Fold Evolution before LUCA: Common Ancestry of SH3 domains and OB domains | Molecular Biology and Evolution

Hopefully it is not too technical for this site, but we have a paper coming out that shows that two of the oldest and simplest protein folds, the OB fold and the SH3 domain, share a common ancestor. The divergence took place before the ribosome was fully mature, which means it happened before the last common universal ancestor of life. Even though we have been doing this type of research for a while it still amazes me that we can look back ~4 billion years and see so much detail.

I'm Dr. Dan Kuebler, Dean of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences at Franciscan University of Steubenville with a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley. I’m answering questions about how order and chance work together in evolution.

Hi Reddit, I’m Dr. Dan Kuebler and I’m here today to talk about order and chance in regards to biological evolution. I’ll also offer some personal reflections on whether or not order implies purpose.

Here is my proof: https://www.facebook.com/MagisReasonFaith/photos/a.140508302638663/3552219768134149/

Update: I am wrapping up and have to go, but thanks for all the great questions! I enjoyed answering them.

Is Covid Really Over??? A particularly contagious and deadly subvariant of the coronavirus delta mutant is spreading in Ukraine, the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences announced on Friday.

The AY.122 version, which is mainly widespread in Russia, has already been identified in seven counties in Ukraine. According to the announcement, the researchers identified 12 different variants of the delta mutant in samples obtained from a public health center under the Ministry of Health in Ukraine.

And their spectrum is different from those that spread in the country in November.

The experts added. According to them, the delta AY.122 subvariant, which is currently actively spreading in Russia, has appeared as a new variant in Ukraine. This subvariant is more contagious than other variants of the delta and causes serious complications, in many cases leading to death, scientists said. It was also suggested that this sub-variant is responsible for the high mortality rate in Ukraine.

My school offers a professional science masters (PSM) in biotech along with regular Ms degree in molecular biology. I’m will be finishing my Bs in spring 2022 and will have worked as a lab tech for a very well known research institute in San Diego for nearly a year by the time I graduate.

Would it be more beneficial for me to go the PSM route if it allows me to continue working as a lab technician while I’m getting my masters or would getting my Ms in molecular biology and not working be more beneficial? Long term, I’m hoping obtaining my masters would help me gain higher up positions in the biotech industry when I’m older. I’m already an β€œold” student as I will be 32 when I graduate with my Bs, so I’m sidelining the doctorate option due to the amount of time it will take me to graduate and enter the workforce.

MS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in UPD vs. MS Biochemistry in Manila: What should I choose?

Hi! I got my BS Biology degree in UPLB and I currently work here in NCR. As I look through yung mga programs na pwede ko itake as masters, sila yung nag stand out sakin. Hindi ako makapili tbh. Ang research interest ko talaga kasi is cell physiology, pathways, enzymes, mga ganun. I also plan on being a prof. My only worry pag nag MS MBB ako sa Diliman is that I will take some undergrad courses pa unlike sa UPM na Biochem wala na need i take. Kaso di ko alam kung worth it ba na di magtake ng additional units in UPM kung mas maganda ang other program. What do you think guys? Anong meron sa isa na wala sa other one? Tsaka anong mga labs ang mas maganda?

PhD in Molecular Biology, and I just got put on academic probation

I've struggled since my first semester. Problems have included:

  1. Many focus, organization and procrastination issues related to previously-undiagnosed ADHD and anxiety

  2. Being cheated on and losing a 6-year-long relationship, followed by deep depression

  3. Advisor's hands-off style at complete odds with my need for guided direction

  4. The global pandemic interrupting and essentially stealing a year's worth of time; isolation

  5. Trying to find medical professionals, psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, etc. who would accept me as a patient and could execute the right treatment with my insurance

  6. Not being able to regain enthusiasm for research and not sticking with a project

  7. Building myself back up emotionally while attending to my mental issues associated with my disorders

I just had my committee meeting which I had been utterly fearful of, knowing full-well I couldn't possibly present anything of real substance to them, and I was going to have to provide an explanation, and hope they would be semi-satisfied with a half-assed (but not really half-assed) start on a new project. The result: if I don't have an incredibly-improved spring semester, and my research doesn't hit its stride, I will be removed from the program. My department won't recuse me from my research duties, to instead just be a graduate teaching assistant, while I work on myself. I have to do all or none.

I want to do research. I've only ever had one plan in my life, to research epigenetic effects in humans. Since I was in high school. I don't know what else I would even try to do. And now I'm on the cusp of realizing that I do not have the ability to be a scientist, to be in my chosen profession.

I'm not looking for answers or solutions, because I know there really isn't a solution in that simplistic sense. I just needed to write put this out and be in my feelings, because I am scared now.

how to break into biotech with a bachelors in molecular and cell biology with alot of research background

So i recently graduated in may with a degree in molecular and cell biology and i am currently working in a research lab at a university. My original plan was to apply to optometry school during this my gap year but i realised that i dont want to go to optometry school anymore. I am currently looking for an alternative for at least the next year because my current job contract ends in july and i am currently living at home and I reallly really want to move out around that time but i will need to have job secured by then. I was wondering what career/job options are out there for someone like me and i have alot research experience in terms of bench work. I am also open to learning new skills like coding or data analysis. I am only 21 so i am pretty open to anything as long as i have a decent salary, preferably $40-50K so that i can move out and live on my own.

Molecular convergent evolution between echolocating dolphins and bats?

Many creationists claim that this study from 2013 showed how two unrelated species i.e bats and dolphins have the same genetic mutations for developing echolocation despite these mutations not being present in their last common ancestor.

I found two more studies from 2015 showing that how their is no genome wide protein sequence convergence and that the methods used in the 2013 study were flawed. Here are the studies:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4408410/?report=reader

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4408409/?report=reader#!po=31.3953

Can somebody please go through these studies and tell me what their main points are?(Since I'm not the best at scanning them). Can somebody also please tell me what the current scientific take is for this issue?Do bats and dolphins really share the same 200 mutations as shown in the 2013 study?or is this info outdated based on the two subsequent studies from 2015?

Edit:I have seen some of the comments but they don't answer my question.Sure, even if bats and dolphins share the same mutations on the same gene, that wouldn't be that much of a problem for Evolution. However my question is specifically "whether the study from 2013 which I mentioned above was refuted by the the two subsequent studies also mentioned above?"I want to know if biologists, today, still hold the view that bats and dolphins have gone through convergent evolution on the molecular level regarding echolocation or is that view outdated?
