Deep crevasses and towering walls of ice within the notorious Khumbu Icefall frequently shift or collapse during the course of an expedition, crushing ladders and ropes. Late in the expedition, this section was completely destroyed, requiring the Icefall Doctors to replace everything. (2016)

Going Through The Khumbu Icefall is Like a Game of Russian Roulette - You don't want to be standing there when a serac crashes down. Photo taken by me in May 2016, at an altitude of about 18,000 feet, Mount Everest, Nepal. I was also there in 2014 when a serac avalanche took the lives of 16.
