... keep reading on reddit β‘So I was watching some youtube videos about cloud seeding using silver iodide to artificially start the nucleation process which leads to rain. Also years ago I saw a show on the weather channel about how micro meteorites can seed clouds so I got to thinking 'why do they use silver iodide when they could just use super fine rock dust to do the trick'. Seems like there would be no risk of soil or animal contamination, maybe I'm missing something
I've set up a silver iodide cannon running off an ethanol engine(should be enough power) with some silver iodide powder inside it.
It's got enough power according to the power meter, yet it won't start raining.
It *is* enabled in the configs, so I don't see the problem.
Anybody know?
Hello soon to be fellow chemists!
My primary question is if anyone knows how soluble silver iodide is in dry THF (probably with small amounts of DEE)? I've searched, but can't find the solubility for this particular solvent.
If you want to know the background for this question, and might have some tips for, or see any obvious flaws in, my planned synthesis, please read on.
For my undergraduate project (sorry if this is considered homework), Iβm doing an acetylide alkylation (reactionsketch: http://imgur.com/a/0lg4G). I will start out with the alkyne pictured and do various self-chosen alkylations. Iβm thinking of starting with iodomethane since this is the simplest reactant and available in the lab. Iβve also seen vinyl iodide and propargyl iodide in the lab, would these work in the same manner as electrophiles? I will hopefully make the acetylide by first adding the starting material in dry THF, followed by EtMgBr (I believe this comes dissolved in DEE) in a N2-atmosphere, and upon heating the acetylide should be generated at 60 degrees. I then cool the reaction to 0 degrees (to promote SN2) and add the iodomethane with a syringe. After some time (how long?), Iβm thinking of splitting my reaction mixture into two mixtures, adding silver nitrate to one of them. If the reaction has worked, silver iodide would precipitate (if and only if silver iodide is NOT soluble in THF). This could also be used as a rough indication of reaction times, and if Iβm not mistaken Ag+ could also aid the reaction by making iodide a better leaving group?
