A list of puns related to "Folic"
Disclaimer: NOT A DOCTOR, but I'm trying to save some of you some of the confusion / frustration I've experienced.
I've been on Lamictal for almost seven years now. I've had ups and downs with it, but my experience, on the whole, has been positive.
I just wanted to make you all aware of some stuff I have just recently found out the hard way.
Paracetamol/acetaminophen (in the states, sold as tylenol) lowers your lamictal dosage by about 20% when taken together.
The sample size for these two studies was small, and only on (cis?) men; the first was in the nineties and the second was in the last five years. But both found that acetaminophen administered alongside lamictal resulted "in a 20% decrease in total systemic exposure"
For someone who has to take tylenol once when they have a headache, or who is on a higher dose of lamictal, I'm sure it's fine. But I'm only on 200 mg (aka the bare therapeutic dose); I usually take advil but had to switch to tylenol in the wake of surgery... and had my first hypomanic episode in five years. I didn't make the connection at all at the time, I was kicking myself for not managing my mental health better. When I realized it was likely the tylenol, I broke down in tears.
Again, the sample sizes on these studies was very small. But if you have the choice between tylenol and something else, or if it's a painkiller you'll be taking round the clock for a few days... maybe opt for something else?
And, folic acid (vitamin b9) seems to essentially cancel out lamotrigine's impact.
This was discovered by accident during a study done in the UK that was examining quetiapine and lamotrigine used together as treatment. This study had a wider sample size than the tylenol one.
From what I could find, there haven't been any followup studies by other groups. The same group that conducted the study conducted an analysis on their findings. What's interesting is that "lamotrigine levels at 12Β weeks did not differ between the FAβpositive and FAβnegative groups", aka the folic acid didn't tamper with the levels of lamictal in the body. This followup expounds on the mechanisms they think may be behind the interaction, and it's a lot of science st
... keep reading on reddit β‘In the past, around 3 years ago, Iβve had B12 deficiency anemia, along with low folic acid levels. After a few injections of B12, that issue sorted itself out. Today, however, when I got my blood tests back I have folate-deficiency anemia, but my B12 is fine. Does this seem normal to you?
People should understand that supplementation with Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid (two ingredients very common in sports energy drinks) is associated with a higher risk of overall cancer [171 (13.6%) vs. 143 (11.3%); HR 1.25; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.00β1.53, P = 0.05]. B vitamins were significantly associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer [43(3.4%) vs. 25(2.0%); HR 1.77; 95% CI, 1.08β2.90, P = 0.02].
Folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation was associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Supplements are not benign. Be careful about what you put in your body.
Iβm wondering how long it takes to determine which auto immune disease it is or if it even matters. Also wondering how long you all were on methotrexate. I read about all of these symptoms posted here and it breaks my heart for her. I wish you all the very best.

Hi guys,
as my doctor thinks that my vitamin b12 levels are ok (298 pmol, 402 pg/ml), he won't give me any prescription. And in my country folic acid of 5 mg is available only under prescription, the only available option is the 400mcg folic-acid. I plan to supplement 1000mcg methyl-b12, and now I am in state where I don't know what should I do?
Thanks in advance :)
Just diagnosed with Thalassemia Minor, the doctor has asked me to take Folic acid but didn't say for how long. I am not gonna see him again. Is it a supplement which I have to take all my life or what?
Please help ππΌ
Recently i m taking b complex from a brand 'jamieson' it contains 50 mcg of b1 b2 b3 b5 b6 b12....and 400mcg folic acid. The dosage works very good on me. I cant tolerate high b12 in most b complex specially for mthfr mutation, (like life extension, thorne) so i wonder is it safe to consume 400mcg folic acid?? (i heard folic acid will be unmetabolized and stay in blood for mthfr mutation and causing some sort of toxicity to liver)
Iβve seen posts on this subreddit and on the B12 Wake Up Facebook group saying that high doses of folic acid (5mg a day) is required when receiving regular B12 injections (e.g. every other day). However I have not found any other sources for this recommendation online. Does anyone know of any other sources, other than the B12 Wake Up group?
TSH: 4.890mU/l (0.27-4.2)
fT3: 3.8 pg/ml (2.0-4.4)
fT4: 16.3 pg/ml (9.3-17.0)
TPO: 36 U/ml (<37)
Cortisol: 5.0 microgr/dl (4.8-19.5) β> pretty low, but I already had a negative acth-stimulation test a couple of months ago, so apparently I donβt have problems with my adrenal glands.
The number of my antibodies has decreased by around 75% ( I attribute this mainly to taking selenium and myo-inositol; at least thatβs my explanation) during the past 12 months. Sonographic images show that my thyroid doesnβt exhibit the typical appearance of inflammation anymore which was present one year ago, so this corresponds to my decreased TPOs. Apparently, some progress has been made, I guess.
I still have typical symptoms of hypothyroidism though (fatigue, depression, brain fog, dry skin, joint pain, dry mucosa etc). I feel really bad, to be honest.
Vit D: 16.0 ng/ml (<12=deficit; 12-20=insufficient; 20-50 adequate; >100 potentially toxic)
B12: 406 pg/ml (197-1200)
Folic acid: 5.4 ng/ml (3.9-26.8)
Iron: 69 microgr/dl (33-193)
My Vit D is insufficient but I take supplements now, B12 is also at the low end of the range; same as folic acid and iron. But nothing alarmingly low, that would make a doctor suspicious.
Does anyone have an idea what might be going on with me? Does my thyroid blood work explain my hypo symptoms? Do people with Hashimoto still feel really bad with my thyroid blood levels? Would you consider my other deficits as the cause? Is it a combination of everything? I donβt take Thyroxine, btw.
Thanks for your help!

