A list of puns related to "Fight Choreography"
Hi I'm an aspiring fight choreographer for film here in Calgary. One of the martial art styles I really want to practice with someone are the Philippino or Indonesian martial arts. Stick fighting, silat, eskrima,Kali or whatever other martial art styles are in that general family of styles.
I know covid is a real barrier right now but I'd really like to start networking now. I'm very open to zoom training for now and know enough to get started.
I may be building a fight choreography team soon for film fights and I'm looking for the right people who want to constantly train these martial arts.
You don't have to be pro but just have to have a real drive to practice these styles or other martial arts on a regular basis.
Thanks for your time!

Haven't made it to season 8 yet, but from what I've seen so far, season 7 had the best choreography, and season 4 had the worst choreography in the show so far... Wonder if the choreography gets any better in season 8.....
Title.
Not sure where else to post this but since I'm in Calgary.
I'm looking for local people who are interested in collaborating to make some videos of fight scenes.
If you have experience in videography, stunts, acting, martial arts, or think you have any skills relevant to build a group dedicated to fight choreography and film stunts in Calgary or know someone who might be interested then contact me here.
None of this is paid work and none of it is makeing any money at this time. This is to see if there are any people who would like to grow there skills in any of these fields. To document the process in a YouTube channel.
All the videos will belong to everyone involved.
The goal is to quickly become a group who can become well known for creating quality content of this kind. I'm not sure where this would take us after that but the first step is to get good at it.

Here is an example of what this process might look like. https://youtu.be/oZhks0_2mHM
Again you DONT HAVE TO BE A PRO at any of these skills but you do HAVE TO BE PASSIONATE, the rest we will work it all out togeather. Anyone who is interested in any of this shout out to me.

