How do people make a living working at a nonprofit organisation?

As in, if they don't make a profit then how can people who work of them have a salary? Unless I'm taking the name too literally and I don't really know what a nonprofit actually is lol

A new nonprofit organisation to fight for our privacy and fundamental rights

Hi everyone, I'm Matteo, co-founder of Privacy Network, a nonprofit organisation born last year focused on privacy, cybersecurity, data protection and fundamental rights.

We are based in Italy and have been very active locally. We hosted numerous events in Italy and we're actively engaged in the community to try and do our share.

Lately, we've been trying to approach a more international audience, which is why I'm writing here.

We do not want money, just some help to:

  1. raise the awareness of people regarding the importance of privacy and what it means for our fundamental rights
  2. acquire more insights from people around the world

I honestly believe we're doing good work, and feel like we really need as many watchdogs association as we can muster. For me and our other members, this is not our "main" job. We don't gain any money from this project (on the contrary...).

Our main objective is to raise awareness about privacy and data protection matters.

Our aim is towards consumers, professionals, organisations and supervisor authorities (hence the name "network").

We feel that privacy and data protection are topics that should be faced with an holistic approach. We believe in a world where data processing can be ethical and actually useful to the whole world, not just in the interest of those few that exploit personal data.

We are doing this daily by creating online content and organising local events about these topics (our biggest event has had the partecipation of around 300 people so far). We will probably try to reach schools as well later this year.

Our next big event will be at the Milan Digital Week 2020 (https://www.milanodigitalweek.com/en/) where we will present our free guide to privacy friendly tools and services and where we will expose the privacy risks for people living in "smart cities".

We also assist those that want to make a complaint to a Supervisor Authority but lack the legal expertise. The same goes for exercising data subject rights under the GDPR. Among our members we have specialised privacy lawyers that can help. We've already had some health-care related instances.

Our current members are mostly professionals actively engaged in privacy related jobs.

How hard is to open nonprofit sport organisation?

Guten Tag.

I'm foreigner in this beautiful country. I'm working here as a software developer (self learned).

I would like to ask, how hard/fast is the process of creating non profit sport organisation? In my free time I would like to work as a coach, totally free of charge, but my visa says, that I am software developer...

Is it possible to be non profit coach in my case? And if "yes", what is the process of creating such nonprofit sport organisation and how hard it supposed to be?

P.S. By diploma I am fencing coach (but quit with this sport more then 11 years ago), Master Degree(branch: Olympic and Professional Sports). I realized that I want to teach people when I was only 6... After I quit fencing I've started to do martial arts and more then 7 years I'm completely in love with that. I used to work as a kids instructor back in my motherland, cause there you need Physical Culture Diploma, and doesn't matter which kind of sport... But, after several years I realized that I need money in order to create and provide family,so I educated myself and became software engineer. So now, by engineering I'm providing family and paying my bills, but I need coaching for my soul...

Vielen Dank für alle Hilfe. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Van1n1

Announcing Veritas News NonProfit Organisation

I am hereby founding the Veritas News Organisation, this is the official news organisation of the SPQR party. Our news will often focus on events surrounding the SPQR party or issues the SPQR party focuses on. It will also occasionally do explanation posts and cover major subreddit events.

Although obviously the news org will have an SPQR slant, we will stray away from stating any factual errors as the subreddits various newspapers from the past have often been a useful historical record and I wouldn't want any sort of error to discredit that, therefore we will employ vigorous fact checking on every single piece of content we produce.

It seems that since the toast post closed its doors newspapers on the sub have died off, and I want to bring the idea back with fresh new ideas. I plan to make the first edition of the veritas newspaper this weekend so stay tuned.

Nonprofit Organisation (NPO) sentiment survey

Hello Malaysian Redditors!

We are a group of student volunteer consultants under The Malaysian Social Project and we have been tasked with solving a specific business problem for a nonprofit organisation. We are gauging the awareness of the current nonprofit organisation environment and, specifically, the awareness and donor behaviors for Mercy Malaysia.

How does this survey help us?

Your responses will provide us with valuable insights to the following three questions:

  1. Which social causes do Malaysians donate to?
  2. Who do Malaysians donate to?
  3. Why do Malaysians donate?
  4. How do Malaysians donate?

We really appreciate your time and sincere responses. Once again, we truly thank you for the time to answer this survey.

[NY] Nonprofit organisation completely run by unpaid interns, legal?

