A list of puns related to "Progressive Power Metal"
I'm a late comer to the prog metal world.
I got into it with Symphony X's Underworld from 2015 and have been on a quest ever since.
I would love some other band recommendations based on these songs:
- Nevermore - Symphony X
- As I Am - Dream Theater
- Ghosts of Insanity - DGM
These three songs represent the essence of what I like a lot in the style. Clean vocals, fast paced, technical and heavy guitar riffs, epic solos.
I spent some time scouring reddit and have found some very good recommendations, the best of which has been Darkwater - but while they're good, it's very different from the style represented above.
What would you recommend?
> I search alone, dark the night, deep the
> blackest forest, and down to devil's hopyard
> on my way from Salem I lit a fire
> Magical brimstone sparks ashes from the hazel wood
> Dancing with the banshee, fire rose up to the sky.
>
> The dead of night parts the sky, the Salem witch
> hunting eyes Malifica spells
> She flies the ocean shore of Kildare
> Over tombs of the harpy fields
> Lonely girls ride the great beast
> Virginal goddess of Hunt Diana
This is a discussion thread to share thoughts, memories, or first impressions of albums which have lived through the decades. Maybe one first heard this when it came out or are just hearing it now. Even though this album may not be your cup of tea, rest assured there are some really diverse classics and underrated gems on the calendar. Use this time to reacquaint yourself with classic metal records or be for certain you really do not "get" whatever record is being discussed.
Band: Fates Warning
Album: Awaken the Guardian
Released: November 10th, 1986
I've always wondered this. I like all three genres but I don't know how to distinguish between them. And we had The Theory of Everything by Ayreon that featured artists from these genres. And I've also read that most power metal nowadays is influenced by symphonic metal. So what's the difference?
I know it's too specific but i can sing pretty high and was looking for something gothic a la "Type O Negative" or with a Darkwave goth Post-Punk atmosphere like??? but with high singing and without fry scream with Male Singers, because i found a bunch kinda close to the spot but they are all with female singers and it's not the same, idk, the only thing that comes to mind are "Black Sabbath with Dio" or the first "Soundgarden" or "Dream Theater" albums?, though not exactly, can you recommend me something closer to that if you get what i mean, it could be without prog, heheh, thanks anyway.
I want to preface this by saying I've not yet heard the new album. Though as I've seen the reactions from people here and it sparked a thought: "What do we expect to hear from a Nightwish album? and are those expectations justified anymore....?"
I've listened to every Nightwish album over the past month. With full bias disclosure, I tend to gravitate towards the more progressive, cinematic, musical-storytelling side of nightwish, and less towards the dancable/sing-song-along songs. By this I mean, I'll take a Greatest Show On Earth, Ghost Love Score, Song of Myself, Scaretale, PATP, or 7 Days to the Wolves, over a Wish I had an Angel, I Want My Tears Back, or Bye Bye Beautiful (though I've nothing against the latter per ce and stil enjoy them every now and then).
Listening to every album it's easy to hear an evolution in their music.
--AFF is a Folk-Rock album, with a bit of gothic undertones.
--Oceanborn is a Dark Power Metal album
--Wishmaster is your standard 1990s a Power Metal album, sounds exactly like stratovarius.
--Century Child is your standard 2000s Gothic Metal album. (though the early orchestrations are a nice touch)
--Once is where the prog and cinematic influences start, though I'd call more pure Symphonic Metal album (with some folk and gothic undertones). The Stratovarius sound is gone by this point.
--Dark Passion Play is maybe the blend of old and new, I'd call it maybe more Gothic Cinematic Symphonic Metal, but even the gothic comes and goes. Probably the most (or second most) cinematic, full on theatrical album and quite a bit of folk elements too.
--Imaginaerum starts to bring on more prog influences, you can see the power metal really fading away by this album, going full swing on the cinematic/theatrical stuff. Pretty heavy musical storytelling. I'd call this an Cinematic Symphonic Metal album (with prog undertones)
-- Endless Forms most beautiful This seems like the latest evolution, becoming essentially a Progressive Metal band with symphonic and folk "costumes". Even listening to interviews you can really tell the band is more interested in experimenting, being prog, and have little to no interest in the powermetal sound or the gothic sound anymore, this album shows it pretty clearly. (Though we do get the occassional sound of what was from Alpenglow and Shudder Before the Beautiful)
So where I am going with this... well after listening to that Marco interview f
... keep reading on reddit β‘Today I'm looking for your favourite prog metal bands who do not take themselves too seriously. I'm thinking; all over the place experimentation with funny/crude lyrics. Think the prog metal equivalent of Ween or Faith No More/Mr Bungle.
At the moment Devin Townsend seems like the biggest contender, for example; I've heard of a song called the Mighty Masterbator. Also, I was listening to Empath the other day and found myself really liking how crazy Devin went with experimentation , where in a prog metal album there are even snippets of disney-esque soundtracks.
Someone also recommend me Giant Squid the other day, who aren't directly hilarious or anything. But I get the sense of them being less serious and dark/ deep then other prog metal. And theyre fucking amazing, with good variance in different styles.
Edit. Just remembered about Twelve Foot Ninja too
and Haken -Cockroach King
