As someone who was on both sides of the pep rally (audience and athlete) I honestly hate the whole experience.
Audience: they cram 1000+ people into one gym and god help you if you are in the middle of the stands or middle row, every 5 seconds they say “scoot in make as much room as you can” and I’m sure everyone knows that’s feeling when you’re stuck between total strangers or if you’re lucky a friend or someone you might know and you’re forced to smell all their BO, the farts, over perfumed and Cologned people, then you got to sit there for an hour watching cheerleaders and Pom squad do their routine, listen to some of the worst music ever, hear the sports team basically jerk off to themselves…. Not to mention out of that 1000, let’s assume 300 will actually go to said game, and even less will watch it on tv (if it aired) and even worse you have to hear the band scream in your ears.
Athlete: you got to carry around your jersey all day unless you have a teacher willing to hold it for you, you get pulled out of class and have everyone stare at you like a criminal, then you have to stand in a hot hallway so they can walk you in like cattle.
I mean I love football and it basically saved my life, but I hate all the forced attention it gets.
I did.
I looked a fool.
I won the contest.
I'm the strict disciplinarian difficult asshole science teacher on our small rural campus.
Why did I do it?
I would absolutely not be voluntold to have a pie thrown at me...
But my students wanted me to dance... With them.
To be with them, not above them.
So I did.
I believe (your mileage may vary) that teaching is a role... not a position.
I am humbled that my (possesive) students wanted their (possessive) teacher to just be with them as they celebrated.
So I did.
I tell my students, and confirm understanding with a first week quiz question, that I am not their friend. I am their teacher. It's a specific thing; not separate, just different.
I'm glad I danced.
I find the saying "Dance like no one is watching" to be disingenuous.

All of our schools' 2,500+ students will be in the gym for the Winter rally. The various clubs and sports teams will present themselves. I will be represent our Wrestling team.
Good morning Saratoga High,
These men that stand beside me, they are the team captains of our Wrestling team, but they are more than that. They are my brothers. And although we do not share the blood that flows through our veins, we share in every drop of sweat spilled, every shot executed, every takedown performed, every loss endured, and each victory won! From here to San Domenico (Rival School)!
This coming Friday, San Domenico will pull into our parking lot,
they will enter our school
and when they step foot into our gym they will find that Northwest is ready!
And not just our wrestlers, but the whole of our great school!
Our Freshmen!

Went to pickup @ a Thai place that is usually pretty quick with their food. See three obvious Dashers sitting together in the corner of the restaurant cheering each other on. Amble over and ask how long they've been waiting. Shortest time was 25 minutes. Lol. Unassigned and left.

They told our grade to wear green
So of course I’m breaking out the master chief costume
And before you say I’m some loser who doesn’t play sports or some third string player.
I’m the leading home run hitter and catcher at my school.
And even I think they are a waste of time and make everyone uncomfortable.
Like last Friday they had a pep rally for the football team and crammed 2500+ kids in a gym and kept telling us to scoot in to make as much room as possible and it got to the point where literally you couldn’t even get your phone out without bumping into the person next to you.
And even worse, I’d say maybe 500 (and that’s a very generous) would even go to the game (and generally they only go to hang with friends) and I’d say maybe 300 would watch it on tv (if it aired)
And then it’s just one giant circle jerk for the football team, like the marching band would play as they enter and then on top of that they would play other music over the band (which as much as I hated being in band I still find disrespectful) and the lights go out and strobe lights and crap and then they expect all of us to stand and clap.
Granted yes I personally support them because some of my friends play football.
Then on top of that they have like 30 people talk about how great the team is and stuff to a crowd where the vast majority of the school couldn’t care less.
And like the assemblies, I can understand the senior year finale assembly if it was optional, but the rest.
Like the vast majority of the stuff they tell us can be told in an announcement.
I’m not saying get rid of pep rallies and assemblies but I am saying make them optional