To further clarify
Ballistics - Most accurate portrayal of proper gun usage, reloading, number of bullets ber clip, etc. John Wick for example probably takes the crown for this category (aside from that scene with the silencers).
Fight choreography - Most brutally violent and realistic, not the kind of martial arts that might look cool but would be impractical in an actual street fight.
Injuries - Most accurate to the portrayal of broken bones, stabbings, gun wounds etc. in terms of how it would affect your ability to run or fight. And also the recovery time.
Mental trauma - Acknowledgment of PTSD is basically what I mean. There are a lot of films where the main character is a totally normal person and gets wrapped up in crazy shit where they witness several people die then walk away with seemingly no psychological trauma from it.
Physical exhaustion - Characters don't have infinite stamina and get exhausted. Constantly running or fighting would be really tiring even if you're in peak physical condition. The Daredevil season 1 hallway fight stood out for me for this reason. Matt Murdock was an expert martial artist and fighting half a dozen guys exhausted him so much that he had to stop in the middle of the fight to rest and catch his breath.
βAction SitRep Podcast - Olivia Liang is mentioned at 1:13:14-1:14:35 or 72:58-74:20
(also not to be confused with a different actress, Olivia Cheng from Warrior who's also mentioned in the same podcast)
Brett Chan (fight choreographer for Marco Polo, Warrior) was the stunt coordinator for first 6 episodes for Kung Fu and I think Rhys Williams is the stunt coordinator for the rest of the episodes according to imdb. Brett had a lot of praise for Olivia for being committed to training every day and picking up the choreography quickly. However, CW was very shortsighted thinking they could make Olivia to be like the fighters from Warrior...
>And it's like this Kung Fu. They (CW) called me, "What can you do to make her look like she's been training like the guys from Warrior?"
>
>I said, "Well I need someone with (a little?) martial arts experience and about maybe 2 months training with them."
>
>"Okay, great. Here's this girl who has no martial arts and you have 5 days."
(I assume this happens often in show business. Rushing everything or expect a lot from stunt teams with little support from producers)
I'm not sure from the interview.. but it sounds like she had only 2 weeks to train before Brett had to leave? I guess she would have more training afterward and work with Rhys who did stunt work on other CW shows. Her stunt double is Megan Hui.
I also noticed the stunt coordinators are not part of the second unit director credits (they usually handle filming/directing for the stunts). This explains a lot why some angles and editing seems off (also with the slow motion). I feel like Nikita (older CW show)'s editing was better even though there were still several cuts.
If you're not too picky about the choreography, the fights will look average. But the way CW handles action scenes for this show may not be to everyone's liking or won't seem realistic to those who are really into martial arts/fighting details. Kung Fu is geared towards a younger demographic and is more family friendly so this type of action might fit better for that audience.
Star Wars is a multi-billion dollar fantasy film franchise. Among its biggest icons is the plasma staff, called in universe a Lightsaber.
Note: the Lightsaber is not a sword, nor a Saber, but the word sword will be used from here. This is a different discussion for a different time.
Considering that many of the series' central tensions are resolved via martial combat - wizard-knights duelling with a combination of magic and swordplay, you'd think they'd be better at it. Hire somebody who knows what they're doing.
They don't do that, and almost without exception, the choreography of any sequence involving lightsabers is poorly executed.
The Jedi and Sith are spoken in universe as though they're powerful wizards, to be feared and admired for their prowess in combat. Talented swordspeople, competent, powerful.
Do you think it's outside of Disney's budget to train their actors in how to effectively use a sword?
Do you think it's beyond the budget to hire some better body doubles, choreographers. Have a HEMA practicioner or two on set. Hire an expert to stop the actors from looking like amateurs?
The Mandolorian is, on average, quite a lot better than the average Star Wars film. It's quite a well made show for the most part.
It's a damn shame that quality didn't carry through to the choreography department.
Season 2, Episode 5: I'm looking at you.
In this episode, we see a duel between a trained Jedi with two one-handed swords, against the antagonist armed with a spear.
The Jedi is presumably the more skilled combatant, but spears tend to be stronger than swords. Sounds like a cool fight.
Sure would be a shame if neither used their weapons in a logical, useful or interesting fashion.
Know what makes the spear the best* martial weapon? Its length. You stand at a distance where your opponent can't hit you, and you poke holes in them. High-low-high. Use the lever of the weapon to keep your opponent on the back foot, endlessly defending, or making dangerous attempts to close the distance and strike.
Have the Jedi demonstrate their superior skill, speed and instincts by overcoming those advantages.
Instead: nah, let's just hold the spear in the middle. Let's swing with the spear like it's a club.
Let's ignore the openings the spear user's poor technique leaves. Don't attack her hands, don't attack her face.
> *Uhm ackshually, the Jedi needed her alive, that's why she didn't kill
... keep reading on reddit β‘Literally exactly what I stated. Whoever determined the choreography for the fights did a perfect job. Whether it's the ship fight, or Hong Kong. These fight scenes were awesome as fuck. Hands down.
βYour scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didnβt stop to think if they should.β
I realize the original trilogy fight choreography was simple based on actor ability and all that, but in my head canon I associated it with the Samurai stories. Two combatants square off, evaluating each otherβs stances and most subtle movements. To the less trained eye we just see two people standing still, but when they finally act it is swift with each strike having the potential to be the last. With Jedi I imagined the same thing but with an unseeable storm of Force evaluation going on. Thatβs why a Force user with a lightsaber is a different level than a regular soldier that picked one up - itβs why Han seemed so awkward even using one as a Taunton opener.
In the prequels and sequels there is excessive flipping and spinning and acrobatics, for my preferred aesthetic. Great for a Kung-Fu movies, but to me straying far from the original trilogy influences. Seeing the lightsaber choreography from the Mandalorian made me feel there was something mystical going, above and beyond my ability to comprehend. What seemed like simple conservative movements had devastating effects. Lightsaber and the Force used in tandem.
Let the arrogant show offs have their flash while the humble and skilled wait for the right moment.
The revelation that is the fact that this new RWBY is no longer the RWBY of old, the one I still feel nostalgic towards. The fights this volume so far are just THAT forgettable.
This isn't a new revelation, I knew this quite a long time ago, probably back since V6, V5 or even before. But to be reminded of that makes me sad.
This show still fascinates me because of its innumerable fuck-ups. And I'll still watch it to dissect it and study its innards (no way in hell am I watching it as a First member though, I ain't giving these people that kind of money). But I won't lie in saying that it doesn't make me sad thinking about the show long ago that mesmerized me, a young rough around the edge passion project by a small team, constructed under limited resources. It does make me sad.
I did not even once think about how the fights and animation looked when I watched and took notes on this volume. It was just too mediocre and too shitty, too busy with crap writing and a bloated cast to remember the thing that got the show popular in the first place. And I'm not the kind of person who only cares about writing in a show. When I analyze/critique a show, I look at everything, the presentation, the production, the writing, the execution. In cases of animated shows it is of course the animation.
But to think that I have nothing to say about the animation other than forgettable and mediocre/crap just kills me a bit inside.
This show is not the same show it was anymore. But I think that's intentional on the part of the current showrunners, how they like to cut themselves off from that legacy and yet insist on using the nostalgia of the old name to market themselves with this "still following the plan" crap they keep spouting out (even a blind man can see that they are not following "the plan" assuming there even is a plan, which likely there isn't).
Happy New Years everyone. I hope a miracle happens this year.
EDIT: some typo
I was a little bored so I translated a snippet of chinese meta.
C-netizens have noticed that the fight choreography on the roof when wwx and lwj first meet is the same as that when they fight again after he returns from the burial mounds. however, wwx loses this time when they fight whereas previously he could hold his ground without unsheathing suibian. lwj knows that there's something very wrong with his golden core and never leaves his side after that. i've translated the video in tumblr so you can refer to that!
I just watched John Wick (1) for the first time, and while I found the stunts and choreography okay, they seemed underwhelming compared to the "The Raid" movies. While Keanu Reeves delivers good stunts, the actors in the Raid seem to be natural and long time fighters in real life and you can feel it. The action just seems visceral and almost painful to watch. What other movies can you recommend have a similar level of choreography?
Like I feel the shots and fight scenes are so well done I I want to get specific details about the work, people responsible, managing budget

I throw my shield at you so it's flying at you, but then I shoot my own shield with my laser so my shield and my ricocheting laser are both flying at you.
Hey everyone, hope you all are doing good. I am a theatre actor and I also train in BJJ and JKD/Kali. I have been practising martial arts for about 2 years now.
I have always been a fan of stage/screen combat scenes and have always wondered how people choreograph them and execute them so beautifully. I always have a hard time choreographing my own scenes (maybe because I am still a student and a beginner). So I needed some help with that, how do you people choreograph fights? What things do you keep in mind while choreographing the fight scenes and how to avoid injuries and that sort of stuff?
It would be a great help if anyone can help me out with this.
