Newark Earthworks and Hopewell Tradition

The Newark Earthworks are the largest complex of geometric earthworks in the world. Built more than 2,000 years ago by the indigenous American Indian culture known to archaeologists as the Hopewell, these earthworks encode a sophisticated understanding of geometry, astronomy, and features of the local landscape into this uncanny architecture. Much of the Newark Earthworks has been destroyed by agriculture and urban development, but two major elements of this massive earthen composition remain today - the Great Circle and the Octagon Earthworks. Join Brad Lepper, Curator of Archaeology for the Ohio Historical Society, and Richard Shiels, historian and Director of the Ohio State University's Newark Earthworks Center, for a discussion of what we know about these magnificent monuments and the culture that built them, how they came to be preserved, and current efforts to inscribe the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, including the Newark Earthworks, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

For those unfamiliar with the topic, some basic information and short educational videos can be found at Ancient Ohio Trail: Newark Earthworks and the Ohio Archaeology Blog.

We look forward to your questions!

The Newark Earthworks AMA is now closed. Thanks to everyone for your great questions!

Hopewell Mound-Builders of North America | Book of Mormon Evidence Debunking

Hello all, I'm a North American archaeologist specializing in Native American prehistory. I have never been a Mormon, but my high-school history teacher was (and still is). My class was taught a completely revisionist view of history, especially in the small amount of time dedicated to native history. We were told places like Cahokia didn't have any evidence of being built by Indigenous peoples (this isn't true) and that the moundbuilders were likely a white race massacred by Indigenous groups. I knew this wasn't true even at the time, and was given a failing grade for speaking out against this. However, these interactions did help define the path I wanted to take in life. I still think of all the other kids who went through the school system who were unknowingly indoctrinated. I recently came across a YouTube video with over 100k+ views called "Hopewell Mound-Builders of North America | Book of Mormon Evidence". It's well liked, and many in the comments are convinced. I thought I'd use some of my expertise to look at the evidence he presents and see if it holds up. I dedicate this post to my high-school history teacher.

1.Scholors dismiss evidence that anyone from the Old World was here prior to Columbus because they're stubborn and want to cling to the old view. First of all, not a great place to begin showing us evidence. If your first bit of evidence is that people who dedicate their lives to studying a subject find things that support your claim are fake, it's not a good look for your argument. Funnily enough, this isn't even true. When the site of L'Anse aux Meadows was discovered and researched, archaeologists realized the Norse were in North Americas well before Columbus. This is now a known and well established fact. I also want to point out this is what evidence of such a thing looks like. To support even a small population, we need houses, artifacts, farmland, blacksmiths, etc. We didn't just find a random Viking runestone in a field or something. We found a small town, something any Old World group would have needed to settle here. Because all artifacts need to have came from somewhere. That's one thing many of these supposed "scholarly rejected pieces" are missing. It's just a tablet some dude said he found in his field. In the rare case they actually let an archaeologist survey the area, nothing is

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
