Elden Ring’s world and lore are heavily based on alchemy symbolism (specifically the Magnum Opus)

https://preview.redd.it/nggrnif2f7381.png?width=1301&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf9f68388360df24a6315b1dbe7f0f7352ef8a30

To briefly explain what will be an extremely lengthy post, alchemy appears to be a major theme in Elden Ring. Many other games and fantasy works borrow from the rich concepts and symbolism of alchemy and the magnum opus (the Great Work), but the influences in Elden Ring are so pervasive that the inhabitants of the world literally have alchemy references coming out of their asses (i.e., the Gold-Tinged Excrement item). There is a lot to examine, so I’ll cover the major points up front.

  1. The Elden Ring logo can be compared to alchemy-related diagrams of creation/universal connection such as the tree of life, seen in numerous mythologies, and the Ripley Scroll, which illustrate the achievement of the fabled philosophers’ stone.
  2. The player’s journey from lowly Tarnished to golden lord corresponds to alchemy’s magnum opus, where lead is literally or metaphorically turned to gold.
  3. The “bloody wolf” identity of the Tarnished mirrors that of alchemy’s “grey wolf” (antimony), a “cooperative metal” capable of purifying gold.
  4. Elden Ring’s Godrick and his kingdom Limgrave are symbolically linked to the first stage of the magnum opus, nigredo (darkness, decapitation, lion and serpent images).
  5. Item descriptions point to lore that correlates with other important processes in alchemy, such as dissolution, separation, and the “chemical wedding.”
  6. The leaked early concept map >!can be seen as a crucible containing the four classical elements and bearing signs of the seven alchemical operations to complete the magnum opus, as shown in Basil Valentine’s Azoth diagram.!<
  7. Elden Ring’s fingers-and-hands motif can be connected to an alchemical diagram called The Hand of the Philosopher, which itself can be connected to ancient art objects like the Hand of Sabazius and the Egyptian two-finger amulet.

If you are of the opinion that looking too hard for clues ahead of time can spoil your enjoyment later, viewing any of the posted content is not recommended. If you are interested in deep analysis that doesn’t know when to stop, read on. This post will bring in outside resources to compare with publicly available information. No leaks will be discussed or shown, with the exception of the widely circulated early concept art of the full map (which is too interesting to pass up).

Update: I have taken a closer look at Elden Rin

Jennifer is NOT an Eldritch Horror

Thleekla was a xenologist of some repute.

He'd spent centuries cataloguing and experimenting on strange and wonderful species. He'd studied the Void Angels of the Tarantula nebula, who breathed its diffuse gasses, and grew for millennia beyond counting to reach the size of small planets. He'd studied the Mrin'lok people, smallest of all sapients, who burrowed beneath the surface of their dwarf planet to build amazing crystal cities in the ice. He'd made such a name for himself that he was given his own, one-man research vessel, and a great deal of discretion in choosing what to research, and where to do it.

He'd chosen an out of the way system near the inner rim of the Orion-Cygnus arm. A main sequence star, yellow, hydrogen burning. A few millennia earlier, a standard automated exploration probe had catalogued the system. The third planet out had an abundance of life and liquid water. No attempt had been made to catalogue the life, but no obvious signs of advanced technology were present. That didn't bother Thleekla, he didn't need something advanced, he just wanted something new.

Thleekla's mind dropped into the deep familiar focus that would create a gateway, and his ship slipped through it.

It seemed the residents of the third planet had been making some progress since the probe's visit. There were satellites, even some small manned structures in orbit. Nothing to be concerned about, but that species would probably be the best candidate for his experiments. He scanned the planet, selecting a subject that would not be missed, in an area with low population density.

Thleekla's mind again reached out to form a gateway, this time just a small one. The subject fell unceremoniously into a heap in the test chamber.

It was an ape. Bipedal, mostly hairless. It did have long black hair on the top of its head though. Two forward facing eyes, one nose, one mouth, two mammary glands, slender build. All of its features were oriented directly forward, more or less. Likely a predator. Nothing particularly unusual about it, except for the lack of hair. That was a bit of an anomaly for a mammal. Something to pursue later.

The subject stood and began making some noises. Possibly an auditory communication method, suggesting low or no psionic capability. It moved around the room, investigating the smooth walls.

Thleekla gave a mental shrug, beginning the scan. The subject seemed to have some sort of reaction to the scanner beam, screaming and holding its head. Th

[Comic Books] The story of Power Girl: How DC Comics' most infamously sexualized female character also broke their continuity and got one of the most confusing backstories in comic book history

Who is Power Girl?

