Hiya, in this megathread I'll be recapping the announcements made during Connect. I'll be updating the thread as we go along, trying to capture the most important parts.

Feel free to comment if I've missed anything.

Opening keynote - 10 AM PT

Zuckerberg talks about making mistakes and focusing on the future, even in the light of criticism. And says he is committed to giving it his all.

Short montage of the history of VR, montage of modern tech, some AR and VR effects.

Zuckerberg starts talking about the metaverse and the creative economy.

He says the "metaverse" is the next step; where we've gone from desktop, to web, to mobile.

Zuckerberg feels like the metaverse is the successor to the mobile internet.

Zuckerberg talks about how the metaverse can make all sorts of interaction over distance more natural, with better presence.

Connecting in the metaverse

Zuckerberg starts out in what looks like a new Oculus home and he gets invited to a spaceship where him and his friends play cards. One of them is a hologram, 3 of them are virtual human avatars and one is a robotic avatar. They pull up a videocall in the middle of the table, and the friends in the videocall show off some AR art.

"It's a ways off, but you can start to see the building blocks being made"

Zuckerberg mentions expressiveness, like being able to see what your friends' hands are like from their expression.

Zuckerberg mentions avatars replacing profile pictures, and having separate ones for work, hanging out, and gaming.

He mentions collaborative offices and homes that others can be invited to.

Zuckerberg mentions not being locked to a platform. He says it'll take more than "crypto, NFTs" - but governance too.

"Privacy and security needs to be built in from day one"

Zuckerberg mentions being able to take physical items into the virtual world, if they can be represented digitally. Like photos.

He says inputs will be different, gestures, movements, or even "just thinking about them" (implying BCI).

He says it might seem like science fiction, in "5-10 years, this will be mainstream"

Horizon Home is coming soon, where you'll be able to invite and join friends - so basically just home, but multiplayer on Quest.

messenger calls are coming to VR.

Horizon Home, Horizon Worlds and Horizon Workrooms are their three virtual spaces for now.

In the default Shopify <> Facebook integration they say I can only connect ad account I "own".

I need to link an ad account that belongs to an agency and is just shared with my Business Manager.

Can anyone suggest anything to connect the agency ad account that I don't own to Shopify?

BlackBerry has earnings coming up this Wednesday, September 22nd after the market close, and there has been speculation from RBC Equity Research that the patent settlement/details could be announced.

On top of this, IAM media outlook who is a legit and fairly accurate media outlet specializing in Intellectual Property (and who first broke news about the BlackBerry Patent sales earlier in 2021) said in August 2021 the announcement is likely close and could be announced towards the end of September 2021, which is now (see below for the article):

"Nine months after IAM first broke the story of a potential sale of BlackBerry’s patent portfolio, the deal to get it done may now be entering the endgame

It’s almost exactly five months since BlackBerry confirmed in a press release about its Q4 and full year 2021 financials that the company was looking to sell a large section of its patent portfolio:

During the quarter BlackBerry entered into an exclusive negotiation with a North American entity for the potential sale of part of the patent portfolio relating primarily to mobile devices, messaging and wireless networking. The Company has limited its patent monetization activities due to the ongoing negotiations. If the Company had not been in negotiations during the quarter, we believe that Licensing revenue would have been higher.

This came four months after IAM had broken the news that such a sale was being considered by the Canadian telecoms business.

Since that March announcement, though, and the contents of a 10K release, there has been very little public or, indeed, private comment on the state of play in how the transaction negotiations are panning out.

So, while it was known that the possible deal was with a North American entity and involved that part of BlackBerry’s 38,000-strong portfolio of patents “relating primarily to non-core or legacy mobile devices, messaging and wireless networking technologies”, there was no mention of a price, the stage the negotiations had reached or the identity of the possible buyer.

I am trying to merge my oculus and Facebook accounts, but I can't merge it because I don't know my oculus password which was created when I linked my Facebook account to my Quest 2. Is the password to my oculus somewhere on my headset? I only have free games so I don't think I'll lose anything.

Although I remember reading about it before I bought this, that Facebook has the power to "cancel" your headset and the guy was really mad.

