[WTS] Ancient silver and bronze coins from the Roman and Byzantine empires! Justinian, Gallienus, Caracalla, Constantine, and more. Priced at $25 and up!

I have a nice group of ancients for sale today. They all come from reputable auction houses like CNG and Nomos. I’ll separate them by denomination:

Denarius

  • Caracalla β€œLimes” Denarius: This is an interesting and unusual piece. It is a denarius struck in bronze instead of silver. No one is sure why these were made, but one theory is that these were paid to soldiers on the Roman frontiers with the promise that they could later be exchanged for silver coins. This one has nice patina and great detail on both sides. VF. Circa 210 AD; 2.35g; 19.5mm diameter. PICS $50

  • Elagabalus Denarius: An attractive silver denarius of the infamous emperor. With LAETITIA PUBL reverse type. VF. Rome mint. Circa 218-222 AD; 2.55g; 18mm diameter. PICS $55 SOLD

Antoninianus

  • Trajan Decius: A lovely silver antoninianus with an excellent portrait of Decius. The ADVENTVS AVG reverse celebrates the emperor’s first arrival in Rome and is struck with worn dies, which is typical. EF. Rome mint. 250 AD; 4.25g, 22.2mm diameter. PICS $55 SOLD

  • Gallienus silver: A nice antoninianus from the early part of Gallienus’ reign, before the denomination was debased completely. Rome mint. Good VF. Rome mint. Circa 256 AD; 2.42g; 21mm diameter. PICS $40

  • ”Gallienus’ Zoo”: A later debased antoninianus, from when the emperor issued his famous β€œZoo” series featuring a variety of real and mythical creatures. This one features a goat on the reverse. EF. Rome mint. Circa 265 AD; 2.5g; 21.5mm diameter. PICS $60

  • Probus: A very attractive and heavy piece with a distinctive β€œeastern” style. VF. Antioch mint. Circa 176-182 AD; 4.5g; 21mm diameter. PICS $50

  • Diocletian: A beautiful antoninianus from before Diolectian’s monetary reforms. Features a great portrait and lovely brown patina. Lugdunum mint. Graded β€œnear EF” by CNG. Circa 295 AD; 3.92g; 22.5mm diameter. PICS $95 SOLD

Follis (Roman)

  • Maximian: A hefty early follis from one of the tetrarchs. Some corrosion, but a nice green patina. Reverse features Moneta, personification of money, to celebrate the currency reform. Near VF. Rome mint. Circa 302 AD; 9.2g; 26.8mm diameter. PICS $35

  • Galeria Valeria: a

Why did Gallienus let Valerian stay in captivity in Persia?

In 260 the king of Persia Shapur i defeated the Romans in the battle of Edessa and captured the Roman Emperor Valerian. There are a lot of writings about what happened to Valerian after this but most agree that he was held in captivity, so why did his son Gallienus who was also Emperor allow this? Could he not demand him back or pay a ransom?

Why was Gallienus perceived unfavourably by Roman historians?

I was reading about the reign of Gallienus during the crisis of the 3rd century and found out that he was not viewed positively by romans who wrote about him, supposedly because under his reign the empire lost land to the breakaway states of the β€œGallic Empire” in the west and the β€œPalmyrene Empire” in the east. However I don’t understand why Gallienus is to blame for this. In the context of the era, Gallienus was constantly running around one end of the empire having to simultaneously fight off massive barbarian invasions and put down innumerable usurpers, the whole state was in shambles and the empire almost looked like it was on its last legs. Yet Gallienus managed to hold on by the skin of his teeth. I find it odd that even after already helping save Rome from multiple possible disasters, he was criticised because two of the dozens of usurpers managed to break away. I think he did pretty well considering everything he was up against. So why didn’t the Romans take this into account?
