A list of puns related to "Spanish Netherlands"
Silly question but I just saw a post asking why German women aren't associated with beauty. So I had to ask being a fan of Isabel Adjani (half-German) and moreso because my fav movie star Audrey Hepburn is half Dutch.
Its not just Audrey but there are so many goodlooking Dutch celebs lke Famke Janssen.
If we count the fact the Afrikaners of South Africa are mostly Dutch descent, South Africa has won Mss World and Miss Unverse a couple of times.
So why aren't the Dutch stereotyped as beautiful in the way Italians and the French are? Why isn't Netherlands seen as a sensual country full of goodlooking people like Brazil and Hispanic nations are associated with?
Joseph de la Vega's Confusion of Confusion from 1688 made me think of it
Hello, with Christmas approaching I was wondering if I could order Spanish turrΓ³n (and other sweets) from a supermercado webshop and send it to the Netherlands? I looked on Amazon and the prices are way too much compared to prices in supermarkets like Dia etc. Is there a special service or webstore who does this type of shipping? So, buying from a supermarket and shipping it internationally?

I m not quite sure how this happened, sure this is somewhat historical but all of a sudden, the region suddenly swapped from AUstria to Spain. Is there a event now that causes this?
The area that is now Belgium was part of the Spanish Empire for about a year and a half, but pretty much any time I research it, it seems rather disconnected from Spain's global empire during the same period, only being involved in the events on the European mainland. Of course they were not part of Spain itself, but in a personal union, but it still seems strange for them to be so completely disconnected from it. So to what extent if any did the Spanish Netherlands get involved in that empire? And if they didn't, was it a matter of deliberate obstruction on the part of the Spanish, or simply other factors (too affected by the wars in Europe, the commercial decline of the cities making them uninterested in active trade with the rest of the empire, etc.)
[The article in question] (http://theconcordian.org/2015/02/19/beethoven-may-have-been-african-american)
Recently, this article was dug up by some people to point to the possibility of Beethoven being black and started trending. Being somewhat inquiring into this train wreck, I looked into the article itself annnnd, well, holy fuck. A combo of egregiously bad geography and history together.
Now, I quote this directly from the linked article.
>Iβll start with a little history. In 711 A.D., the Moors (black-skinned Muslims of North Africa) crossed the Strait of Gibraltar into what was then the Spanish Netherlands. The Moors were the dominant group there for over 700 years. Beethovenβs mother, Maria Magdalena Keverich, was likely Moorish, being born in the area that was under the direct control of the Moors. Beethovenβs father, Johann Van, was half-Flemish, with Belgium also being within the Moorish territory.
Yeah. This is the article that has kicked off this whole "Beethoven was black!" trend. An article written by somebody so ignorant, they think that the Spanish Netherlands, which is part of modern day Belgium, is in the Iberian Peninsula and is different from Belgium, but that too was somehow occupied by the Moors for 700 years despite being part of the Frankish Kingdoms at the time.
This is, frankly, pretty basic stuff to just... get terribly, terribly wrong.
It should also be mentioned that we have a rather large collection of portraits of Beethoven all painted during his lifetime and that none of the supposed quotes describing him as a black man actually give any citations as to who said them or from where they were sourced at all.
Hello, Dutch friends.
The Netherlands were a Spanish possession for quite a while, under the House of Habsburg, thanks to the abdication of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and his lands being divided between his brother and his child, who would become King of Spain and Lord of the Netherlands, Philip II.
I read an article today about the influence of the Spanish Netherlands in Dutch popular culture, like mentioning the King of Spain in your anthem, having a seriously fucked up view of the Duke of Alba (depicting him in an engraving as a baby eater and mothers telling their kids that he's going to come for them if they keep being naughty), Saint Nicholas arriving on a boat from Spain, with his companion, Zwarte Piet, representing a Moor...
So I was wondering, what other influences did the Spanish leave in the Dutch culture in general and popular imagination?
Particularly in the southern part of the Zeeland province, very close to the border between the two nations, would people have regularly traded or travelled across the border, or would the Dutch considered entering the Spanish Netherlands verboten because it was Papist land?
Short version: Can I order the English version of 'The inner game of Tennis' in a spanish online store, to also be delivered in spain, but paid for by myself living in the Netherlands?
Longer version: My sister's boyfriend plays competitive league. I wanted to give him the inner game of tennis for christmas, but due to delivery delays I didn't get it on time. He has left the Netherlands now to play for a spanish team so I cannot give it to him anymore for probably over a year. I would like a copy for myself anyways. So can I order a new version for him in spain, to be delivered in spain?
Cheers.
How do you complete this mission? I mean, the only acceptable way for me is burgundian inheritance, because conquest will generate enough AE to fight coalitions until 1821, but burgundian AI keeps losing lowlands in suicide "bold fighter" wars.
Hi there,
So I'm looking for someone to exchange e-mails and or letters with.
I'm learning Spanish for about a year now (not very good) and love to write short stories or letters for practice, I just don't know anybody who speaks Spanish and who could point out my mistakes. I tried to find a language learning partner in another sub but figured it's not really what I'm looking for as I really enjoy the longer e-mails/letters instead of chats.
Preferably my e-mails will be partly Spanish and partly English (or Dutch, who knows, maybe there is someone out there trying to learn Dutch).
A bit about me: I used to work in a restaurant before lockdown and hopefully can go back to work really soon because I love it! I have a lot of hobbies, at the moment I'm into bullet journaling, baking and rollerblading. My favourite colour is purple, I really like a good margarita and I live in Amsterdam. I can probably go on and on, but maybe I should put that in a letter.
Cheers, Anna
