Libre scientific publishing

I was reading about how the publishing industry exploits the scientists and thought what if there's a way they can publish scientific articles in a libre way. Something like github where they can edit fork it comment that would also modernize the scientific process but also with a reliable way to sign it and track citations (and now the forks) as a way for the scientists to justify their funding. Even better if it's a sort of peer to peer where universities could set servers to hold the bulk of the data but anyone could upload.

Because it's libre. This would ensure this knowledge is owned by all of humanity instead of some greedy publishers abusing it.

Is there any project in that line?

Here is a stallman article about it I found:

https://www.stallman.org/articles/free-scientific-publishing.html

>Many scientists now recognize the harm done by restrictive scientific publishers that control use of the scientific literature. In 2002, the Budapest Open Access Initiative called for applying two principles in scientific publishing: access for everyone at the main publication site, and freedom for everyone to redistribute them as well.
>
>The second principle is stronger. In practice, it gives us the first: if everyone has the freedom to redistribute copies of articles, university libraries will mirror the articles, making them accessible to everyone. However, the term "open access" refers explicitly to the weaker first principle and not to the second. That makes it a weak term.
>
>I had misgivings about the term "open access", seeing as how the advocates of "open source" used the word "open" to downplay the Free Software Movement's concerns about freedom for software users. I put them aside because the substance of the position was correct, and signed the BOAI statement.
>
>Alas, my misgivings have proved valid. Policies advanced today often drop the more important second principle; they talk about accessibility but don't mention the freedom to redistribute them and reuse them in other ways. For instance, a US bill in 2013 proposes gratis access to papers from government-funded research, but fails to require freedom to redistribute. It would be a step forward, but the principal point was dropped, evidently because the campaign was for "open access". A

Not Just an SEC Comment: Nearly exactly 12 years ago to today, in 2009, Overstock CEO called out Jim Cramer and CNBC BY NAME in a press release to all Overstock shareholders. This letter still exists on the Overstock.com website.

TL;DR: Alongside the SEC comments from deepcapture.com on Jim Cramer & Dendreon, Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne publicly called out Jim Cramer and CNBC by name nearly 12 years ago to the day in a press release to all Overstock shareholders.

I'm not the first Superstonker to have found this (I'm pretty sure), but alongside u/missing_the_point's post on Jim Cramer's behavior with regards to Dendreon, I thought this was also relevant. I mentioned this originally in my old Adoboli DD (for the years 2009-2011: https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/mp1m53/gme_player_profile_ubs_naked_shorts_2011s_adoboli/) but Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne PUBLICALLY called out not just Jim Cramer but CNBC & more in a shareholders' letter...THAT YOU CAN STILL READ ON THEIR OVERSTOCK.COM PAGE.

(Nasdaq: OSTK) today announced that Rocker Partners (now known as Copper River Partners) will pay $5 million to Overstock.com to settle Overstock's claims against the remaining defendants in its case against Rocker Partners, David Rocker, Marc Cohodes, and the management companies and hedge funds they controlled and advised. The defendants have agreed to dismiss their cross-complaint against Overstock.com and Patrick Byrne. Below is a letter from Patrick Byrne, the company's Chairman and CEO, commenting on the settlement (see our story at DeepCapture.com for full details).

A philosophical issue with Linux (alternatives?)

Hi, I have been using ArchLinux for quite some time now. It was the first and only distro that I tested and I really like it, especially jumping from Windows. I wish I did this long before.

However, I am facing a problematic issue, that I would like to bring to the table for discussion and suggestions.

I am a scientific researcher and I am supposed to write a conference paper that has a Word template that we need to cope with. The problem is that opening this template in LibreOffice Writer does not render the template correctly (I know that Word is not complying with the ODF standards...), thus I am stuck. It must be added that this conference paper template is provided by the publisher itself (Ernst and Sohn btw).

So, how can we rely on free software if an independent player (E and S) is forcing the usage of payed software? This affects strongly the Linux community IMO, and I am sure that different examples exist.

What should I do? And as a community what should we do?

Donating (or Supporting) Linux Gaming Projects - A Modest Guide 2020+1

This is a modest guide to how you can basically put your money where your mouth is by donating to Linux and non-profit projects that advance the aim of better gaming on Linux: ideally some hard cash but if not, your time. In it I set out to explain each project's importance and really cut through the cruft to get to exactly how you donate.

This has become an annual thing, but reminders are always useful and we've had some... difficult times the past two years. A lot of this has been recycled with some very minor amendments and corrections.

Again, I'll reiterate what I said in the previous guide - if you like what you read here and are thinking of giving it an award, consider instead donating to one of the projects below.

Thanks for your time. If you have any criticisms, suggestions, corrections or recommendations, hit me up (or just post in the thread), and I'll correct and credit accordingly.

Wine (via the Software Freedom Conservancy)

What is it? Wine is a compatibility layer that allows users to run Windows applications in Linux environments. It forms a core part of Valve's Steamplay/Proton solution, as well as providing gamers the means to play Windows games that are no longer compatibile on modern systems.

How can I support them? Wine is assisted by the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), a non-profit organisation that manages earmarked donations to its member projects (of which Wine, Godot and others form a part) and provides various fiscal and administrative services (the full list can be seen here.).

If you want donate to Wine directly, the easiest is to simply go to Wine's donation page. You can also go via the SFC. You'll need to go to the Member Projects Page, and scroll right down to the bottom. Clicking the donate will take you to Paypal where you'll be asked to donate an amount of your choice; you can also set whether it should be monthly but by default it's off.

Donating to the SFC helps all of the projects associated with them, and if you would like to do so you can donate here. Given the role they play in smoothing out the more mundane administrative tasks of running Wine as a n

Whatever happened to spell check?