Power Girl is in that strange category of superheroes who aren't quite iconic enough to be household names, but can still spark arguments among hardcore fans. Yet most of her notoriety stems from exactly one thing. And if you're a fan, you probably already know what I mean.

First making her debut in All-Star Comics #58 in February 1976, Power Girl (also known as Karen Starr and Kara Zor-L) first came to prominence as a member of the superhero team "The Justice Society of America". She can fly, she's superhumanly strong, and she has x-ray vision and heat vision—which you might recognize as Superman's powers. That's because she's also Superman's cousin, and a fellow survivor of the planet Krypton's destruction.

Now, even if you're only casually aware of the Superman comics, you might know that Superman has a younger female cousin who also fights crime. But doesn't she call herself "Supergirl"?

Well, yes. And that's where it gets complicated.

See: Power Girl is actually an alternate version of Supergirl from the alternate world of "Earth 2"—which is technically a whole universe, and was created before there was an "Earth 1". And, strangely enough, that's probably the least confusing thing about this whole mess.

How Did We Get Here?

So why is there an alternate version of Supergirl?

Answering that question actually requires diving head-first into the bizarre history of American superhero comics and their odd relationship with American history.

See: the American comic book industry really took off at the height of the Great Depression, when cheap entertainment was in high demand. Comic books were an appealing source of affordable entertainment for American kids struggling through the Depression, and superhero stories were a great escapist fantasy for people who needed a spark of hope in a time of hardship and uncertainty. This led to a famously fertile period in the history of American comic books known as "The Golden Age of Comics", which lasted roughly from 1938 to 1945. And National Allied Publications (eventually renamed "DC Comics") emerged as one of the biggest comic book publishers in the world during that period.

For various reasons, superhero comics briefly dipped in popularity after World War II, forcing DC Comics to cancel several of their monthly comic books and retire their lead characters. A-Listers like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman survived, but mid-tier characters li

Question: How is Math Racist?

All the bullshit aside, all the attention whore hucksters shilling to make a buck from dumb liberal students/audiences, How is Math Racist?

You will never change the fact that 2+2=4. This is not subjective, it simply is.

Neil Armstrong walked on the moon because people who knew that 2+2=4 were able to leverage their incredible knowledge of physics and engineering to put him there. All those disciplines are based on math. A wrong answer or a miscalculation would've put Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin adrift forever.

I don't want the airliner I am on to be designed by someone who does not internalize the fact that math is something where, in this case, you are either 1. Right or 2. Dead.

Math does not care what color you are. Math does not care what sex you are. Math exists.

Where's the racism? Algebra was an Islamic innovation. We use Arabic numerals. Euclid, an Egyptian, invented Geometry. Babylonians were using math 5000 years BCE...

Or is this just shilling by people who cannot make a living otherwise, or who love that sweet sweet attention?

The top 21 players with 20 controversy- What they did to get so controversial? (Thank you Pro_Geymer for the list)

This will be a long one, but I thought this would be an interesting post. Feel free to add any details that I've missed on these controversial chaps. It was very difficult to get info on some of these players and to verify certain pieces so help is welcomed. Just a warning, some dark topics are in this list.

  1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Numerous incidents of violent confrontations with teammates (most notably van der Vaart and Onyewu) and opponents, heated clashes with managers and journalists, controversial comments devaluing the Swedish women's national team, refereeing in Ligue 1 and the standard of the MLS. He has also accused the Swedish media of racism and sued a doctor over doping claims. He was also accused of racism after a clash with Lukaku (He was cleared), fined 50,000 Euros for a stake in a betting company and purchased a stake in Hammarby IF despite starting his career at fierce rivals, Malmo FF.

  2. Teo Gutierrez- Left Trabzonspor without permission having lied about health problems. Was sacked by Racing Club for threatening teammates with a paintball gun. Sacked by Lanus for refusing to return to Argentina. Forced a move from Cruz Azul to River Plate in controversial circumstances.

  3. Didier Lamkel Ze-- Was pictured wearing an Aderlecht shirt was playing for arch-rivals, Antwerp

  4. Felipe Melo- Was sued by a journalist after Melo called him a coward and a cuckhold. Got into a fight with some Fenerbachce fans in Las Vegas. Endorsed Bolsonaro (I know many Brazilian players did, just wondering if that was part of the reason SI gave him 20 controversy) .

