Any recommended Smallsword fencing treatises or Manuels? I'm basically a neophyte with only 2 years experience in sports fencing. Possibly related to Le Ponte or Destreza, not required, thanks!

Also would rapier or longsword treatises work like I know they are completely different its like comparing earth to Jupiter but is there any benefit to learn other weapon techniques if I only plan to focus on one?

Trying to get through lv 51 of the mines and getting KO by ghosts and flying skulls every time - my brother asked what weapon I have and apparently I’ve missed a bunch because I’m trying to wade my way through with the Steel Smallsword (4-8 damage)

Help, where do I find the other weapons? I had no idea I was missing out!

Is it true that early boxing stances and footwork were based on European dueling/smallswords/weapons stances and footwork?

If so, pretty fascinating that unarmed martial arts were derived from weapon martial arts. You'd think it would be the other way around.

Edit: By early I meant the 1700s-1800s era.

Are rapiers and smallsword the same thing?

I often hear people say that sideswords and rapier are the same thing, does the same apply to smallsword, is it just a rapier?

I have seen at at least one early 18th century source that refers to thier smallsword system as rapier.

How comparable, in general, are styles used for rapier and smallsword fencing?

Sorry if this is an odd question.

Essentially, how similar in movement were they? Could a talented smallsword fencer transition with ease to rapier, and vice versa?

Proper smallsword length

Online, I'm seeing some contradictory information about how long a smallsword should be relative to one's height.

On the one hand, the thought that 27-33 inch blades represent a "normal" range based on historical examples, with some outliers. On the other hand, the thought that blade length should increase proportional to height to a greater degree, such that someone 6 feet tall should have, say, a 36 inch blade or more.

Any thoughts from the practitioners here?

Are there any historical sources(rapier, smallsword or thrusting weapons in general) of something similar to Sports Fencing's Foot Shots?

I know why a foot shot would generally not be something you'd learn historically speaking, because it sounds like a bad idea all around. You'd have to read your opponent very carefully, and one wrong move and you're dead, with the upside being at most having landed a small thrusting attack to their foot. Bad in a fight to the death, and riskier than a thousand other moves in a duel to first blood.

I don't buy the "you'd always get hit with the afterblow" after a toe touch because, honestly, a properly done foot shot can be done in a way that your opponent won't attack you back either because they are afraid of a counter, pure mindgames, or just because you caught their front foot as they were retreating and the distance wasn't there. I've done this in rapier practice a few times and it's really fun, but only when screwing around because I honestly can't justify it in a proper gameplan and I don't think it would be allowed in most tournaments(and even if it were, I don't think it would be one of my top shots).

That said, I do buy that foot shots are--despite sometimes being safe--absurdly risky and honestly just not worth considering, especially in a historical scenario.

That said I've stumbled upon a lot of things in sports fencing that I was shocked to see had some historical precedence, even if it didn't catch on with the 'mainstream' back then (bouncing, for one, arguably fleches, and people complaining about flicks even before electric scoring just had me laughing a lot) so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some historical mention about this.

Can a person be too tall to do smallsword?

I have a friend who is curious about both HEMA and fencing. I asked them if they were interested in studying smallsword and they said that they think they are too tall. Maybe this is in comparison to myself (I'm almost a foot shorter than them) but I do wonder if they have a point or if they just weren't willing to admit they aren't interested.
