Any tips on living in a resort town?

I was just able to make a career switch, so now I have the ability to work fully remote. The last three years I’ve only been able to snowboard twice, so I’m definitely looking to change that. I’m looking to move to a resort town in the winter. I live in New England, so I’ve been checking out living in Killington VT. I’ve also checked out Reno Nevada, living there to board the Lake Tahoe resorts. But that is probably more of a 3 year goal. Any tips on living in a resort town, or recommendations on places to move to?

Small Town/Resort "We're Trapped!" Novels like Phantoms or Jurassic Park

So I really dig the whole small town/can't escape/we're up against some sort of evil/monsters kinda thing. I really enjoyed Phantoms by Dean Koontz and Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. (Yes, I have read/considered reading their other books already). I'd be looking for new authors preferably, so I can whiz through their bibliography. Thank you!

Harry starts a train service, and revitalizes a resort town.

Found! Wreaking Havoc! by Catherine or Cate on FFN.

~@~

I'm looking for a fic that is >NOT< "Noncompliant or Just How Angry Was He" by Lil Nezumi. The fic I'm looking for (I'm going to call it "Target Fic" so I don't have to keep saying "the fic I'm looking for") has a lot of similarities, but also differences.

Known points of similarity:

  • Both fics have Harry setting up multiple business ventures that make a lot of money, but he can only do it because he inherited a stonking huge pile of galleons, that he throws around like confetti to get everything off the ground.
  • Both fics have Harry start a train service. In Noncompliant he just decides to set up a train service that's almost a circuit (from West London through the countryside to East London, then back). In the Target Fic, he's actually restarting a service that used to exist but got shut down. People specifically say that they're glad it's back in operation.
  • Both fics have Harry build/revitalize towns at the location of the train stations, and his train service creates a bunch of jobs as well.
  • Both fics have Remus rent a flat in one of Harry's towns. In Noncompliant it's just to be close to Harry (he has the money from an inheritance from the Potters.) In Target Fic, he applies for a job with Harry's company, and reduced rent is one of the perks.
  • In both fics, he hires someone nobody else will as his primary assistant. In Noncompliance it's a female goblin account manager. In Target Fic, it's a female recent Hogwarts grad* (possibly Penelope Clearwater) that everybody else thinks is too young, as his Personal Assistant.*I know they don't "graduate" from secondary school in the UK, but I don't know an easy way to say "somebody who's just finished school" that takes that into account. Is there a Brit term for this that matches "recent grad"?

Known points of difference:

  • Harry is a teen in Target Fic. He's a time-traveller in his younger body in Noncompliance.
  • Target Fic has a Harry who's strictly a Hogwarts student. Can't recall if he's finished school, or doing all this in the summer(s). In Noncompliance he goes to first year at Durmstrang, with a goal of switching schools in alternate years (and to force Hogwarts to upgrade its offerings).
  • In Target fic, one of the towns Harry buys is a derelict resort town. He hires an army of house elves and/or goblins as a construction crew to get it spruced up again. Busines

The story of New Baden Springs Health Resort & Town

This post is dedicated to the memory of Rich Anderson who contributed to the original article about New Baden Springs in the Chariton Collector many years ago.

Hello, r/Kirksville! Today I bring you the story of New Baden Springs, a resort located near Midland, a town a few miles away from Kirksville. The resort’s official name was New Baden Springs Health Resort and it was opened in 1882 to much fanfare and excitement. In addition to plotting a town at the site with businesses, a church, many lots for sale at the price of $50, and a three-story hotel, the owners of the resort captured the water from a natural spring in the area, heated it, and pumped it into outdoor tubs for visitors to enjoy. On May 19, 1882, the Kirksville Weekly Graphic published the first of several articles that claimed the waters had healing properties and could heal illnesses from tuberculosis to kidney disease. It is said that despite the 15 mile buggy ride from Kirksville, the resort was quite popular among townsfolk. Whether the waters actually had healing properties, I cannot attest to that ;-)

Eventually, after the hotel burned down and the residents of New Baden Springs instated a prohibition on alcohol (a meeting which drew 1,500 to 2,000 people might I add!) the town shrank little by little until the early 1900s when a farmer bought the land to raise animals and crops. While the town itself may have dried up, the spring still flows to this day.

ELI5: How do beach towns/resorts keep all the sand from ruining their plumbing and sewers?

Whenever I leave the beach, I've still got sand on me, even if I rinse off when I exit. Inevitably the rest of it gets washed off in a shower or bath. How the hell does all that sand not add up with everyone doing this, practically all at once in the same hotel or in the same town? Wouldn't the sand plug up pipes, or damage them? Wouldn't it ruin a municipal sewer system to have such a steady stream of sediment? What the heck gets done about this?
