Hi I am Cheryl Whiskeyjack, Executive Director of Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society in Edmonton. This Indigenous People’s Day, June 21 from 1pm-2pm, AMA about Bent Arrow or Indigenous Culture.

Hi Friends,

I am looking forward to doing this AMA with r/Edmonton. Please feel free to start asking questions, I will be here June 21st from 1pm-2pm answering anything you want to know about Bent Arrow or Indigenous Culture!

A bit about Bent Arrow

Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society has been serving children, youth and families in Edmonton and area since 1994. Bent Arrow has grown to offer 20 plus programs and services across Edmonton. Including: Housing, Employment Services, Teaching Indigenous Culture, Child Services, Youth Mentoring, Men’s Groups, programming for all ages, services for people new to Edmonton and a whole lot more! Today Bent Arrow has over 250 employees serving Edmonton.

Our founders believed strongly that keeping culture at the center was crucial and that this important work was best done in partnership. We have developed strong partnerships with many and are proud to see that culture continues to play a central role in our practice. We also support many partners in elevating their capacity to serve the indigenous community in a culturally relevant, authentic and sincere way.

You can view all our programs here

On Indigenous Culture

I am so very proud to be Indigenous, the connection to those around me, those who came before me, and those who will come after me. I love our art, music, spirituality, family, and traditions. I am blessed and honoured to be able to answer any questions you have for me today about the amazing culture I am a part of.

A bit about me

I began my career in 1995 as a Youth Worker with Bent Arrow in Edmonton and have been here ever since. I believe it is important to connect people with their culture so they know they belong. I look to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous people. At my core, I’m a helper that strives to affect positive change where I can. Today, I look forward to answering your questions whether they be about the work Bent Arrow does or the beautiful world of Indigenous culture.

Please throw your questions at me r/Edmonton and lets celebrate Indigenous People on Indigenous People’s Day!

Communications Coordinator addition: Cheryl was awarded an Honourary Doctor of Laws this spring from the University of Alberta this year! She is far too humble to talk about it, so I will.

Update Alright we are done for the day. Thank you everyone for the quest

How do we help our Indigenous students to feel supported in class? How do we best acquaint all our students with Indigenous history, culture, and issues?

I wanted to write this post off the back of other posts about teaching Australian history and dealing with racism in the classroom. I am in the fortunate position to have worked with many Indigenous students over the last decade, and to have done so in schools that made it a priority to make them feel valued and heard, while ensuring our non-Indigenous students learned about Indigenous issues in a way that felt natural. So here are a few tips I have, and I’d love to hear more (my experience is in teaching in city, secondary settings fwiw):

  • connect with local elders. Get their perspectives on curriculum. Ask them to speak to your students. Pay them for their time.
  • do not force students to sing the national anthem.
  • study Indigenous history, both traditional and contemporary. It’s not all about the Gold Rush. Who was Pemulwuy? Who was Truganini? Look it up!
  • don’t just focus on Indigenous suffering, but also on Indigenous excellence. There are of course many great examples in sport (and kids love sport!) but look beyond to the arts, politics, science, and activism too.
  • give your Indigenous students a heads up before teaching hard topics like the Stolen Generation. Get their thoughts. Give them the option to work on something else if they’d like.
  • study Indigenous art. Look at traditional art but also study contemporary art and film ie Richard Bell, Aretha Brown, Tracey Moffatt.
  • acknowledge country at events.
  • be conscious of language. Captain Cook didn’t β€˜discover’ Australia.
  • Study writing from Indigenous authors
  • decorate your classroom. If you’re displaying and Australian flag, have an Aboriginal flag and a Torres Strait Islander flag up too. Have maps of language groups, posters for NAIDOC etc.
  • at our school we had Indigenous teachers and cultural workers. I understand this isn’t possible everywhere but that’s a shame, as it made a difference to our students.

This list is just a start! What other ideas do you have?

[TOMT][BOOK][2000s?] An indigenous girl faces assimilation to American culture

A child-level book, something that one would read in elementary or middle school.

A Native American girl faces assimilation to American culture. Possibly sent to a residential school. I think there was a major plot point where she had to decide if she were going to stay back in the colony/settlement/residential school or if she were to go back to her tribe where they were experiencing issues (drought? starvation?)

I believe the cover/spine was purple. I think she was looking out a window and her hair half in a native style and half in an Anglo style. There may have been someone doing her hair.

I've found My Heart is on the Ground but I don't think that's it.

Brazil continues to lose an entire generation of Indigenous elders and leaders to COVID-19, leading to a loss of culture and history

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 89%. (I'm a bot)

> There have been 54,622 confirmed COVID-19 cases among Indigenous people in Brazil, according to monitoring by the Instituto Socioambiental, a Brazilian NGO that advocates for Indigenous and environmental rights.

> There were nearly 818,000 Indigenous people in Brazil in 2010, according to the national census that year.

> Data from the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, the country's biggest Indigenous organization, reported that in December of last year the mortality rate among Indigenous people was 16% higher than among non-Indigenous Brazilians.

> At the same time, there has been a legacy of neglect in basic health care and rights for Indigenous people; the colonization of Brazil was marked by physical and biological violence.