  5. Mario Balotelli- Fired air guns in Milan, Wore an AC Milan t-shire playing for Inter, numerous discipline issues on the pitch falling out with most managers, throwing darts at youth team players, firing fireworks in his bathroom, being photographed with mobsters, crashing his car while carrying £5k, driving into a female prison, broke curfew to go to a curry house where he had a mock fight with rolling pins, took Man City to a tribunal for fining him 2 weeks wages before dropping the case, was accused of anti-Semitism.

  6. Petar Bockaj- Caused life long injuries while drunk driving

  7. Danilo Avelar- Was pictured with an AK47 in a Russian military base while playing for Shakhtar Donetek.

  8. Jean Deza- Sacked by Montpelier for indiscipline, sued by Levski Sofia for refusing to attend a training camp. Signed for two teams at once in the same league. Numerous cases of domes

In this post, we’ll be talking about the absolutely insane story of James J. Strang. He faked his own death, claimed to have been appointed Joseph’s successor by a letter he produced, claimed ordination to the role by an angel, formed a breakaway sect of the Church referred to as the Strangites which many of the Book of Mormon witnesses as well as members of Joseph Smith’s family temporarily joined after his death, claimed to find and translate a set of plates of his own supposedly taken from the Book of Laban, became a State Representative, claimed there was a sea monster in Lake Michigan, crowned himself the earthly king of the Kingdom of God while residing on Beaver Island, Michigan, fired a canon at his detractors, cozied up to John C. Bennett, and led an infamous band of Mormon pirates before he was murdered by a group of his own former followers.

Because this story is so bonkers, there are numerous biographies of Strang out there to choose from (“God Has Made Us a Kingdom” by Vickie C. Speek; The King Strang Story by Doyle C. Fitzpatrick; Kingdom Forgotten by Laurie A. Lounsbury; The King of Beaver Island by Charles K. Backus; The King of Beaver Island and The Assassination of a Michigan King, both by Roger Van Noord), but I’ve only read one, The King of Confidence by Miles Harvey. It was informative and well-sourced, but it also was much more fair in its treatment of Strang than it was of either Joseph Smith or Brigham Young, who were both described in pretty unflattering terms. So, take that into consideration if you’re looking for a book recommendation.

I’m going to give an overview of Strang and his story, and then I’ll go into Jerem

My GIANT retrospective on Young Living and MLMs

Young Living is an essential oils brand that is sold via multi-level marketing, which is the barely legal cousin of pyramid schemes. MLMs and cults have a lot of features in common, such as magnetic and strange founders. Young Living is no exception, founded by the veritable quack Donald Gary Young, who despite multiple criminal charges and lawsuits was able to continue operating Young Living until his death. Young Living continues to operate even today.

Donald Gary Young

To truly understand the insidiousness of the Young Living multi-level marketing scheme selling essential oils and other “wellness” products, first we have to dig into the history of its founder, Donald Gary Young. He was born in 1949 into a Mormon household in Idaho. After graduating, in 1967, he briefly worked for the US Forest Service and then moved to Canada with the intention of homesteading in British Columbia. This is when Young had his moment that supposedly converted him to alternative healing and inspired him to found a variety of unsanctioned wellness centers, and eventually Young Living. By Young's account, at the age of 24, he suffered a near-fatal logging accident. He claims to have gotten meningitis, 16 crushed vertebrae, 11 ruptured disks, 19 broken bones, and a herniated spinal cord. There is no documentation of this injury ever having taken place. According to Young's wife, he tried to kill himself three times while recovering from the supposed accident. I have some heavy skepticism about this mainly because Young claimed that he was initially "paralyzed for life" but saved by an essential oil cure. That’s about as believable as prayer healing, but Young’s story about essential oils was a powerful selling and recruiting tool.

Donald Gary Young has a long list of supposed degrees and accolades which have been either debunked or found fraudulent. Throughout his career, Gary Young has asserted that he is a “lifelong student. ”On his personal website, it states that “Between 1982 and 1985, Gary attended Bernadean University and earned a doctorate in naturopathy.” So Gary Young attended university for three years, right? Wrong! Bernadean, is nothing but a mail-order diploma mill that was never approved or accredited to offer any courses or degrees and was eventually exposed as a fraud by the Nevada Supreme Court. Even after the “university” was closed, Gary Young continued to publicize his “degree” on the Young Living website and in his self-funded publications. Gary

[History] The Sand War between Algeria & Morocco, understanding the conflict.

This will be my take on the Sand War, anything written below is based off Western sources. I hope this post will help you understand this conflict, it did for me. Just a little heads up ; if you see a number between parenthesis as such : (1), that means that the information mentioned previously is sourced from the article/ book / newspaper bearing the number "1". They're all mentioned all the way down below, enjoy. Also note that i did note use wiki to write this, all of the information was written by me and the sources i found.

