The details:
Reddit user /u/kmcclry highlighted this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFQeGKG8KoQ&t=290s from earlier in the season where James Allison speaks about the new changes to this years Mercs. Interestingly, James mentions that the "noticeable" change is the bump in the plenum area and how their cars this year have, with the help of HPP redesigned the plenum area, the intake area of the engine, retune the engine around that, and squeeze a lot more horsepower out of the power unit as a consequence.
And the crucial bit is in the next immediate sentence, that they had to do this in a regulatory environment that only gave them one shot at this.
A response to an earlier post speculating about the link to the temperature sensor protests in September, the subsequent FIA rulings and Mercedes' sudden performance advantage had a very interesting comment from /u/Bot_from_around_here suggesting they could be using water injection.
This leads us to the video above which is self explanatory, but i'll add the interesting bits here for those that don't have the time to watch:
I saw this post about this dude's theory which I don't believe and was proven wrong. https://www.reddit.com/r/F1Technical/comments/qwqlta/how_mercedes_likely_gained_50_horsepower_through/
It got me thinking though about how they would cool the air further without breaking the TR and keeping things simple. What I thought up seems very plausible, so hopefully brighter minds can chime in and tell me why I'm wrong.
We know that the Intercooler after the Turbo is water cooled, and iirc it was also confirmed at the beginning of the season that the bump over the engine is due to a Variable Plenum Intake system. All season long RBR has been pointing to the plenum system as to why Merc had fantastic acceleration after a low speed corner. They have also been accusing the plenum of manipulating the temperature giving them a boost.
What if instead of doing something with the sensors the answer was just a lot more simple? Merc could have extended the height of the plenum, because they placed another water cooled IC in the middle of it. If the IC was thin enough to allow a strong amount of airflow to pass through, it could use the backpressure caused by the IC splitting the plenum to its advantage. The air running from the first IC after the turbo would further cool down as it travels to the intake manifold. It would then pass through the Plenum IC and enter the bottom chamber further cooled down.
It seems very likely they could easily implement this system as it would be as simple as running hoses from the turbo IC to the plenum IC. There may even be an advantage to adding these extra Inter Coolers as the water flowing through the whole system could run colder than previously. Would also help to explain why RBR was asking about the placement of the sensors on the Merc.
With a variable inner plenum they have the ability to adjust the wave length of the air that is pulsed from the valves opening and closing. At 15,000 rpms I can't imagine that a very large variation in length is needed to affect the intake wave length. The best advantage Merc could use this for would be to change the wave so the air gets sucked into the cylinder with a higher force.
How do the IC and VPI work together? Well the temperature in the bottom half of the plenum past the IC would be lower making it denser, and adjusting the VPI would force that denser air into the cylinder

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
Hi all,
I'm not exactly new to Goldwings, I used to have an 83 naked Wing, loved it. I made the perhaps bad call of selling it a couple of years back, and recently made the decision to get another one. I know that the older ones tend to be unloved, so made (another) perhaps bad decision of getting a very cheap non-running one with some big plans up ahead. For now, I'm just trying to get it running. My goal was not necessarily to save money, I know I'll probably spend more money on this than I would have on a running bike. It just seemed like a fun project to revive a Wing that would have ended up in the scrap yard after changing hands a couple more times.
It's a 1980, seems like it was an Interstate at one point, but all the Interstate bits are gone, not a big deal to me. I don't believe it's run in quite a few years, the gas tank is very rusty inside and the 2 gallons of gas inside are completely bad, doesn't even smell like fuel. I checked compression, got about 140 on the LH side, 120 or so on the RH. That's a bit low, but considering how long it's been sitting, I figure it might improve after running for a bit. I also checked for spark at all 4 plugs, spark is nice and blue. I installed new spark plugs, and it seems to me that it should fire on starting fluid at this point. I tried spraying starting fluid into the top of the carb plenum (no air filter of course), but I can't seem to get anything to happen. I figured maybe the plug wires had been installed wrong, so I swapped the front and back wires, still nothing. It seemed like the starting fluid wasn't getting pulled into the carbs, so I thought maybe the timing was off. I took off the timing covers, and timing seems to be dead on. Another interesting thing is that the timing belts look virtually brand new. I think someone tried to change them as maintenance some years ago, and the bike never started back up. This is supported by completely fresh looking oil. The bike has gone through a few owners in the meantime that all tried to get it running, so history is basically nonexistent. Odometer shows 44k miles. I suppose it could be 144k, but judging by the condition of the parts that it still has, I believe 44k is probably the true mileage. I seem to be a bit stuck in the diagnostic process. I plan on sticking a borescope through the plug holes tomorrow to check out the condition of the combustion chambers, but I can't think of anything that could be wrong in there since I have fairly decent compres

I've been quite surprised by the fact that not a lot of people know what was really wrong with Honda engines during the 2015~2017 era and what they have done to fix it, so I've thought that I might as well give some explanation.
So what the hell is Size-Zero exactly?
You should have already heard of size-zero engines from Honda during the McHonda days. Though what really was a size-zero engine? Size-Zero engine, just like its name suggest, was a design philosophy which was aimed towards smaller and better packaging of the PU, with which the goal was to achieve superior aero performance, thereby negating any loss of power due to tighter packaging and resulting in a better overall performance. In order to do this, there were 3 key parts to the Size-Zero concept : more compact intake induction including the inlet plenum, more compact exhaust manifold and most importantly, more compact turbo. These were the places where you could potentially save a lot of space since shrinking the engine block itself was limited
Firstly induction system, mainly the inlet plenum. Intake filter as well as the Inlet plenum of the RA615H from the 2015 season was very flat and small, without any humps whatsoever to fit in snug under the engine cover. This resulted in a sub-optimal pressure management to the intakes, with uneven distribution of air to each cylinders at a given time. Actually, the entire induction system suffered from such issues due to a very tight packaging. One of the biggest problem caused by a small plenum chamber was how the intake funnel from the plenum chamber connected to each cylinders were designed. They were installed on an angle, with each intake funnel intertwined with funnel from the opposite cylinder, kind of forming an X-shape when seen from the front. This was in order to provide enough room for the VIS (Variable Intake System, re-allowed from 2015 onwards) to move up and down, since due to the aforementioned small plenum chamber, it meant there was no headroom for a VIS to move vertically but only horizontally. Obviously this made the whole system horrendously complex.
Secondly, the exhaust manifold. RA615H's exhaust manifold was one single exhaust pipe connected to the exhaust port of every single cylinder. This resulted in a very very slim side profiles since the exhaust manifold takes up a lot of space next to the combustion compartment of the ICE, but there's obviously a reason other manufacturers use a complicated, large exhaust wit

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