> The highest toll has been among unidentified Indigenous peoples, with 427 victims, and the second-highest among the Xavante of Mato Grosso state, with 79 deaths.

> "Most of the Indigenous people who were hospitalized and died of COVID-19 suffered from comorbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases - clear evidence of poor basic health services," he said.

Should we document the priceless wisdom of indigenous cultures?

Hello all,

I am a travel writer who has been documenting indigenous cultures, ethnic minorities and dying languages for the last 5 years. My passion and thirst for knowledge has taken me to 32 countries and 22 Indian states.

What I have observed is that we are trying to document and preserve the visual aspects of endangered cultures - attires, architecture, art, cuisines etc. Not enough impetus is given to the invisible aspects of a culture that is centuries-old wisdom and stories.

Should we put more effort in understanding ancient wisdom hiding in remote corners of the world? What are the best ways to do so?

I've read that Cortez needed an excuse legally and morally justify arresting Montezuma and conquering the Aztecs, because he was of noble birth and they were a sovereign state. This seems to be more deference than Europeans gave to other indigenous cultures, at least in the Americas. Why was this?

Does this have more to do with the Aztec civilization impressing the Spanish with their cities and strong government (causing the Spanish to consider them more "legitimate" than tribal societies), how the Spanish treated locals compared to how other European powers did, or simply my own misconceptions about how these things usually went? Is there any comparison to how Europeans treated the "legitimacy" of other strong but non-christian governments such as in the Muslim world or Asia?

I most recently read this in a post by u/Tlahuizcalpantecutli, so maybe they can shed more light.

Is scholarly literature on Indigenous culture, history, art, and language out of reach from Indigenous communities? What can be done to change that?

I was looking over some Indigenous reading lists and noticed that many of the books were only available as hard cover copies on Amazon, with rising retail prices as the books fall out of print. Once out of print, copies of books can surge to hundreds of dollars.

This means that the cultural record gets locked away in university libraries, inaccessible to the people it's about, and for.

I have an idea about how to change that, but I'd like to understand people's sense of the problem, since I haven't found any articles about the issue of access to literature yet.

  • Have you encountered mention or citations of literature on Indigenous history/culture that you simply couldn't get access to?
  • How did this affect your search for information? Did you find it elsewhere?
  • General ideas welcome and appreciated.

Opinion from Ryerson Profs in National Post: Egerton Ryerson has been falsely accused of trying to erase Indigenous culture

Some interesting food for thought in light of the ongoing debate about the legacy of Egerton Ryerson.

From the article:

"... Ryerson is being misjudged. He was not a racist and he did not discriminate against Indigenous people. It was the exact opposite! As a young man he was appointed to the Credit mission, home of the Mississaugas. He learned their language, worked in the fields with the people of the settlement and became a life-long friend of future chief Kahkewaquonaby (Sacred Feathers), known in English as Peter Jones.

In fact, it was in recognition of his services to the Mississauga, that Ryerson was adopted and given the name of a recently deceased chief, "Cheechock" or "Chechalk."

After he left the Credit mission, Ryerson kept in touch with Peter Jones. In the 1830s he assisted the Mississaugas, whose land was confiscated by colonial authorities, by approaching Queen Victoria personally through back channels. He also advanced the careers of a number of talented Indigenous individuals. When Peter Jones was gravely ill at the end of his life, he stayed in the comfortable home of his old friend Ryerson in Toronto. Ryerson was a friend of Indigenous people...."

SHAMAN is an ever-growing project with an amazing and transparent (doxxed) dev team, aggressive marketing plan, and a positive/dedicated community growing by the day. SHAMAN COIN

🌳Record, Preserve, and receive Rewards with Shaman Coin 🌳

Launching: Once Telegram hits 2000 members

Utility token with incredible real-world application! Launching soon!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

🌏🌎🌍The Shaman Coin is the only utility token with the sustainability of human culture at its core to ensure long-term growth and increase in value. Shaman aims to simultaneously preserve indigenous knowledge and protect existing indigenous cultures (while also providing significant investor value) through a two-pronged approach: Charity and the creating economic incentive for the preservation of indigenous knowledge 🌏🌎🌍

Charity: This token will first directly benefit indigenous peoples around the world by collecting a percentage of each transaction that will be auto-converted to Binance Coin ($BNB) and stored in a publicly known charity wallet. Community members will vote on a list of pre-approved charities to receive donations.

NFT Preservation: Beyond the charitable function, Shaman Coin holders will be incentivized to explore, discover and record information on familiar indigenous cultures. This information will be vetted and minted into an NFT, forever preserved on the blockchain. Finally, Shaman Coin holders who participate in and contribute to the NFT database program will be rewarded in Shaman Coin. The aim is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides a continuous economic incentive to the preservation of indigenous identity, knowledge, and culture.

Although the first of these NFTs will be listed on AirNFT, a native NFT Marketplace as well as the Shamanpedia DApp will be released that will allow community members to submit their research, purchase NFTs, and browse the entire catalog of existing indigenous-knowledge NFTs.
