of September 2000 in Stavanger. One month later she was found by Bore Church in Jรฆren. On the 16th of September 2015 a 36 year old man, and 3 others was suspected of the murder. They were all released on the 9th of October 2015. I have no idea if any of these are the man now being suspected.
