Big, at least crow sized
Dark head and back with fluffy pale gray breast
Very long, thin tail feather β my first thought was a juvenile California scrub jay, but the head is shaped differently
Large, βspikyβ head like a kingfisherβs, with a similarly shaped but shorter bill
Sighted perching on a wire for a moment before taking off
The closest match Iβve found so far is the eastern kingbird; however, this bird had a larger head and much longer and thinner tail feathers. Any ideas? I know text based ID is not ideal.
I hiked Hale today. At the top me and my girlfriend saw a guy feed one of the Jay's and obviously it was really cool to see and we wanted to give it a try. After successfully feeding them we started to wonder whether or not people should be feeding them. I just did a quick google search and found some conflicting answers and I wanted to see what you all had to say.
I think proper LNT would be to not feed them, but I'm not sure if there is any actual harm. Thanks for the information!
