A list of puns related to "Oligodynamic Effect"
oligodynamic effect per Wikipedia
I came across a quick explanation of how certain heavy metals are naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial, etc. While we donβt fully understand why, it is believed to be due to ions disrupting, at least, bacterial cells.
Thus, copper, silver, and brass, for example, are naturally sterilize themselves over time.
So, my first question is thisβside note: I firmly believe that science, religion, and magick can agree/work hand in handβcould or would this mean these (heavy) metals are also self-cleansing over time too?
My second one isβ¦just curious if anyone else has comes across how science does or could, in fact, aid in magick?
Saw this recently and can't wrap my head about how this is even possible, let alone how it works!
I just read about the oligodynamic effect on brass doorknobs automatically disinfecting them within a matter of hours. I immediately thought of how I always steer away from brass fittings with my equipment and go for stainless. Is there only a thin layer of brass on common fittings that erode away quickly or something?
So I just saw the front page TIL post about brass being self-disinfecting due to this effect, and began to wonder, as a mild germaphobe; if this is the reason that the brass section of instruments is brass.
I'm afraid Wikipedia has completely baffled me with it's so-called 'explanation' of how brass doorknobs and silver are able to disinfect themselves. Can you ELI5 how they do this, or what causes the disinfection?
Hello I'm a student and as part of finishing my third year I'm required to design and perform an experiment related to the natural sciences(doesn't have to be too complicated as I'm not at university yet).
So I wonder how hard would it be to examine the oligodynamic effect?
Would I need an autoclave? Are any bacteria strains considered easy to work with?
And also how would I measure the effect? Put some on a piece of glass for x amount of time and an equal amount on a piece of metal and then compare? And what is the easiest way to measure bacteria growth?
Would I just compare density of them under a microscope?
I know that that is a large amount of questions but I would be very glad if somebody could help me with at least a couple of them
Thanks in advance
From Wiki: "Silver and most silver compounds have an oligodynamic effect and are toxic for bacteria, algae, and fungi in vitro. The antibacterial action of silver is dependent on the silver ion.[11] The effectiveness of silver compounds as an antiseptic is based on the ability of the biologically active silver ion (Ag+) to irreversibly damage key enzyme systems in the cell membranes of pathogens.[11] The antibacterial action of silver has long been known to be enhanced by the presence of an electric field. Applying an electric current across silver electrodes enhances antibiotic action at the anode, likely due to the release of silver into the bacterial culture.[17] The antibacterial action of electrodes coated with silver nanostructures is greatly improved in the presence of an electric field.[18]
Silver, used as a topical antiseptic, is incorporated by bacteria it kills. Thus dead bacteria may be the source of silver that may kill additional bacteria.[19]"

So there you have it!! Silver kills bad stuff!!! Not just bad monetary policy!!
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!