1- Context

2-Moroccan claims

3 - Project Trinquet, French refusal to enlarge Morocco

4 - Algerian weaponry and disadvantage

5 - Analysis and criticism

6 - Criticizing Moroccan claims in the region

7- The question of Soviet/ Cuban/ Egyptian aide, a very much appreciated help but no where near decisive

8 - First phase of the War, Moroccan aggression in 1962

9 - Rising tension between the two countries following the 1962 clash

10 - Short account of the 1963 battles andpositions occupied

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1- Context:

1961 : Farhat Abbas, President of the GPRA (Acronym in French for Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic) agrees with Hassan II, King of Morocco about there being an issue within the Algero-Moroccan borders and to talk about it as soon as Algeria is independent. Algeria had just finished fighting a bloody 8 year war, 132 years of armed struggle and was facing rebellion in the east.

2 - Moroccan claims:

From what i can read the problem was regarding the area around 2 oasises on the border : Hassi Beida and Tinjoub. Regarding Hassi Beida, there is one in Algeria and one in Morocco, Morocco obviously claimed the Algerian Hassi Beida

A map proposed by The Times from the 8th of November 1963

Morocco claimed that those two oiasises as theirs based on the fact that "they were north of the Trinquet line" a line drawn between 1930-1935 OR 1948 by France. And when Algeria took its independence, it considered its borders wherever they were when the Evian agreements were signed. (6) (10) (More on the trinquet line later)

Resources compilation: Some of the things that helped me along my faith transition this past year

Hi everyone. My faith crisis started in November 2020. This last year has been a crazy ride. I'd like to give back somehow and help anyone else who might be having the same thoughts I did at the beginning of my journey down the rabbit hole. I've been meaning to curate something like this for a while now.

This year was the most challenging of my life, but things gets better because you get stronger. I know many of these resources are linked in the main page and have been shared numerous times, but someone might be scrolling here for the first time and come across this post. I hope this helps. Thank you so much.

I apologize in advance for any typos and for the density of this list. Take what you find helpful. These things and many more all contributed to my transition over the past few months. There are SO many more resources out there.

Feel free to add in the comments anything you found helpful along your journey. People on this subreddit are here for you. No, you're not crazy. You can do this. Give yourself lots of time and be patient.

Much love and happy new year. [internet hugs]

King Tut's Mask Is A Representation Of The Scarab-Faced God

There are numerous examples in ancient Egyptian iconography of a scarab beetle set directly below and between two eyes.

There is an obvious interplay of light and shadow right in the middle of the face of King Tut on his mask. It forms the shape of a scarab beetle. You can clearly see the bent front legs directly under both eyes, and the back legs on each side of the mouth.

King Tut has a scarab for a face! Therefore, he is a representation of Khepri, the scarab-faced God.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

Australia’s Smallest Market Cap Companies Part 13: The unlucky numerology of the ASX - do stocks with numbers in their ticker go balls up more than usual?

Astutest of astute investors, and the roughly 70-80 ongoing upvoters and presumed readers of this series, how the bloody hell are you? Recovered from yesterday’s bloodbath yet? Yeah, I don’t want to talk about it either.

As it’s the 13th instalment of this series today, let’s talk about unlucky numbers.

Like all of you, I have some – let’s say - on the spectrum tendencies, and because I’m here, I like playing with numbers and data and seeing what I can find out. And I’ve noticed more than a few instances of astute investors around here saying that tickers with numbers in them are dogs.

But is that really true? And what even is truth?

When I was forced against my will to study the poetry of Keats in Year 12 (real useful, anyone get a job with one of the big poetry corporations lately?), the one thing that stuck with me was this absolute shitter of a line:

“Beauty is Truth, Truth Beauty.' – that is all / Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know”

What the fuck does that even mean? Is everything beautiful true? If I, on a summer’s day, gaze upon the beauty of that cutie in marketing, am I to expect instant enlightenment? Is it the post nut clarity that comes immediately after time spent with a beautiful person of your choice, or the mental images thereof? And where does Paul Keating’s famous quote of “a beautiful set of figures”, probably more relevant to the ASX, come into it?

Is there beauty in numbers? Is 5 more beautiful than 3? Is 8, of the shapely hourglass figure, more beautiful than the slender 1 or the obese 0? What is more beautiful, the smoke haze of the 420 gag or the titillating 69? Is 2 better than 1 when it comes to beautiful members of your preferred gender? (Not necessarily, threesomes can be awkward). Why was 6 afraid? Because 7 8 9!

