So, yeah. I'm looking for a nickname for Dolores to get called in her Hogwarts years. The obvious would be 'Dolly', but that sounds far too American. Tried googling and found some possibilities, but I couldn't find anything to suggest what might actually be appropriate for the 70s/80s UK.
Inspired by a /r/soccer thread. Certain cultures or languages have diminutive forms of a name. For example, in Russia, a person named Alexandr can be called Sasha. Or Mikhail can be called Misha. Do we have something similar in Somali?

I was already aware of this practice but its only today I learnt that there is actually a name for this and its HYPOCORISM and that some Swedish university did a detailed study on it. And that's its not randomly picked but is a result of some rules.

I've heard 'familiarize' used this way ("do not familiarize my name") but I haven't found an example online of it.
Hypocorism (noun) - pet-name; diminutive or abbreviated name
For sociolinguistics I need to collect data for and write an informal research report. As I'm Australian, I thought something to do with hypocorism in AusE would be interesting. Does anyone have any ideas about particular directions I could go with this? I was thinking differences in hypocorism between genders. Also, how would I go about eliciting this kind of information from study participants? Sorry about the convoluted post. Any help much appreciated!
There is a taqueria nearby that is called El Chepo. I'm trying to figure out the most likely translation or meaning for Chepo. It seems like there are multiple meanings and some slang. To any native Mexicans, what does Chepo most likely mean?

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
