I've actually used a plumb line as a measure of verticalness. Yeah, just made that word up.

Plumb bobs need a little time to 'settle' and many people simply don't have time or patience, thus they have fallen out of favor with the speed and ease of use of spirit levels and laser. Yet plumb bobs never need batteries, never need to be calibrated, and are foolproof except perhaps in strong wind. Plumb bobs and their lines, can convey a sense of 3D alignment very quickly, in some cases when levels and lasers can't. They can provide a line of 'marks' very quickly across great lengths when levels and lasers fail or not practical to use. If used with a protractor (or even a carpenters speed square) degrees can be measured. And of course they can sit in place all day while you build that perfect tall wall. Laser beams can diffuse apart over distance, but the plumb line remains true from one end to another.
I use mine to mark whole lengths of studding inside finished walls when hanging stuff like cupboards and shelves, verifying vertical runs of pipe, setting picture frames, checking walls and door frames, etc, etc. Here is a picture of me checking my shed for movement after 5 years of ground shifting hot summers and freezing winters. The plumb bob confirms amount of moment and direction, easily, since 5 years ago.