Facebook Patent Settlement/Partnership Catalyst

Blackberry filed a lawsuit against Facebook for Patent Infringement (and won). Technology in WhatsApp Messenger apparently is Blackberry's tech and Facebook wasn't paying any licensing fees to Blackberry. Both parties settled out of court, Blackberry got a positive judgement against Facebook and a judge in Germany ordered a halt on WhatsApp use of BB technology which could have affected nearly 80 million users.

Only the patent settlement Facebook and Blackberry reached out of court recently turned into a patent sale. With a large upfront payment and 7 years of IP licensing tail.

John Chen CEO said in March that BB entered into patent sale negotiation with North America based tech company and can't disclose more.

I strongly believe that BB and FB are negotiating not just patent sale but also a partnership agreement. Blackberry will secure WhatsApp Messenger for Enterprise. (This might be huge as Salesforce bought Slack). Blackberry also gets free advertising on FB Instagram.

Patent payout upfront 600 million plus 1.4 billion over seven years in IP licensing.

Facebook wants to get in on the action and partner with Blackberry. After all it's Blackberry who invented the smart phone and the instant messenger. Judges, lawyers and political figures were using Secure Messenger BBM well before anyone else. They were first to market in smart phones and BBM

Mark Zuckerberg was living in the college dorm even Blackberry enterprise customers were already using BBM and it's only fair that Blackberry finally gets fair compensation for their innovative technology.

John Chen when asked about the patent sale he said stay tuned. He meant there is very good news coming soon. Don't sell your shares.

Just wanted to play a bit and my Account tried to connect to Facebook. Now I lost all my cars and have a new Account. Anyone knows what I can do?

I have an old Facebook account which I used to connect some games with. The Facebook account was connected to a Gmail which I no longer have nor know the password. And I want to login to my 8ball pool account which is connected to Facebook but recently It logged me out of the Facebook app version. Luckily I still have that account logged in with the Google Chrome version.

Question: can I login to 8bp directly with my account which is logged in with on my Chrome browser. (I don't know the password though)

Or could I just transfer my account to the real Facebook app without logging in ? Like just login without logging in you know?

This might be a confusing situation just ask me I'll answer any questions about my problem. Any help appreciated thanks

I spoke too soon... WF G4.0.4 continues to try and connect to > connect.facebook.net < immediately on startup. I had another block in place that I failed to remove when testing the new version. Any help appreciated.

with all the rumors of new headset and announcements from not only htc, that big fancy head company on the 21st of October. do you think oculus will announce a new headset even if it prototype. and do you think it will be released on the market. how would upgrade this new headset if oculus did announce it on the 28th of October.

Anyone else have trouble connecting to facebook on Samsung?

My Discover Weekly is usually a mix of metal, rock, some rare electronic music, ambient. So a music profile can be very complex.

And now when there're podcasts, the profiles could also include interests. Could be a separate opt-in feature, though.

Spotify is growing fast, a lot of people use it, their algorithm is really good. So it can be a great tool to easily find people with similar tastes and thus, probably, similar character.

Or maybe, they're already doing it, creating psychological profiles for people and selling them to facebook or something. Or am I getting paranoid? Lol I don't use facebook, so personally I don't worry about it.

Funny thing, I posted this idea on their sub first, and the post was removed by the mods soon after. So now I'm really getting convinced that they're already doing it when you connect your account to facebook. They sell them the psychological profiles, and just don't want people to realize it. Or it's just the weed, you never know lol.

I’ve played the game before on my Android phone and have saved my progress using Facebook but on my new iPhone, it won’t let me connect. It lets me log in to Facebook and accept permissions but it just loops over and over again. Is there some way to do it?

After the season update, the Redecor app reset my progress. When I try to connect to Facebook to retrieve my account, it just says that Facebook is unable to show the requested page.

Hello everyone, I am coming on here to see if anyone can help me. I have contacted both Facebook and Voltage in hopes of getting help. My phone ended up needing to be replaced and I went to reinstall my Love 365 APP. I backed up all my data through facebook, thinking I would have no problem retrieving it as I had done that in the past. Well, the app and facebook do not connect anymore. I get this:

"App Not Setup:The app os still in development mode and you dont have access to it. Switch to a registered test uder or ask an app admin for permission"

I'm at a loss of what to do and have gotten no response from either Voltage or Facebook. Anyone know anything I can do? I've spent a lot of money on the stories within this app ( before and after Love 365). I even have my app ID and my sub ID.
