ASUS ROG Z690 Hero Motherboard; Two mobos dead in 3 days, one caught on fire.

Hi all,

As the title states, it appears like there may potentially be an issue with the Z690 Hero motherboard. I built myself a brand new computer using the new Hero board. Bought directly from newegg via a combo that included ddr5 due to the scarcity of ddr5 at this moment. Got all the components and built the system. Powers on, I install windows, all is good. About five hours in all of a sudden, only just browsing the internet, it hard shuts off, like the power went out. I try turning it back on but nothing. I smell burning coming from the motherboard.

To find out what was wrong, I went to microcenter and purchased 3 items, another 12700k (in case the first one died with the mobo), another z690 hero, and another corsair rm1000x (in case it was the power supply). I determined the power supply was not dead, and the motherboard was. So we replaced the motherboard (thankfully it did not take any other component including my GTX 1080). I rebuild it all from scratch again, making absolutely certain no wire is being placed incorrectly or sitting where it shouldnt be. I turn it on, it works and I get it up and running. As a bit of a sanity check, I run AIDA 64 on the cpu and ram, and run Furmark on the GPU, both for roughly two hours, just as a gut check to ensure nothing is seriously wrong. All is good, no issues. I play some BF2042 later in the day, no problems there either. Then late at night I am merely surfing the web and all of a sudden it hard shuts off again, and this time when I look over there I see a component on the motherboard literally on fire. I quickly switch the psu off and unplug it from the wall (the mobo also tried to restart during this endeavor before I turned the psu off and yanked the cord from the psu socket to ensure I wasn't going to burn my house down.

At this point I am suspicious. One bad lemon, fine. Two, with the exact same failure potentially, that's no coincidence. I felt like it could be the motherboards are bad, or the ram is bad (which I doubt, ram should not cause this type of failure, but its new ram, and I am not an expert when it comes computer and electrical engineering), or my power supply is bad (either the unit or one of the cables). So I go on this reddit to see if maybe just maybe anyone else has said anything. Well to my surprise, I find someone else has had the exact same component go.

[USA-NY] [H] i9-9900ks with Mobo and AIO, EVGA 1200W PSU, Seasonic 650W PSU [W] Local Cash

~~Timestamps: https://imgur.com/a/wv658iG/

Hey everyone - cleaning out some old parts and hoping to give someone a good deal. Feel free to pm with questions but note that this is local only - I don’t want to go through the hassle of shipping.

I9-9990ks, Z390 Aorus Master, and Corsair AIO - $300. The i9 works great and was delidded/lapped, I just upgraded to a 12900k and don’t need it anymore. Only selling as a bundle, will not part out. I will throw in the seasonic PSU as well for free if you buy it first. Hopefully a good starting place for a budget PC build.

EVGA 1200W PSU: $125. Comes with a variety of modular cables. Worked great, just too big for a 011.

Seasonic 650W PSU: $50. Only comes with the non-modular cables so knocking down the price.

You can have all of it for $425

Local is Manhattan (10036). Cash only.~~

EDIT: All pending. Thank you!

[Toronto, ON] [H] Paypal [W] High Core count CPU + MOBO

Hey.

I'm looking for a high core count CPU to decrease compile times for software I'm working on. Right now I have a Ryzen 7 3800XT which runs great, but running compile jobs on all threads renders the system pretty much unusable. I was looking at a 3900X or 3950X, but they would require me to upgrade my mobo anyway as I don't think my current B350 board could handle them. I was looking at X299 boards + CPUs on Ebay but they seem to still fetch insane prices even though the 3950X outperforms them. If you're looking to get rid of an X299 board + CPU (preferably with 14+ cores) or have a 3900X/3950X + Mobo (I prefer to buy combined) please let me know! My budget is around ~5-700 dollars depending on CPU + Mobo, I hope that's not too unreasonable.

Changed CPU, MOBO and RAM. Now I can't play games

Hi, I just upgraded my build with new cpu mobo and ram. It used to be an AMD FX-6100 with 16 gb quad channel ram, now I bought an AMD Ryzen 7 5800x with 16gb dual channel DDR4 and MSI B550.

My system mounts an RX580 as Video Card and a CM 550W PSU.

When I open a game (namely Overwatch) the PC shuts down completely and reboots. I tried swapping MOBO but the problem persists, with an older AMD R7 260 card it doesn't happen but i haven't used it enough to be sure (the game crashes due to too low memory). I'm having troubles debugging this issue, could it be the PSU? Power supply calculator states that 470W should be enough for the system to work, my unit is even bigger. How can I fix?

I also tried what this video says without success.

Thanks a lot.

Gigabyte Z690 Boards use a Non-Standard Audio Implementation. MOBO tier list guy here; Please make sure your current Audio setups work with Gigabyte's z690 audio layout. Also, a brief note on Z690 costs.

EDIT: Now that this has blown up, I want to address a few points. Gigabyte Z690 boards should not be blacklisted or ignored outright because of this. For users who already have external audio setups or use single cable speakers this probably does not matter. Audio is one of those things that is hugely subjective.

There are a ton of different options nowadays, USB, HDMI, external audio amps, internal and external sound cards, headphone amps, and high end DACs on your MOBO. However, some of you will have to plan your audio a little differently, or chose some different options if you go Gigabyte. Keep in mind 3 jack audio has been common on low end MOBOs for years. Still, seeing 2 jacks appear on $400 high end boards was probably going to raise some eyebrows.

Finally, as other users pointed out, external audio options can be a great investment that can last years, and through multiple builds. For those who don't know where to start with audio, a pretty good guide that covers some of these options was posted here last year. /End edit.

Hello, I am author of the A520/B550/X570 tier list from last year. Due some IRL stuff, I had to put the project on hold. Now that stuff is resolved, I am currently working on a massive update, that will make my list a complete tier list for all MOBOs, Intel and AMD. Also, many of your criticisms of my list have been fixed, such as ITX boards, and tweaks have been added.

However, I was crunching to get it done by today for Z690 and like last year's Ryzen 5000 release, I was going to pull an all-nighter to finish. However, last night I discovered that most Gigabyte boards lack traditional audio ports. Since this is going to require a LOT more work, the list is likely to come out Wednesday of next week, instead of today or tomorrow, as I need to find more time to work on it. Also, it gives me time to tweak some other stuff and make sure I am as accurate as possible. Also, hopefully some real world VRM data can come out, and I can use that to make the list better.

So I want to give early adopters a heads up on some things.

This article here sums up the issue. TLDR: Most, but not all, gigabyte z690 boards only have 2 3.5mm audio jacks, furthermore, optical audio users cannot use the 3.5

How can I tell if I have a bad MOBO?

Just built a new Z690 PC with RTX3090, 5600MHz RAM, 12900KF

Something is seriously wrong.

I kept getting memory hardware failures, so I returned my mem sticks and replaced with new ones.
Same issue.

All my drivers are fine, up to date, PC technically runs for abit, but randomly games crash within 30 min saying unhandled exception, memory problems... etc etc.

Randomly I'll get the "NOT LESS OR EQUAL" blue screen.

Sometimes the screen will just go black, making me think it's a GPU issue (but I had this GPU for over a year now with no issues on previous PC)

I really.... REALLY.... really... really don't want to rebuild this damn thing.
Is there some kind of diagnostics I can run on the mobo itself?

It's not like I have another Z690 sitting around to swap out...

Should I just take it in to a PC repair shop and lower my head in shame?
