A list of puns related to "Garner's Modern American Usage"
Anyone know if a 4th edition is forthcoming? I have the 2nd edition from 2001 and am wondering if it's worth buying the 2011 3rd edition. If there is a new version coming out soon or the third edition does not add much to the second then I'm probably fine without the third edition. Any thoughts appreciated.
LOL began as an acronym used purely in written form, standing for Laugh Out Loud, to indicate a reaction to humor. However, I increasingly see another usage for the term which has made its way into actual speech even either as /lΙΛl/ or /Ιl oΚ Ιl/.
This new meaning is added onto the ends of phrases and is used simply to indicate casual speech as far as I can tell by my own usage. For instance, when talking to a friend, one could say or write "I'm bored lol." Obviously, they aren't laughing about being bored, but rather it's setting the context of this speech as being "friendlier" or something.
I find this to be an interesting development as I've now heard people using it in speech rather than just texting, so I'm interested in if there's a term for words and phrases that have this sort of functionality, setting the context of the sentence as more casual.
For an essay in which I need to analyze historians' opinions on a controversial event in history, I'm looking for a reliable secondary source to cite that argues that the usage of the atomic bomb was not morally acceptable and/or militarily necessary. The instructor requires one secondary source for each side of the argument, but I already have a secondary source arguing in favor of the bomb.
So I'm currently in the process of sifting through JSTOR (any database will work I guess, I'm just more familiar with JSTOR) for a secondary source, and just figured that I'd ask first to see if any of you are familiar with a good secondary source.
While primary sources are nice for citing extra information, the instructor specifically wants the majority of the essay to be based on the arguments presented in secondary sources, which leaves me a bit stumped, as I've always found it easier to find primary sources. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It really helped my performance. Getting a steady 90-100 FPS now!*****
Greetings everyone, I've decided to join the world of Tarkov and PC gaming! Pretty stoked about that! Managed to score an EVGA 3060Ti FTW3 a couple days ago and built a PC right away. I've been enjoying the game so far. Just started yesterday and I must say I feel like I'm in way over my head. There is so much to learn and know in this game. I have just been playing offline so far because im afraid to lose the gear I recieved in the standard edition by dying foolishly while having no clue what I'm doing! I've just been testing the combat mechanics and I am thrilled with this game. It's incredible. Looking forward to getting my PC dialed in.
My specs are;
Ryzen 5 5600x - using stock wraith cooler
RTX 3060Ti
32gb 3200 ddr4 ram
Msi b550 gaming plus mobo
Evga 750w g6 PSU
MSI Optix G271 1080p monitor
Not having much experience building and operating PCs, I am surprised I did as well as I did with a friend helping me over the phone. Everything went well during the build, however I am concerned that I am not getting maximum usage of my components.
For some reason my GPU and CPU average at 40% usage fluctuating between 30-50% with GPU temp averaging 55Β° C, and cpu between 60-65Β° C. The weird part is that my FPS is only around 65-80 sometimes 90+ depending on the map, but I have a cap at 120. Does anyone know why I am not achieving full usage of my components yet my frame rate seems to be limited? I've been looking online and it seems people with the same CPU and GPU or similar are getting much better performance than I am.
If anyone could share their experiences with the same or similar hardware or provide some insight as to what is happening so I can begin to mitigate this I would greatly appreciate it.
Also some crucial knowledge for a new Tarkov player would be appreciated too. Although I'll have to admit that not having my hardware performing as I feel it should is currently cutting into my enjoyment of the game.
I would also like to add that I have yet to perform any sort of of overclocking on my system, as I am not yet knowledgeable in that area.
Any help or wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I would also be interested in getting together to play this incredible and mindblowing game!
Thank you for your time!
The title is the whole question.
Thank you in advance.
This seems appropriate here. PBS special on American healthcare disparity despite it being the riches country in the world. Itβs poor continues to suffer at all angles. https://youtu.be/BytzrjEfyfA
"Yes, Queen! Slay!"
"You are so right, Queen!"
It's not life-ruining, or crippling in any way, it's just a pet peeve of mine. "Queen," in my mind, implies that one is inherently better than everyone else because of the way they were born, or with some arbitrary trait they were born with. I understand why it's being used, and I understand how it got to that point, and in an ideal world, humans shouldn't need to adapt titles of royalty to lift themselves up due to centuries of persecution and oppression. But this world isn't ideal. I just can't help but think "You are not better than me!" Everytime I hear that used in that very specific way. Really, it says more about my own insecurities, but also I don't even like being called "Queen," because I'm not better than anyone else either, so...idk. I should probably just take the compliment and fuck off lol
Hello everyone. As a non-native English speaker, I'm currently trying to learn something more about AAE and its features, so that I can provide some examples in a presentation I'm going to make. I'm particularly interested in the use of the zero copula (absence of "is" and "are") and multiple negatives.