LitRPG seems to be a genre with a particularly large number of amateur/self-published authors, and I am grateful that so many people are given the opportunity to share their stories with us. For that reason I am often quite willing to overlook a number of writing mistakes that a professional editor would otherwise catch. It's unreasonable for me to expect that the hobbyist author with a day job would spend hundreds or more on what might very well already be a costly project.

But more and more often I see the sort of spelling and grammar mistakes that ought to have been caught by the likes of Microsoft Word 2000. Does modern writing software no longer have such features? Are they being intentionally disabled or ignored because so much of the LitRPG vernacular is so far removed from day-to-day writing? Is there something preventing the authors from copy/pasting their work from their software of choice into something like LibreOffice Writer?

I do understand that not every author can or even should consider spending as much as a professional editor costs, and I can empathize well enough to overlook quite a few writing mistakes, but when it starts to feel like the author doesn't care enough to put forth that minimal spell check effort then it becomes difficult for me as a reader to want to put forth the effort to overlook things.

"Leave MSM Alone! We DiD NoThInG WrOnG On GME NFT RePoRt YoU TiNFoIl ApEs!" Cool. Cool Cool Cool. So let's take off the tinfoil then and take quick looks at this: Peer-reviewed research journal findings on CNBC, Jim Cramer's coverage and how affects underlying stocks & short selling after on-air.

TL;DR:

  • It's not just Dendreon: Research journals from 2000 have looked at CNBC data and found everything from upticks in short sales during "Mad Money" buy recommendations from short sellers (but not by retail investors since retail doesn't usually short)...
  • ...To the fact that CNBC recommendations can impact stock prices, but this happens at its highest for only 15 seconds to a minute after the stock is mentioned on air.
  • An August 2021 report on CNBC's coverage of UOA (unusual options activity) says CNBC's options recommendations aren't very helpful, but the researchers do have some interesting comments on gamma squeezes that you wrinkled apes should look at.

Howdy ya'll. It's your friendly neighborhood throwawaylurker012, done using pinecones as suppositories for today. I decided to keep digging this weekend on more relevant info that's related to MSM's coverage on GME's NFT marketplace (al Qaeda notwithstanding) and found some things of potential merit.

What made me wanna write this was seeing u/cwspellowe's stellar post on Dendreon and how Jim Cramer's recommendations were paramount to market manipulation on that stock: https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/ryyr9x/what_were_seeing_now_is_what_happened_to_dendreon/

The entire post is worth a read and hopefully gives this post below gives some context on what exists regarding just how much it matters that bad faith actors like Cramer, CNBC, and other financial news outlets "word" matters in the grand scheme of market movement and how it can be used by bad faith actors as well. Now close your eyes and let's go to daydreaming that it's some time next week just a few hours after the market just closed and you're done holding the most bestest idiosyncratic stock in the world...and your nipples sink as you hear the subtle sounds nearby of the opening to CNBC's "Mad Money"...

Yes, that's right. Let's begin our journey by looking at some statistical research on our favorite Cokerat, goatee aficionado, and now--apparently--Bath and Bedding Beyond Stan that rivals the fiercest BTS fan:

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Is gentoo-sources realy blob-free?

Hi, so every time an update comes, I pass the FSFLA deblobbing scripts (which leave a log such as this one).

The thing is, the Gentoo wiki says that is not necessary anymore in Gentoo sources. The kernel FAQ also says that blobs are contained in linux-firmware.

Then why the deblobbing scripts still remove things from the main tree? Is it just firmware loading code that do nothing in the absence of linux-firmware?

EDIT: Also, the FSFLA page states: Even after allegedly moving all firmware to a separate project as of release 4.14, Linux so-called "sources" published by Mr Torvalds still contain non-Free firmware disguised as source code.

How to prepare For Finals

Hey everyone My name is Jaymen and I'm a Student/Academic Coach/Tutor at UBC and thought id share some tips to prepare for finals as its that time of year again :DD

A little bit about myself: In grade 9 I failed math 9 and science 9 and was going to drop out of school because I thought I was too dumb for school. But there was a girl I had a crush on and I wanted to impress her so I started learning how to study and how to improve in school, and after a year I raised my average a lot. Over the years I've learned how to study better, and teach other students/clients how to raise their grades as well.

Key Principles:

Its not about the outcome, but the process - Learning the difference between your character and your essence :)) -READ THIS FIRST IF YOU'RE GOING TO READ THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT

here's a simple thought experiment: if a baby was born who would say "wow this baby is such a deadbeat, they have no job and they dont have a perfect gpa". Every single one of us is born more than enough and inherent with value, but somewhere along the line when we grew up, someone, or something convinced us that our character/avatar (our external) defines our value, when that's just not true. Realizing that you character is separate from your actual value is very important to challenging yourself with compassion and empathy. Whether you get a 100% on a final exam or you fail, it does not change your inherent value, its just like your videogame character. If you played a videogame, you can appreciate when you lose levels/are challenged because its not personal. I think its important to make this distinction as a lot of people tie their GPA to their self worth (I was definitely guilty of this) so try to remember that those things are separate and remind yourself of your worth :)) Once you're able to do this you can focus on the process of working hard (rather than trying to just get to an outcome - this is the number one way to burn yourself out).

Managing Mental health/Spirituality

Finding balance between working hard (yang) and resting and chilling (yin) is an essential part of doing well and keeping your mental health in a good position. If you only exclusively chill in our yang centered world you will fall behind, but if you only work you will find yourself burnt out. I find it very helpful to slow down sometimes, do meditations, journal to remind myself of the balance between these two energies. Its like Fire and Water, and if you have too
