In Jharkand people tend to avoid the roads of eastern ghats at night because of the wailing woman on the cliff.
During my stay in the rural areas of Jharkand as a trainee of medical camps for remote areas, I learned this urban myth the hard way.
We trainees are mostly appointed to run errands like bringing medical supplies or other stuffs. I was about 20 and had this motto of YOLO which caused me this trauma that has lingered in my mind ever since. My supervising officer told me and two of my friends to bring medical supplies from the city of Ranchi. He told us if leave around 9 am we can reach Ranchi by 7 pm or so and therefore we can cross the eastern ghat roads during the daylight. But my friends and I were a bunch of assholes and decided to go slowly by making several pit stops along the way and reach Ranchi by night which will gives us a reason to spend the next day in Ranchi leave for the village around 4 or 5 pm.
So, as we drove and hours flew by, we reached around the eastern ghats around 7:30 or maybe 8. I wanted to pee very badly, so we stopped near a tea stall and I did my work. As I walked upto my friends, the shopkeeper was telling something with a grave look on his face and when I asked what was the matter he said 'Sahib, it would be best if you take the long route from here to Ranchi. If you go for another 3 kms you' ll arrive on the national highway. But I advice you not to take the shortcut. I know it will save a hell lot of time but it will also cost you your life'.
My friend who was driving asked what was wrong with the shortcut as we were planning on taking it. In reply he said 'If you go down that road you will see a woman in a red saree wailing on a cliff. Whenever she sees any vehicle she sprints down the cliff at and abnormal speed and will cling onto your vehicle and not leave until she takes at least one life. It is said that around 1950-60s a wedding procession was hijacked by some bandits and they killed everyone present in it and raped the woman and threw her off the cliff. She was alive and cried for help but vehicles passing by just ignored her and let her die'.
We laughed so hard and made fun of him. He begged us but then gave up as he couldn't make us understand.
Only if we listened to him back then.
So we just ignored his advice and took the shortcut anyway. For a while, maybe an hour or so, we didn't hear shit. We accepted that he was crazy or something but then we heard it. An agonized cry of a woman. It was so,