Can you think of any scene from movies/TV series, celebrity interviews, or even songs that may help me with this?
EDIT: Thank you all for your support! Lots of precious material and some interesting points of view in the comments, I'll gladly look at all of your suggestions!
I'm from America and I just realized, how come I've never heard anything about Europeans lifestlye before all the castles and houses and roads and stuff.
What was their life like before civilization, when they were in predicaments similar to Native Americans or the tribes of Africa?
I tried searching this up but all that comes up is stuff on Native Americans.
I also have another mini question. Is the United States the country with the fewest amount of natives living there?
Almost everybody in this country is from europe, africa, south america, or asia.
I have only seen people with clear Native American descent maybe once or twice.
And never actually met a full-blooded Native American who is living within that culture, since most of them are on the west coast and in their tiny designated areas.
But yeah, I just randomly had those 2 questions and figured I'd come on here to ask.
During the American Civil War, when the Northern Union and the Southern Confederacy were at war over whether or not the United States government had the power to ban slavery in the territories that had not yet become states, bloodshed was common. Now, we tear down the statues remembering our history, dooming ourselves to forget it, and eventually repeat it. Both sides, the States and the Confederacy, had rejected the standard use of armor as metal was needed to make cannonballs and bullets. Some soldiers bought basic armor from peddlers, mainly iron and steel breastplates. The success of these armors vary. Some would deflect enemy fire to save the wearer's life, others were poorly made and tragically failed, costing the wearer their life. In both instances, many soldiers abandoned the practice, both because it was heavy on long marches and because their fellow soldiers regarded them as cowards.
Modern uses of armor is in many places, but here are the most prominent. Maille is used by butchers to prevent cuts, and bodysuits of it are used when diving with sharks to prevent injury. Here's a simpler way to prevent injury by shark: DON'T SWIM WITH SHARKS. Some people also use it for slash resistant body armor.
Ballistic vests, made of cut resistant fabrics with metal or ceramic plates sewn into the fabric, are modernized versions of medieval armors like lamellar.
>"The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year two years by the People of the several each States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite required for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature."
Right, so this may not seem like a crazy idea at first. Probably you're thinking, "Why would we bother?" Or, "How could we even have a conversation about this given the radical political polarization in this country?"
Well something to keep in mind is that the constitution is a very old document, and its only getting older. As Americans, we are both governed by and the caretakers of that document (in the sense of the ideas more so than the actual parchment), and as we become more removed from its authorship in time it has become ever more difficult for the average person to read it and make sense of it. Had it been written a few hundred years earlier it would have been in Middle English and we would literally need translations into modern English to be able to read it. Of course, the problem with any translation is that the specific meanings intended by the original author can be skewed or misrepresented by the translator. We would also end up with many different competing translations (i.e. similar to the many translations of the Bible). This is clearly not good, as the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution to render legal verdicts, and as the Constitution requires more and more formal training to be able to read, less and less of the general population will be able to read it and have an informed opinion about the decisions made by the Court.
So what I'm proposing is a Constitutional Amendment to update the text of the original and make other administrative changes as necessary to maintain the readability of the document to average citizens. We're probably well overdue for this (ideally every generation would update it) but it just hasn't been on anyone's to-do list (that I know of).
I believe this will do two main things: It will allow citizens all over the country to have an opinion as to the changes, and thus greatly increase people's knowledge of the Constitution, and it will create a debate and discourse about the Constitution which will allow citizens to actually take responsibility for the document (and therefore own it), rather than seeing it as something that has always existed and governs their lives.
So what about the divisive stuff?
... keep reading on reddit β‘Nothing sells a product or platform like the idea of apocalypse. Evangelical churches always act like the rapture and second coming is a few years away at most; a Pew study showed that 40% of Americans think the literal second coming will take place by 2050^(1). So many popular movies, TV shows, video games, books, etc. are centered around the idea of apocalypses, civil collapse, and dystopian takeovers. Right wing news outlets like Fox have been fearmongering about civil war for decades, but now even the "left" wing ones are joining in.
A lot of this is obviously because society is at a deeply precarious position and people have anxiety about it, but that doesn't explain how weirdly... gleeful? folks are about it. Basically any right wing social media you could find online will be full of people fantasizing about executing liberals, but you see it even outside of a political sense. People fantasize about what they'd do in a Mad Max situation or zombie apocalypse all the time, even on forums like this.
Why is the US, a country which hasn't seen genuinely bad times (famine, civil war, plague, etc.) in living memory so obsessed with the idea? It doesn't seem like an idea that the media would actively want to promote, considering collapse tends to be bad for most sectors of the economy. Even if the system is so broken as to not be able to prevent an inevitable collapse, surely it would try to encourage paranoia & fear of it so as to prolong its own control as long as possible?
