A list of puns related to "Outcrossing"
Is it ever really a good idea to mix breeds? Iβm not talking about doodles.. but I mean just in general? I know that a lot of people would say no but I started thinking about a conversation I was a bystander of- it was about if a person bred two registered dogs of different breeds to start breeding and improving the resulting mix if that makes sense?
Iβve heard people I know talk about doing this and it sounds like it could be done ethically but I feel like thereβs a lot of unanswered questions for people like me who donβt know much about breeding as of right now. I know the pups wouldnβt be able to be registered because theyβd no longer be considered a recognized breed even if pedigrees were known and everything was good with the parent dogs.
Would it still be considered BYB if all the proper steps were taken just because the litter is a mixed breed?
I have been very fascinated by the idea of bettering breeds and breed preservation over the past year or so.
Recently I've been learning a lot about the health in breeds that I hadn't really delved much into in the past. I learned about the project done with Dalmatians wherein they outcrossed to a single Pointer in order to resolve the uric acid issue.
There are breeds with much more complex health issues that we don't fully understand and there doesn't seem to be a single gene that they can simply outcross to breed out. For instance, the Doberman with their high DCM risk.
Can we better breeds like the Doberman with careful outcrossing? It seems like a massive challenge to carefully outcross in a way that preserves breed temperament characteristics as well as physical "type". Perhaps Viszla could maintain the type, but what would they bring to the table healthwise?
I'm looking for a debate here as much as a discussion with others who are interested in breed genetics and what we can do to preserve and better our breeds. Is there anything that we CAN do? Is it ethical to breed dogs with such high health risks?
Hey guys what are your views on outcrossing our glorious breed?
Personally I think crossing with other working breeds may be useful if done appropriately.
So I learned about Outcrossing on this sub. I've been researching Dalmatians as they're the obvious example. It seems that it took a while, but many people support this outcross now, is that fair to say? Are any other breeds doing this? Surely it's not as simple as choosing a breed to outcross and everything is solved but is it reasonable to believe educated people can make breeds healthier? What are the pros, cons, ethics around outcrossing?
I'd like to hear any and all thoughts on the subject or even good websites as I'm having trouble finding objective information and would like to know more about the subject. Thanks!
I was thinking about this the other day about how some breeds have such a small Gene pool that they're literally shooting themselves in the foot even with all the health testing. So I was wondering what the consensus is to registers opening up the studbooks again?
For an example, take the German Shepherd- lab cross. Most of them come from BYBs and puppy Mills so have substantial health issues. But what if that mix was put into the hands of a reputable breeder? Would we get a good dog with a balanced temperament and working ability?
I would also like to understand the reason so many people look down on outcrossing, like it's the worst thing in the world, when almost every single dog breed is a result of outcrossing and mixing. Could this outcrossing be used in a controlled way to benefit many breeds?
Anybody here have any experience with the Gen3 Outcross? Itβs being sold at Costco, which obviously inspires confidence due to their returns policy, but Iβm curious if anyone can weigh in on its build quality, real world range etc. Hard to find any reviews (aside from the manufacturers website) and only a couple on Costcoβs website. Any insight is appreciated. Cheers!

Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
It really does, I swear!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