I got an internship at a nonprofit that works as an intermediary between donors and other nonprofits. The internship is unpaid. I was eager to get some 'real world experience' in my field so I chose to accept their offer. This nonprofit has accountants, designers, programmers, marketing people, human resources, the works... but every single one of them is an unpaid intern. There is not a single person who gets paid other than our boss, who makes his money from taking a cut of the donations to other nonprofits. Our boss also comes up with completely unrelated projects on a whim (websites for himself, websites for his well-off friends, children's charities, book services) and assigns them at will, claiming they are for a good cause. These projects are then monetised and he cashes in on their resulting profits. I should add that quite a few of the interns are highly educated student visa holders with tentative footing in the United States so I understand that they are hesitant to speak up. There is no semblance of mentorship or organisation here (which as I understand is a must for unpaid internships), the interns teach each other as best they can to get the work done.

My question is, how is this legal? Can he really do this because of his 5013c status? If it is not legal, what are my options? I'm honestly not interested in monetary compensation for my work, I just want it to stop. This internship has felt like a nightmare straight out of r/latestagecapitalism and even if I leave, I fear what kind of precedence this sets forth.

tl;dr nonprofit behaves very much like a business where no one but the boss gets paid

Edit: spelling and formatting (sorry this is new to me)

[EUROPE] Where to open an "internet" nonprofit organisation?

For the past years I have been running this science education project on the internet, with the main purpose of increasing the general scientific knowledge in my country (in the EU). I now would like to transform this project into a nonprofit organisation and I was wondering whether I could open the organisation in a different country than my own in Europe or even maybe the UK.

The reason is that my country has a really bad bureaucracy while other countries may make it easier to start a nonprofit organisation. While this project is localised (it's in my native language), the project runs solely on the internet, so it's not more based in my country than in another's.

What do you think?

Sorry if my grammar is not perfect but English is not my first language!

I'm part of a 3 person nonprofit organisation that is struggling with daily standups. How can we improve?

A bit about us: We are a three member not for profit team that's working to improve the health in our local community. Like many young nonprofits we are constantly testing new ideas and strategies, to find what works before scaling.

Key points about our situation: -we work remotely -we each work on the project one hour a day -we all have shift jobs so we are rarely free at the same time -we try to do daily standups via Skype/Phone (5 minutes maximum) but organising these is a nightmare

Most days we end up not having a daily "telephone standup" because finding a time when everyone is free is difficult. We end up sending 20 texts back and forth just to try and organise a time for the standup :(

None of us share calendars so we can't share them and easily find suitable times.

So I would love to know if any of you have ideas on how we can better schedule our telephone standups, to make sure we do them at least 3 days a week?

Thank you

Question about nonprofit organisations providing legal counseling to refugees in Germany.

I've been volunteering with the Red Cross at a refugee center in my city. It is an emergency make shift 'Erstaufnahmestelle' due to the high numbers of refugees coming in at the moment and everything is a bit chaotic. I was approached yesterday and today by a refugee from Syria who arrived in Germany only a few days ago (from the Serbia - Hungary - Vienna - Munich route), and he told me he wants to get to Norway. I told him I don't know anything about the legal implications of that and since he's now registered at the German Erstaufnahmestelle, I don't know what implications that has for him if he tries to flee to Norway. He says he never meant to make it to Germany, but due to the confusion and chaos he basically ended up on a bus that took him to Munich. He keeps asking me about it even though, I have told him I am not a lawyer and I cannot help him any further, and he should try to find a social worker or red cross worker to further direct him. However, since every worker is super busy (over 1000 refugees have arrived to this center in just a few days), he doesn't know who to turn to, nor do I.

Is there a phone number of an organization that can guide him on the process? I would like to know where to redirect him so he can get some answers. Thank you!

Me and my partner are building a marketing/funding platform for nonprofits. Launching a minimal product in 3 days and looking for tips on what organisations to focus on in the beginning!

We're starting super small. For now it'd be just a page for a nonprofit and the ability to raise money for a specific project or just in general. We're in incorporated, already had a small investment and have been working on different ideas for a while. And we'd be using Stripe Connect so that funds go directly to the organization, so it's all totally legit. Just need help convincing some nonprofits to jump in the water.

So, if you have a minute, head over to:

http://www.marginalchange.com

and fill out the "join beta" form. I hate companies that bombard me with announcements in a super excited tone, so I'd never do that to anyone. It's a promise!

P.S. Oh, also, we're not taking a cut from donations. Any other feedback is much, much appreciated. Upvote for visibility!
