The French Republic requested US intervention in the War of the First Coalition. What exactly were they expecting them to do?
Ambassador Edmond Charles Genet attempted to raise militias of sympathetic Americans to fight in the War of the First Coalition and even met with George Washington to request the US side with the French Republic against it's European enemies. Washington rebuked Genet's attempts and proclaimed the United States to be neutral in the conflict in Europe on April 22 1793.
What exactly was Ambassador Genet expecting the US to do? it was a new nation with no permanent navy, a small army and had just come out of the American Revolution, so what exactly could the US have contributed to the War of the First Coalition?

In 1799, St. Donatian's Cathedral in Bruges was demolished by the occupying forces of the French First Republic. How traumatic would it be for a community to see the building that stood at the heart of religious life getting destroyed like this?
To clarify a bit more, I am not just referring to actually destruction but also the extinction of religious organisations. The French Revolution and the English Dissolution of Monasteries are the two examples that spring to mind.

Why did the masses want a republic in the French Revolution in the first place?
Before the French Revolution, when a state was faced with social-economic problems such as famine, usually, it would be followed by a peasant revolt that demanded better treatment, or, a pretender from a rival noble family of the established dynasty using the outraged masses as a tool to overthrow the king. But this was not the case in the French Revolution, for instead of a simple huge peasant revolt it was a revolution that was first of it's kind that torn the entire old order. Why is that? If we looked at the situation of Europe at the time, it seemed that the republics like Venice and the Netherlands weren't doing well at all compared to their absolutist counterparts(Except for France of course), so why is that amidst the states of enlightened of absolutism, republicanism became so widespread to the masses when it was such a new concept for most of the French at the time, and that the French Revolution was what it was, and not the aforementioned usual peasant revolt or pretender rebellion?

Could Rhine Germans vote in the French First Republic?
During the period of the French Revolution, the First Republic annexed a significant area of the Rhineland in an effort to approach their "natural borders." This area would've contained a very large population of Germans, so my question is: Could these Germans vote? Did they have any representation in the National Assembly? Did they ever vote in politicians who opposed their annexation into France?
Thanks!

Who were the clockmakers tasked with implementing the decimal time system during the First French Republic?
I know the Revolutionary Government installed a new calendar and time system during the French Revolution, but I wanted to get a handle on exactly how this was implemented.
Were the clockmakers tasked with constructing new decimal timepieces established professionals? What was their relationship to lβAncien Regime? To the new Revolutionary government? Were they targeted during either the Terror or the Thermidorian backlash? And, in general, who were these men? What was their class position?
Finally, how many of these clocks were actually built? I canβt imagine very many- considering the short period of time the decimal system was actually in place.
Thanks!

What was the international reaction to the first non-feudal/republic countries in the world (i.e. the American and French revolutions)?
I'm very interested in the various systems of government and society that have been popular throughout history: tribalism, feudalism, democracy/capitalism, and the transitions between them.
I'm interested if there are any newspaper articles, letters, books, etc. that discussed these revolutions and new systems of governance. What was the overall reaction (criticisms and praises) to what would become our current system of governance?

While the rebellion and its consequences had a sizeable impact on the region at the time, is it still considered a major part of the identity of people living there? What it says on the tin, really. While the rebellion and its consequences had a sizeable impact on the region at the time, is it still considered a major part of that region's identity? Has it been largely ignored in the generations since? Does the population and regional disruption it caused still effect western France today?

Why did the red and blue switch positions on the French flag in the transition from the French Kingdom to the First Republic in the 1790s?
The flag of the French Kingdom has red on the left and blue on the right with white in the center. The Flag of the First Republic has the blue on the left and red on the right.
What is the significance? How was the decision arrived at and was there any controversy over the change?

How representative and democratic were the governments of the French First Republic and the ensuing empire?
In my readings about France at the turn of the 19th century I keep seeing or feeling something different about the way French representative government worked in this time period in comparison to American or British representative government. These Anglophone governments had traditions of moderate reform, but the French Revolution seems much more explosive and reactionary.
So I guess that last bit reveals the lens through which I am asking this question; I have studied the American and British political systems a fair amount, so I keep thinking "What was the First Republic and First Empire government like compared to its American and British counterparts?" I know that this is faulty thinking for a historian, and that these French governments should be studied on its own characteristics, but for someone like me who is pretty uninformed, I would really appreciate a bridge to get from A to B, if you get what I'm saying.
Thanks in advance (to everyone who helps make this sub great, really.)