But, as my year 12 English teacher said, “Rosencrantz1710 needs to focus on the task at hand”. So, today in the unlucky 13th part of this occasional series that attracts about as many upvotes as the meme I posted last Friday but with much more effort, I want to test the hypothesis that a ticker with a number in it is just a dog stock in the making.

Disclaimer: numerology is no basis for investment decisions

Given this is focused on trying to work out whether numbers have an influence on share price, we are now in the realm of numerology intersecting with share trading. Not technical analysis, actual numerology. It’s even worse.

If you actually think numerology is a suitable basis for determi

Basic Descriptions for the Houses in Astrology

Almost two months ago, I made a thread with some basic descriptions for the signs of the zodiac. I got a lot of positive feedback on that post, and since a few people asked me to make another one on the houses, I decided to get that done today. Houses are one of the four pillars of astrology alongside planets, signs, and aspects, but they’re often watered down or disregarded when discussed in popular content. While I would like to jump right into describing each house, I think it’s important to talk about what the houses are before I list what they signify.

Houses are the regions of the local sky — both above and below the horizon — that the planets are located in. While the zodiac shows us where planets are in space relative to the Earth, houses show us what parts of space are visible in the sky at a given time and location. Just as there are twelve signs of the zodiac, there are twelve houses, and all twelve exist in a horoscope.

Houses represent lived experiences, topics, and other people or entities with respect to whatever a chart is studying. In natal astrology, a house can represent you, your mother, your partner, your job, your environment, your beliefs, and more. It can represent experiences of gain and loss, sickness and health, publicity and solitude, and so on. When we interpret a chart, we focus on a house to center a certain experience. Then, we assess the planet ruling that house and the planets in that house to determine the qualities of that experience and when it’ll play out in someone’s life. This is why houses are so important in astrology. Without them, you can’t determine where a planet is being expressed.

One of the most important things to understand about the houses is their rationale. While there are some overlapping significations between different signs and houses, houses do not get their meanings from the signs. This sign-house conflation — commonly known as the ABC model or the twelve letter alphabet — was developed in the early 20th century following the revival of astrology. It changed how we understand the houses in modern times, and it ultimately doesn’t work when you’re delineating a chart using techniques. Houses get their meanings from a number of interacting factors, including diurnal rotation, angularity, aspects to the ascendant, planetary joys, their relationship to othe

Elden Ring's deep connection to alchemy and the Ripley Scroll

https://preview.redd.it/ihq4qfkp4x881.jpg?width=743&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0881d3b9ca018db29e30a33df52fc807821e63e6

In a previous post I put forth a theory that Elden Ring is the Dark Souls of alchemy, adapting and literalizing concepts and symbols from the Hermetic tradition of alchemy, specifically the magnum opus or Great Work, to form the basis of its world and lore.

The release of the story trailer and recent Edge interview motivated me to revisit these connections and elaborate on my initial theories. The previous post can be found pinned in my profile, but I will recap some of the key points and sum up the additional points below:

The Elden Ring logo can be compared to alchemy-related diagrams such as the Ripley Scroll, which illustrates the achievement of the fabled philosophers’ stone.

  • The logo bears a strong resemblance to the Ripley Scroll’s image of a coiled dragon atop a globe (see the previous post for more on this).
  • Similarly, the ring of circles pattern seen in the giant’s eye from the Elden Ring gameplay reveal trailer and armor design motifs resembles the Ripley Scroll’s depiction of the philosophers’ stone as a ring of circles.

The player’s journey from lowly Tarnished to golden Lord corresponds to alchemy’s Great Work, where lead is literally or metaphorically turned to gold.

  • Just as the culmination of alchemy’s Great Work is the creation of the philosophers’ stone; the successful completion of the Long March could lead to the creation of the Elden Ring.
  • I believe Godfrey was the first to make a journey known in Elden Ring’s world as “the Long March.” After uniting with Marika, the Lands Between experienced a time of balance and prosperity governed by the Golden Order.

The “bloody wolf” identity of the Tarnished mirrors that of alchemy’s “grey wolf” (antimony), a “cooperative metal” capable of purifying gold.

  • The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine suggests the base material for the magnum opus be a “fierce grey wolf”. It describes a transformation from wolf to lion and ultimately king.

Various sections of the Ripley Scroll seem to correspond to key lore concepts in Elden Ring.

  • >!In the recent Edge interview, Miyazaki describes the Elden Ring as “metaphysical” in nature, and says that the circles of the logo “represent the laws of the world, the rules and order.” This fits the scroll’s depiction of the philosopher’s stone as a ring uniting seven key princi
