I know we aren’t supposed to name drop but I just wanted to talk about how that one girl from squidgame (you know who) has been triggering me for ages and now I watched an interview where the actress said her favorite book is the vegetarian and all my alarm bells went off 🙃

I know that the anime stopped years ago, but I don't know about the manga.

For a game that is supposed to be about equality, it seems near if not completely impossible for a woman to win at Squid Game, at least in the edition of the game that we see in the show.

Lets say that a girl manages to pass through the night fights and tug of war (which in on themselves are already very male favored) and get to the very end of the games. How then are they supposed to get through the titular game, where victory is literally determined by who can shove the other out of a line or beat each other to death through brute force? The chances of a girl winning seem to be absolutely null to none, regardless of how ruthless they may be, the physical difference just seems to be too much.

I am starting to think that the only reason they gave the three remaining participants knives was because Sae was between them, to level the playing field a little bit, and if she wasn’t there they wouldn’t have been given knives at all. But even with a knife, the female-male difference to me just seems too large to ignore and plays too much of a role. So pray tell, what were the organizers planning with that last game?

An Argentinian youtuber, made a Yansim in Squid Game video, and that gave me the idea to replicate it and expand it with all Yansim girls that both Ryoba and Ayano met.

So first off, the Squid Games aren’t fair and were never meant to be. (Full season spoilers ahead)

The Front Man spoke of “the pure ideology of this world” where “here you are all equal, with equal opportunity and no discrimination,” but it was never actually true. He’s speaking as the ‘villain’ of the story and is certainly more interested in what’s fair for his gambling guests than the players themselves (the guests didn’t know about the doctor's advantage, after all).

Even if we can believe the first two (official) games qualify as “equal opportunity” games, the lie is exposed once we factor in the sanctioned night riot. A fight like that will almost always come down to the physically strong conquering the physically weak—which we see repeated in the game of tug of war, and the gift of steak knives the night before the final game.

Given the games are designed for both men and women, this is going to leave women in the lurch the great majority of the time. Bringing us to the theme of gender inequality.

No matter how many times Gi-hun suggests that they might end up playing a game where women will have the advantage, they never actually do. Sang-woo tries to build a team without adding women and it turns out that was the right call. Min-hyeo uses flirting and sexuality to build alliances as she must know she can’t win on strength...and it doesn’t work so well. Sae-byeok gets unfairly injured by a literal shard of glass.

In the first episode, Gi-hun tells his daughter, “a lot of women join the military too these days. Your future is a world where men and women are equal.” That second bit struck me on rewatch, even if he was mostly trying to cover for the inappropriate gift. I wonder if this was a future that became harder to believe in, and if that further contributed to his disillusionment after the games and/or his decision to go back and cause trouble.

What do you think? Do women stand a chance of winning the games? Are there other instances of the theme of gender inequality? Do you think the Squidders ever get to play gonggi or elastics?
