A list of puns related to "Indian Tamils Of Sri Lanka"
The group already controlled a large chunk of the north and east of the island at the peak of their power but then eventually lost it all when the army crushed them. What if somehow the Sri Lankan state gave up and recognized the Tigersโ sovereignty of their claimed territories?
I recently came across a trailer for a Tamil movie which is all about how Prabakaran was the hero who was born to free Tamils. (The movie trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzAuLa_StqU)
I also found lots of posts & videos from Tamil youths in India, U.K, Canada, etc. talking about how Prabakran & LTTE were these amazing people who did nothing wrong. These guys don't even live in SL, where are they getting their information form? Some of these are kids who would have been toddlers when war ended, even they seem to have strong opinions & support for LTTE. Is that how LTTE is portrait in media outside of SL?
I don't know this is the right sub but not sure where else I can post. Disclaimer: this is an extremely sensitive topic with no right or perfect answers.
Srilankan civil war is one topic which I couldn't discuss with anyone across the world. Most people don't know and don't care and just love Sri Lanka so much they don't want to look deep into the issues. Among Indians, I couldn't talk to anyone about this openly as ltte assassinated an Indian PM and it meant anyone having alternate views are terrorists sympathizers. Also being be Tamilians my views were always considered biased.
Coming to the topic, Sri Lankan treatment of Tamils since the 50s were atrocious and every decade the violence always erupted. Especially countries like India where the freedom struggle and win was relatively violence free, we always feel everyone should take the non violence route without knowing the ground realities of ethnocide, genocide which happens across the world. LTTE was the organization which had army, naval and air borne units to fight the SL nation and wanted a piece of the country as their own where they aren't governed by the oppressive govt. Ltte is known to have targeted civilians and used child and women soldiers and suicide bombers so much they were designated as terror organization by 30 odd countries including India. SL army is accused of systematic torture, rape, bombing and ethno cleansing of the tamils in the region and has repeatedly refused any independent investigation on these claims. India sent its peace corp to SL too in the late 80s and reports of rape, torture and war crimes were allegedly committed by them too.
Obviously I am not asking we take sides of LTTE or SL here, but we can still look at the conflict in neutral eye and see violent uprising is sometimes an inevitable consequence in most civil wars. Whether a Gandhi will be born out of conflict or a Che Guevara is something no one can predict. We can create various best case scenarios of how the tamils should have handled it better at the comfort of our homes but on ground realties are unimaginable. Of course, this applies to the kashmir conflict, taliban, Vietnam War, afghan war, Korean War etc as well. We can all chose one side for the greater good and larger peace at the expense of the lives of the smaller group.
The Civil War ended in 2009 with the SL army taking control of all the regions. We saw horrifying images of atrocious violence from both sides. We saw the army executing kid