Hi all,
31M here, recently diagnosed with colitis.
For 3 months on 2 gram of Salofalk (mesalamine) per day. However, from day 1, my GI also prescribed me 10 gram of Folic Acid with explanation that Mesalamine reduce Folate from body.
I knew that old type of medicine like Sulfasalazine reduce the folat, but was not sure about Mesalamine. However, I took it as my doctor said.
I achieved remission quickly, very low calprotectin, no blood, normal stool, but still sometimes I have diarhea with cramps in stomatch, a lot of gas, etc. I thought it is all from IBS.
One weekend I left the city and forgot folic acid, and suddenly no stomatch pain, no cramps, no diarhea. I came back home, took folic acid, and boom, symptoms came back.
Then I did a research and find out that overdosage of folate is causing nervous stomatch system.
I stopped using folic acid again, and symptoms dissapeared.
My question is:
Do you guys take Folic Acid with Mesalamine? Is it really needed or my doctor made a mistake?
thanks
All my vitamins level are corrected now. But still have buzzing sensation in my left leg and dizziness. Anyone who had experienced same issue. Will it ever go away ??? I have not seen any improved in the above symptom.
B12 - from 159 to 500 Vitamin D - 13 to 54 Folic acid -4 to 22
My brain MRI reports are normal.
I'm trying to figure out how this works. Since most foods have supplemental folic acid in them and it's difficult to avoid them all.
I thought I understood it as folic acid has to be changed by your body into folate then into the methyl form which takes extra work and if running at a lower rate of absorption it would make you absorb even less.
But I just recently read somewhere about how folic acid can attach to the receptors and blocking the spots for methylfolate so that you can't absorb it as well. This came from probably an unreliable kind of "wakadoo" source, so I don't know how much I can believe it.
I just wanted to double check and see exactly what the difference is between how each is processed in the body and whether getting too much of one or the other would affect absorption of each other.
So I guess my question is if I'm trying to take supplements with the methyl form of folate but also not avoiding folic acid in my diet would my diet of consuming folic acid hinder the ability of my body to absorb the methyl formulate from my multivitamin? Am I just wasting money? I'm compound heterozygous.
B12, folic acid deficiency are also possible triggers.
Vitamin B12 and folic acid serum levels in obsessive compulsive disorder
I am giving away 3 boxes of unopened PregVIt folic 5 (with 5mg of folic acid). I got this prescribed by my GP when I was having bad pregnancy sickness, but I do not need such a high dose of folic acid. Earliest expiration date is 2022-09-30
Pick up at Toronto Downtown near AGO.
I am trying to do research on folate vs methylfolate, but so many websites interchange folate with folic acid so itβs hard to come up with a consensus on if natural folate, like in spinach, is the same as methylfolate or if it is affected by mthfr at all. Im looking into this because I want to find natural sources through food (like juicing spinach and dark greens) since many seem to have issues with methylfolate supplements.
1.) is natural folate the same as methyl folate?
2.) if not, is itβs processing into methylfolate affected by mthfr?
3.) if one were to switch to non processed foods, would they alleviate issues with things like folic acid in processed food?
I tried searching to see if this was posted, but I wasn't able to find what I'm looking for. I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate post.
I'm about 5 weeks in to my pregnancy and saw my gyno last week. He mentioned that I should be taking either folic acid or prenatal vitamins. I've been taking the Jamieson prenatals containing 1000mcg of folic acid. I was reading online that taking that much can be harmful. Would it be suggested that I switch to a folic acid pill or stick with the prenatals? I've been taking the prenatals since September, if that helps.
I'm also in Canada, so some brands may differ from here and other places. Obviously a solid 10/10 nervous and just want to make sure I'm doing it right!
Thanks in advance π
Title. I'm pretty much almost done covering the few holes in my diet, b3 is one of the last ones (alongside Omega3 and 6).

Hello!
We are fourth-year students from the University of the Philippines College of Nursing, and we are looking for at least 132 more participants for our online survey. Our undergraduate research looks into the factors related to the adherence to folic acid supplementation. Folic acid is especially helpful for those in the reproductive age (e.g., extremely beneficial for the health of a growing baby in the womb as well as for the mother's well-being). Our findings will contribute to the improvement of womenβs well-being, and maternal and child health in the Philippines.
Individuals may voluntarily participate in the online survey if they are:

Our undergraduate research looks into the factors related to the adherence to folic acid supplementation. Folic acid is especially helpful, for instance, in the improvement of symptoms and infertility in patients with PCOS. Moreover, it is extremely beneficial for the health of a growing baby in the womb. Our findings can hopefully contribute to the betterment of women's well-being, and maternal and child health in the Philippines.
